To be honest, one shouldn't be able to cast Tibalt when finding Valki with the ultimatum. The texts says (and explicitly implies) only mono coloured, in the same way they just updated the Cascade rule so you can't cast Tibalt when hitting Valki after cascading a 3 or more CMC card. My two cents.
While I understand your logic, cascade gave you the ability to cast tibalt on turn 3. Emergent gives your opponent the choice to allow you to cast tibalt + a freebie on turn 7 for a fairly restrictive cost. Shit ain't the same imo
@@saturninewyrd But turn 3 or not, in Cascade the rules says you can cast cards with lesser CMC when cascading. Valki is 2 CMC and Valki and Tibalt are the same card, so you should be able to do so. However they changed it, precisely 'cause it was not logical since each side of the card has its own different CMC, 2 and 7 respectively (and different colour too, mind you), they had to fix it so the ruling fits what the mechanic is actually saying and be more consistent, logical and intuitive. In the same way, Ultimatum says mono-coloured cards. You should only be able to cast the mono-coloured part, that's what the mechanic is actually saying. It being "fair or unfair, broken or not" is irrelevant here, but consistency and intuitive, logical results based on the ruling. Edit: If Tibalt would be only red, or only black, then it would be fine, but is multi-coloured, hence it makes no sense with Ultimatum.
Same thing as activating a coating before casting karn so that they cant respond before you get to activate the ability. I guess he didnt get punished.
I've found having elder gargaroth as a 1 or 2 of is very useful for searching up against aggro decks, especially since the deck doesn't really have any life gain otherwise, which can be a problem if you are within stomp range of lethal. Also vorinclex is very bad in the main deck, searching it up with tibalt doesn't really work since the opponent can just give you alrund's + vorinclex, which gives you a lot of aggression but no card advantage, which might not be a problem if this wasn't a control deck. Because it is a control deck the opponent is usually at 20 life even at turn 7, which means that the 14 damage you can get in with the vorinclex + alrund's isn't lethal and can basically be answered by heartless act, which is not what you want your seven mana sorcery to be. However it's actually amazing post - sideboard in the mirror match, since after boarding out heartless act the deck pretty much has zero answers, given that its removal at that point consists of sagas and planeswalkers, which don't work against vorinclex. I've already won one very funny game where I played turn five vorinclex and simply beat face for the next four turns while my opponent dug for answers they didn't have.

I think what would frustrate me a lot more when playing this deck than playing against aggro is playing the mirror match. Unless I'm really land screwed, matching up removals against mono-red's threats and stuff is like a relaxing game of solitaire, and when I do stabilize it feels really nice. That's something about Magic that I'll always appreciate that will never go away, no matter what the meta is. On the other hand, the mirror match is just "hi yes i drew my ultimatum first please concede now". Enough of those, and I'll start thinking about how to make my own anti-Ultimatum deck.
I dont normally like most meta decks however, i do love this one. Unfortunately my wildcards are almost non existent. My heart broke durring the F2k tournament when mono white destroyed everything. (Already hated facing mono white)
I *was* rooting for them up until they played the Ugin. But I guess if you're trying to make janky colorless cards work in a competitive capacity, that's where you stick it.
Just played against a version of this deck but it had no chance against my abzan- yorion- blinky shenanigans. Got lucky but they resolved 3 seegates, an epithany and a kiora and I had no trouble dealing with them. Also, does anyone else think that alrunds epithany is one of the most annoying cards in this set?
@@lifeisawesome1391 I guess the disruption does not count but I agree, sultai Yorion should be better but I think it is kinda close. Too many counters can really hurt you in bo1, though.
I have a deck I want you to try, where do I go to send it in? Found a REALLY fun mardu snow yoriom kroxa build. Kardurs saga curves very well with omen of sun and ecd
Crafted this deck and it’s pretty much 50/50. And he’s right, it’s very tough against mono white. If you don’t draw your sweepers you get run over pretty quickly. What I found out is the best way to counter these small aggro decks is to ultimatum into Shadows’ Verdict, Extinctjon Event, and Eliminate or Heartless Act. It’s the only way to guarantee you get out of that mess.
Had a fun with this one a bit.. first few games were great than the almighty shuffler algorithms kicked in they had all the perfect curves and drawes and i kept getting shit hands and no ultimatums ...still love how the game just doesnt let u win or even have a chance
Why did CGB take 3 damage for killing terror of the peaks at 12:54? I must be missing something because why would he take 3 damage from a heartless act.
@@Amphok They made aggro too strong because control is too strong. They just keep making both ends stronger, meanwhile midrange decks are left in between wondering how to build vs both extremes. It's so annoying to try and pilot anything that doesn't try to kill by turn 3 or can't play a wincon by turn 5/6. Once you start optimizing your fun brewed deck you always end up being either more aggro or way more control at which point you probably turn it into a Yorion pile.
@@matthoward6130 i don't want to fill my deck with boring removal just to stop aggro from letting me ramp to my lovely genesis ultimatum, the problem is just the stupid embercleave
This is because of Vorinclex which doubles all counters. For sagas it means you immediately get two counters triggering both the 1st and 2nd chapter. Opposite is true for your opponent where sagas do nothing as all counters are halved rounded down :)
was because of vorinclex adding the second counter when it came into play. Vorinclex doubles counters if you play a permanent that gets counters. Halves those that opponents play. That's why their sagas never get any counters on them if you have vorinclex out on your side.
HEy CGB, what do you think of playing the llanowar visionary instead of cultivate? Yorion loves the visionary and even if he gets killed it is a 2 for 1.
one of the problems with that is that this deck wants to cast ultimatum as early as possible, and for that you need color fixing. cultivation lets you fetch the colors that you need, while the elf doesn't.
@@isaz2425 I can see that. I haven't had any issues with mana fixing with all the triomes and card draw. But I am running 4 mazemind tomes and less interaction than CGB
@@lifeisawesome1391 ok, maybe this deserves a try then. especially since it gives a blocker against aggro (although bonecrusher removes it very easily, and white can quickly become too big to trade )
I think the point of ultimatum's monocolor restriction is mostly to prevent it from casting an other ultimatum, so this combo isn't much more broken than expected during the card design. while cascade would let you play a card much more expensive, and therefore much more broken than planned, very early in the game. I think that's why they had to change the rule for cascade and not for ultimatum.
As someone who just downloaded the game about 6 hours ago, I have no idea what I'm watching. I have the white deck that heals a lot. But RUclips recommends, right?
Yoooooooooo Add solve the equation to this deck from Strixhaven and it makes it insane, basically gives you 4 more chances to pull emergent. I got screwed in a game where i had 20 lands out and still didnt pull an emergent, so i looked into the new packs and found a spell fetch that works insanely well with this.
Good thing about the deck is that you can sideboard really well against it. It struggles a lot vs any combination of Goldspan and counters. Even if you run creatures, Duress helps a lot because if you just take their payoff, the deck struggles to do anything. Might be powerful but the gameplan is too linear and easy to attack in competitive formats in my opinion.
I play it and it's usually fine, after side I have more counterspells to deal with the oponent's ones, and extinction event, yorion and shark typhoon to deal with the dragon.
16:26 "Doesn't matter what order" hate to be that guy, but aKsHuAlLy, if they have the Borrower they could bounce Tibalt with the Restoration on the stack and deny you one activation =P That is, of course, assuming I'm not stupid and am missing something about the way stuff gets in the stack with the Ultimatum, but it says "you may cast", which implies stuff can be added to the stack normally.
it's the worst matchup for this deck, as you can see if you check the tournaments' results. literally anything else is better (winrate was 33% for the matchup)
Playing this 20 years ago, i had 7 decks that used to destroy everything, the game looks so different right now, and on top i am so sad my brother sold my cards cause he needed the money asap .... while if i kept those cards they would be worth a fortune...

Not gonna lie...kinda rooting for the Cosmos Elixer deck. I really love that card.
CGB's version doesn't run counterpells. But I think Sultai Yorion with counterspells tends to beat Abzan Yorions most of the time.
Favorite moment: "Turd's Lantern..."
It’s the only way to guarantee you get out of that mess.
esika's chariot is pretty good against aggro. they need several cards to remove it completely with the tokens, and you can bounce it with yorion.
I'm waiting on my reappearance on this channel
1:08 you know that you have to do a mono red Ultimatum Deck now? :D
Had a fun with this one a bit.. first few games were great than the almighty shuffler algorithms kicked in they had all the perfect curves and drawes and i kept getting shit hands and no ultimatums ...still love how the game just doesnt let u win or even have a chance
If both players have Tergrid and one sacrifices a fabled passage does it bounce if always used immediatly?
It should indeed
@@marc-andrecote2948 playing a tergrid deck for hours but i dont find another one to bounce fabled passages ;(
Been playing this for days now, such a fun deck!
I'm still trying to draw cards after I cast Emergent Ultimatum, they all scoop lol, thanks CGB, this deck is really awesome!!!
CGB I think you forgot that binding the old gods is a removal spell in that mono red game with torbrand ♥️♥️♥️
has anyone tried putting a single red land in the deck so they can cast tibalt when he gets stuck in hand?
Most builds have one or two copies of the red-green-blue triome
Why did CGB take 3 damage for killing terror of the peaks at 12:54? I must be missing something because why would he take 3 damage from a heartless act.
target terror
The way he crushed minored that first game made me so happy!
Is world tree bad even though it would mana fix?
When the meta shifts but ppl still play rogues, mono red and mono white
The meta never shifted
they made aggro too strong, we need more hexproof cheap ramping creature, for example stuff like esika should have come with hexproof etc...
And the worse one, yorion players, why these people should die in rl?
@@matthoward6130 i don't want to fill my deck with boring removal just to stop aggro from letting me ramp to my lovely genesis ultimatum, the problem is just the stupid embercleave
Is it worth to craft this deck or is it going to get a counter deck soon?
This is when i wish i spent on Arena! Would love playing this!
This was a really cool deck and fun to watch.
Comment for the algorithm. Just what this fan wanted, a yoooooorion deck!
Why did the elspeths nightmare immediately go to taking the opponents card?
This is because of Vorinclex which doubles all counters. For sagas it means you immediately get two counters triggering both the 1st and 2nd chapter. Opposite is true for your opponent where sagas do nothing as all counters are halved rounded down :)
was because of vorinclex adding the second counter when it came into play. Vorinclex doubles counters if you play a permanent that gets counters. Halves those that opponents play. That's why their sagas never get any counters on them if you have vorinclex out on your side.
41:01 why it does not work?
HEy CGB, what do you think of playing the llanowar visionary instead of cultivate? Yorion loves the visionary and even if he gets killed it is a 2 for 1.
one of the problems with that is that this deck wants to cast ultimatum as early as possible, and for that you need color fixing.
cultivation lets you fetch the colors that you need, while the elf doesn't.
@@isaz2425 I can see that. I haven't had any issues with mana fixing with all the triomes and card draw. But I am running 4 mazemind tomes and less interaction than CGB
@@lifeisawesome1391 ok, maybe this deserves a try then. especially since it gives a blocker against aggro (although bonecrusher removes it very easily, and white can quickly become too big to trade )
so emergent can cast the planeswalker side but not cascading?
Paused at 0:56 look how Evil and Happy he looks xD
Goddamn. This deck is everywhere right now. Including in my own hands. Should probably add a few counterspell and remove a few spot removals
I've been playing against so many of these the last couple of days that I've just maindecked a couple of Necromentia just to deal with it.
hi, coolstuffinc.com does not exist or can't be reached?
what happened to the first 2 seconds of the intro?
It was fine for me. Do you mean the slide cut?
Same thing yesterday, so I guess it's intentional. Makes no sense musically speaking, though.
@@RuneDrageon The first few notes of the intro song is missing.
Those were some epic fights!
Seems like a good time for counter magic?
Yorion? CGB? What a twist!
After the first game, there was an 100% winrate
After the first game you saw.......
@Todd Packer yeah I know. Don't fault him. I do appreciate when he posts an epic loss though and that he's honest
@Todd Packer he used to post the whole thing on his other channel, but apparently not enough people watched them :(
31:15
7:24 i guess i want them to counter? Nice save, you even managed to sound smart.
The order does matter, if you cast tibalt first they can bounce before you activate
Double dose of CGB? Push back the meetings!
Some satisfying games brotha
Good thing about the deck is that you can sideboard really well against it. It struggles a lot vs any combination of Goldspan and counters. Even if you run creatures, Duress helps a lot because if you just take their payoff, the deck struggles to do anything. Might be powerful but the gameplan is too linear and easy to attack in competitive formats in my opinion.
I play it and it's usually fine, after side I have more counterspells to deal with the oponent's ones, and extinction event, yorion and shark typhoon to deal with the dragon.
27:47 The ultimate “no u”
Thanks for the video!
Does this thing seriously have 80 cards like the list on the link
Please create a deck around Toski the squirrel!
That red game was just something else.
Ok the 2nd red game just after was even better.
Those land cards are beautiful, how do i get them?
The basics were a sale when Theros was new. May be back as a daily deal eventually. The pathways are just an alt art that can be purchased.
@@joefat420 hope those basics come back soon.
1:06 yes, fetch three mono red cards... I choose fervent champion, robber of the rich and anax, that will get them!!!11
@Todd Packer Lol wtf are you talking about. Eldraine alone gave mono red a million different tools.
@@michaelmcdonald2005 Literally all their good stuff came from Eldraine lmao. Anax is like the only exception.
16:26 "Doesn't matter what order" hate to be that guy, but aKsHuAlLy, if they have the Borrower they could bounce Tibalt with the Restoration on the stack and deny you one activation =P
That is, of course, assuming I'm not stupid and am missing something about the way stuff gets in the stack with the Ultimatum, but it says "you may cast", which implies stuff can be added to the stack normally.
I'd say it looks like Tibalt hits the board before Restoration resolves, so you're probably right.
Tested this deck, and first match-up was against Izzet Goldspan. They drew like 5 counter-spells :(
it's the worst matchup for this deck, as you can see if you check the tournaments' results.
literally anything else is better
(winrate was 33% for the matchup)
CGB "get your ass to mythic"
Me that try so hard and fail - "Am I a joke to you ?"
I lost on Diamond 1.5 SIX freaking times this season before breaking through. I think that's actually a sign of a good meta.
Companions are now the Retro-Foretell Mechanism.
Playing this 20 years ago, i had 7 decks that used to destroy everything, the game looks so different right now, and on top i am so sad my brother sold my cards cause he needed the money asap .... while if i kept those cards they would be worth a fortune...
You called it cgb... now I want to see you play 4 color emergent ultimatum fetching 3 Red cards (fiery emancipation +Brash taunter+ sundering stroke)
And it's about time the best ultamatum gets reconition
Getting back into MTG with my favorite colors as #1 ok ok I’m coming back
my god these wins are crazy what vid :O)
Thanks CGB... Now as usual everyone will copy this deck and my "Rakdos sacrifice" will get dunked on even more... 😭
the way you just demolished the red deck at 25 minutes may have been one of your all time best magic moments. you should publish it seperately as a warning to monored players
Just think what this deck would be if Uro and Growth spiral weren't banned 😈😈
Along with Casualties of War having rotated out... :)
