Yes! We need a "Recoil Matters" shirt. Maybe with a guy holding the shotgun butt to his crotch...

When I was a kid, we would take 270’s, 30-06’s, and 30-30’s out shooting. We would take turns hiding behind a rock while everyone else would shoot the rock. We thought it was great and no one got hurt. Then the parents found out and the fun ended.

I was probably about 15 or 16, and unloading my Remington 870, 20 gauge after doing some pest control of ground squirrels in the horse pasture. Well being young and dumb I was unloading the shells as fast as I could rack the pump, probably to see how far out I could sling those rounds. Well luckily while the shotgun was still pointed in the air, the last shell as it was coming out of the chamber went off, while my finger was straight and off the trigger (was most likely being used to hold down the bolt catch). It surprised the heck out of me as it would anyone. The shell looked as if it had been normally fired except for a burst in the plastic out the side. Our guess is that the shell had smacked the bolt face or maybe extractor just right and hard enough with my enthusiastic pumping to set off the primer. The wad and shot must have made its way out of the barrel okay, but the side of the shell was exposed hence the opening in it meaning that it went off while outside of the chamber. I also had powder burns on the back of my hand near thumb and index finger where burning powder granules landed on my skin. After hearing your story, I'm also wondering if the primer may had been slightly sticking out of the base of the shell, because they were the bulk field/target loads. So luckily I wasn't injured, and no one else was (barrel was pointed skyward away from anyone), and after thoroughly inspecting the shotgun it was still in good shape. Things could have ended up worse. Now I'm less enthusiastic about unloading my Remington 870's, and even while unloading a weapon ensure that it is pointed in a safe direction (one of the 4 safety rules, or should it be one of the four shooting commandments).

That was some 4th of July story! And quite an example of watermelons for kids. That guy should wear a belt for heaven's sake. Funny.

We all watch these things and laugh for a moment, but then I think to myself that these are some of the people that help take guns away. At that point, I’m not laughing anymore
