3 Lessons Learned From Spending Over $400k on Facebook Ads

    Do you know what the most popular advertising network out there is? Google AdWords. You know what the number two most popular ad network out there is? Facebook ads.
    But running Facebook ads isn't as simple and easy as you think. I spent a ton of money on Facebook, and I'm going to show it to you, my mistakes, so that way, hopefully you can be much more successful than I was.
    Hi everyone, I'm Neil Patel, and today I'm going to share with you three important lessons learned from spending over $400,000 on Facebook ads.
    The first lesson I learned is, don't spend money on buying subscribers. A lot of the money I spent was to build up my fanpage of over 900,000 fans. Algorithms keep changing, yes, they may restrict how much viral your post or your video content can end up going, and a lot has to do with your content. If your content's not amazing, you're not going to get a lot of reach. But if you're going to be spending money, make sure there's ROI in it.
    The second thing I learned when you're doing ads, the best performing ads are videos by far. No one wants to create videos. Everyone wants to do banners because they're the easiest, but if you take the time to do videos, your cost is a lot less and your conversions are a lot higher. When you're optimizing for videos, make sure the text, there's a transcription, and it automatically starts playing, because video ads, the sound doesn't automatically show up for people. You want to have the transcription going there, so people can read, they're going to be much more likely to convert. With your video, it needs to convey emotions, it needs to be a good length.
    You need to get really people hooked, tell a story, because if you don't and you just try to get people click through to your site, and have the cheapest amount of clicks, it won't necessarily generate you the most amount of revenue. Don't optimize just for spend reduction, optimize for ROI. It's okay to be spending an extra dollar per click if you're making more money. Don't focus on how much you're paying per click. Focus on how much revenue you're generating for how much you're spending. That's the key with Facebook ads.
    The third tip I have for you, and this is what most people don't tell you, especially if you're running banners, in Facebook's algorithm, they look at hey this is a new ad, we're gonna push it, give it priority, and see how it does within the first few minutes or hour of it being up there. So what we started doing is, we would throw up ads, and within an hour of them being up, we would keep changing up the creative and the text or stopping them and running new ones.
    By doing that, we were getting much cheaper impressions and premium placements, and we were generating a much higher ROI in our ads. Most people won't do this, because they're like oh this is too time-consuming. But I kid you not, that one little thing during our peak was reducing our spend by over 30%. That's over 30%. If you're spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, that's a huge savings.
    Now eventually, as we kept scaling it out, we couldn't keep doing that, but we still do it with a lot of our campaigns, and still, to this day, when we're selling products for our clients, we're rotating up their creative so often, it's generating a much higher ROI. They think we're crazy, but hey you've got to do what you have to do if you want to compete in this competitive landscape, especially when Facebook ads continue rising in cost.
    So hopefully you've learned from my experiences and my mistakes, and best of luck with your Facebook ads. I already experienced that but couldn't figure out the logic behind having more engagement on new ads compared to ads that has been running for like 10+ hours.     Some great tips in here, I completely agree with #2. I think a lot of people just want to run banner ads when in reality videos can help you reach your goals a lot faster. Sure they may take a bit more effort to create, but I think the rewards in return from video ads out weigh the effort you need to put in - Volkan

    Hello Neil! Another great video! What percentage of Revenue should we be willing to spend on Facebook ads. Do you have any default percentages that you go back to when in doubt or uncertain what a good starting point is?

      Nope. No minimum, no default. Test to see what's comfortable for you and what gives you the ROI you are looking for.

Our company is new and we just got into Facebook advertising. My question for you is, what is the best way to convert a Facebook advertisement to a consultation? I've been able to convert people to our website but have had no consultations booked which is our big Call to Action. Any advice would be appreciated!

      Put the lead into a funnel where you continuously provide them with free exclusive content. This way they build trust over time.

    Hi Neil, Thanks so much for the awesome info! Curious about two things: 1) I was told that if you leave an ad on Fb (e.g. 7 days) it gets optimized over time to better target audience for conversions, but if you change it repeatedly as you suggest in Tip 3, do you lose this benefit? 2) Does repeatedly changing the copy, images, etc. for the same ad over a period of days interfere with A/B testing? Trying to understand how they could work together. Thanks again!

      1. I have seen good results testing sooner than 7 days. It gave me a sense of what people were interested in clicking on. 2. No because essentially I was A/B testing

      Drive traffic first and then start testing with conversions. Budget is relative. Start small to see what works before increasing.

When trying a new product, how much do you think I should spend on an ad to see if it is a winning product or not? Should I start email marketing with less than 50 emails or should I wait until I have a bit more. Thank you!

      Start small and test. You can start with 20 bucks per day to see how it goes then test a different ad and compare.

    Hi Neil, thanks for this video it was very informative. One quick question, yesterday I ran an ad and after 30 minutes I tried to change the text but facebook told me that I can't do that after the ad starts running so how do you change the creative to get cheaper impressions?

      Let the ad run for a day or two and then test a new ad with different copy for the same amount of time.

    I have been blogging from 2 months now.
    - Have published 16 articles(2000+)
    -Getting min. 10 FB shares within 24 hours of publishing.
    -Seo score as per your SEO analyses is 75+ on every post.
    But still my organic searching is 0 per day. Am I doing something wrong?

      Test different types of ads, new audiences, new copy, etc. It's good to keep testing so you can optimize the process.

      There is no right answer. Test both and test others as well. See what provides the best results.

    Hi Neil! Thanks for the video. Great insights. Look, I've got a question about tip number 3. When you say keep changing the creative you mean edit an ad which is active? Example, Ad1, first hour, change title, third hour, change image, and so on? Or do you suggest to active a whole new ad inside the same ad set every hour or two?       Better to have the same name. If you can't get it, use the name with "official" or something like that. Don't add "FB"

    Neil, I also hear other marketers say that you need to give ads at least 5 days for the algorithm to determine what is performing and what's not and optimize for that. I agree that you can tell easily which ads are doing well and which aren't right away, but wouldn't changing an ad withinn 24 hrs of being live be too early?

      I don't think so. 5 days is a very long time. You can easily test before that.

    Most of the landing pages I see for fitness products or services area pretty long. Is there a basic template of formula I can apply fo creating a great converting landing page from the Facebook ads I spend on?

      You can find "basic templates" but only use them as a guide and test different types to see what works best.

      Unfortunately, since this video was created there have been some changes to Facebook's ad review policy. Nowadays it takes longer for ads to be approved.

    Hey Neil, great tips and thank you for sharing value.
    Question: For a service based business which usually requires a discovery call, will FB ads work ok for this or would I need to use some sort of trip wire/freebie and then try to follow up and convert into a call?
    What would work best if you have experience in this?

      It really depends, Hassan. It could work, yes. Tripwires help a lot. You should test everything to see what works best for your particular service and your particular audience.

    If a campaign objective is purchase conversion, should we not give time to the campaign to optimize? If I make changes to my ad creative every hour or 4-5 hours, don't you think it'll affect the optimisation?

      The Craxy Store I agree with you. I don't know if the tip regarding changing the creative is correct. Facebook advertising has a Learning Period and you should let it perform for 3 days at least.
      Also, when you change the creative you lose all the engagement (likes, comments and shares). Such elements are important and they have huge impacts on metrics like CPC, CTR, and Relevance Score.
      Neil, I love your work, but my core business is based on designing Facebook funnels for ecommerces and I know for sure that this is not a legit growth hack. Besides the that, you should come back more often to Brasil! I have watch you in events like E-commerce Brasil and Vtex Day! Love you, man! Cheers, Guile

      Give it a day or two. Then test a new one. Or, test multiple ads simultaneously to see which brings the best results.

    How hard is to rank a keyword specific Domain.
    Because i have an domain that have searches arround 2 million in a month but a big company whoam i have a domain related is rank of the top so how can i compete with them and how much time it will take to rank a keyword related domain.

      There is no right answer to this question. There are far too many factors at play.

      You can start really small to find a good ROI and then scale up once you have money coming in from the results.

    I am a bit unsure when you mentioned in Top 3 to change creatives while you have just launched the ad. Do you mean pause, change the creative and make it active again? I have been warned that any changes I do would disturb the algorithm so I should duplicate and run a new creative as a new ad.

    Hi Neil, thank you for the video. I am starting learning about content and digital MKT, so it's really helpful.
    I have a question about Tip 3. As you recommend to review a FB ad after an hr launching and stop it and run new one - do you mean you always prepare various options to have FB review and run, or do you mean you stop that one and run that one again to take advantage of the FB algorithms?

      It's kind of hard now as Facebook has changed their ad platform a bit. It takes a lot longer for ads to get approved now.
      But what I meant was stop that ad a run a new ad!

    For accommodations what fo you think is the best landing page, i was testing with the website home but now I think maybe the contact form or the booking engine.. for sure I know barely nothing about fb ads but ive run a couple and I get calls and comments but people dont action on what I actually want which is bookings. Specially because the ad is to promote an specific date.

      Change up the ads, the copy, the images, the audiences, etc. Test new things to get new results. Don't just keep posting the same ad(s) if they are not bringing you results.

      Test different variations. Test a few different ads at different intervals to see what works best.
