Do I really need a third copy of King of Tokyo? Apparently.
Aarekk I brought this today, I only brought the 2nd edition months ago but FOMO got me. I guess I can still sell my 2nd edition to make room on my shelf.
This is my first copy. It looks great. And it has the favorites people missed from the original Krakken and Cyber Bunny. The Dark theme looks incredible!
@@Teremei Yes but is better to play withouth power ups? The thing that upset me is that here monsters are back to their original form: identical each other, withouth any gameplay difference.
Love the art in this. That box cover is frame worthy.
We loved and played Kings of Tokyo a lot of time. And I sold my old edition + Power Up, and got the new edition, mainly because I loved the look of it and we wanted to support Iello. I agree 100% with all you said. There is only one comment that we live through a different experience, only 4 or 5 of those 40+ games we played, were won by points. We are probably a bit more agressive than most then. :-)
But it's still great silly fun. That's the game that put Iello on the map... By the way, did you know that Iello owner, was the one to contact Richard Garfield, to ask him if he add anything to publish? And that game as been rejected by a few publisher and was the main game that put Iello in business? Saw a French interview last year where he told the story of how it all began!

I thought the same thing, I have played 30+ games and have seen only maybe half a dozen end by points
solid review mate. I've always wanted this game in my collection but kept it on the back burner, but so glad i did because i prefer the aesthetics of the dark edition. Just a quick note for anyone curious, you can still use all expansions (ie. characters like anubis, cthulu) as well as the power up expansion with this version. I know the power up expansion was mentioned by tom, but can't remember if he confirmed that it could Also be used along with the wickedness track. I agree though that you may not feel the need to use the power-up expansions, but i still chuck them in with my group along with wickedness track.

I am thinking if buying or not this game. Me too I prefer much more this aesthetics, and me too I am wondering if with power-ups is a better game; to me it seems the answer to be yes, it's a better game. It's nicer to differenciate monsters by their powers... But at the same time it appear to me much less dynamic, with too much thinking going on, which is not the reason this game got so famous in my opinion. I think I'll go for this dark edition without any power-ups!
The new mechanism looks nice, I hope it comes out for the earlier versions as I prefer the more colorful and cartoon look of the original.

How long do the "Wickedness" tiles stay in play (other than the one that says to discard after use)? Are they continual, one time use, or a mix- like the Energy cards?
They stay with you and only you and the effect applies for the whole game. So, it's sort of like a power-up card, once you claim one, nobody else has that power but you.
Should I get the power expansion and use it for this dark version or no? Would it be too over power?
Debating on getting this version or the monster box. Monster box comes with the power ups but no wicked track. Dark edition has the wicked track but no powerups. Which one would be the better buy?
I use the old Power Up expansion, with the new King Of Tokyo dark edition all the time... I can't see why not to use it?
The wickedness cards have me a bit confused. Do you pick which side of the card you use? Or is there something that determines if you get the red or green side?
You choose which side you want. Red is recommended for first game, green or mixed red/green later games.
I'm enjoying the reviews, and top 10 videos quite a bit. The only problem is that I'm adding so many games to my want list, that it's going to be hard to choose which one to buy next. But I'm thinking this will be the next one. It looks like way too much fun.
I never played the original but I FINALLY got this because of the Wickedness (W) mechanic, got the PowerUp expansion along with it too. Going up in the Wickedness track is really powerful and well worth it! We barely want to roll for 3s in the game.
Pandakai’s “Ying & Yang” Evolution card (Flip all your dice to the opposite side) was always used to make 3s become 1s to get the 2W points. That evolution card probably got more powerful thanks to this mechanic, as doubles your chances that you’ll move up in W.
On a side note, Pandakai being friendly and huggable looks funny when facing against the menacing-looking monsters of this edition.

Second copy for me when I bought it last year, just bought King of New York, it’s power up pack, Anubis and Cypertooth expansions 2 minutes ago
They say they are only doing one printing of this, so once these are gone, that's it.
I picked it up and it's absolutely gorgeous. Love the dark artwork, great use of lighting, shadows, and colour. The insert makes storage so much easier (take a lesson FFG), and the new wickedness adds just the right amount of reward for pursuing it.
ScytheNoire too bad the cards are flimsy... and when sleeving the cards the insert will be too small. They never think about sleeves...
TimofKings This game wouldn’t need sleeves though, right? You never really hold the cards in your hand.
@@alecgalbraith5604 This is light enough to be a family game. Which, inevitably for some of us, means both kids and adults handling these cards with greasy fingers. So even if the contact is limited, I prefer to protect my cards from dorito fingers. Especially if I'm shelling out for a limited edition.

i did. you dont need to get it, usually in board gaming, most things are not a necessity. Basically, if you are a fan, then get it, and if you want to simplify the power-up aspect of the game, then get it. Wickedness track just makes it more streamlined.
I see no issue on why you couldn't use the expansions other than the Halloween customes.
The wickedness idea really changes the game. I didn't have any of the series before, but this one is just so great I think you will really enjoy it! And if you don't it's limited print so it will retain some value
Do you want to play with other characters from expansions and have it look like they belong together? If you don't care, this sounds like a good version to get. For me, I'm staying away because I enjoy all the other characters and I wouldn't like having some look like this cool aesthetic and others be the cartoonier ones, which I also enjoyed the look. I mean, this game has always been much sillier, so I always felt the original art really suited the game.

Not what came to mind when "Dark edition" was in the title. Still it looks great, and if i didn't have KoT then i think i would pick it up. I wouldn't mix and match these two versions together tho... and the original with its expansions are still a blast.
Nah... I still prefer the look and feel of my First Edition. Plus, Power Up Expansion makes it so each monster is unique.
IMO the dark design makes this version harder to distinguish each monster apart. Moreover, the Wickedness tracker makes the power ups generic. However, this mechanism did give me an idea how to balance the unimpressive triple 1 and 2 results. Here is my improved house rule:
- triple heart results still draws a Power Up card. However, this time is only available when monster is in Tokyo or in the Bay
- triple 2 results give player one Wickedness token (you can use any other colored cubes or tokens)
- triple 1 results give player two Wickedness tokens
- specialized tokens can be traded in for the following:
* 1 health per 2 Wickedness tokens (subject for re-balancing)
* 1 Power Up card per 3 Wickedness tokens
* 2 Power Up cards per 5 Wickedness tokens (adds some push-your-luck)
* 3 Power Up cards per 6 Wickedness tokens
Never played any edition of this game, but was searching for a new 6 players game to try. I find the design on this one much cooler than the originals (1st and 2nd edition). The cards look awesome, the monsters much intimidating than let's say Space Penguin ! And on top of that the price is almost the same except I don't need to buy the Power-up expansion, thanks to the new tiles.

Game sounded cooler to me then it looks, i much prefer the colorfull cast with it's more carachteristic kaiju's. Still fun that they added a special edition but for me i'll pass.
The more colorful monsters are compatible with this version too. So if you'd rather play with the brighter, goofier monsters, but still like the wickedness gimmick, you can.
I'm finally playing the original version this Christmas.
Glad this one happened to come out right around the time my old copy had an unfortunate encounter with someone's mug of coffee. Now I don't need to feel silly owning two copies of the same game!

Glad they fixed the issue of the 1 and 2 point rolls. Long ago when I owned the game, we always had to make some of our own house rules cause of how worthless it was to keep 1's.
jumpyg1258 Pretty much every game with dice has less desirable options when you roll. That’s why you can re-roll. Also, there are some cards that make rolling 1s and 2s more advantageous.
I liked in the King Kong expansion with the introduction of the towers , give you a reason to roll four 1s.
I’m buying this now! This looks like the best version with the new mechanic. They also improved the 2 player experience and several people already said it even work well with 2 players now. You can even buy the power up! Expansion and play with this version because it’s compatible.
I wish the Iron Rook promo had evolution cards! We always use that character, then have to take it out or use someone else's evolution cards when we play that expansion. Still, we've enjoyed it!

I’m surprised the gameplay is pretty much the same as the original instead of with more new features to make it a new game in the series. Personally, I just love the original game artwork on the cards and the power up expansion (which should just be included in the base game) so much more. I could see how someone who didn’t have the original game and liked the glow-in-the-dark artwork might choose this one though. Energy components look great. I’d love to update the original with these! Also, I wish they would put out minis of the monsters and not just standees.
I feel you. I purchased Labyrinth in January. In July, I was at a gaming store to pick up D9 dominoes and I saw they had the glow in the dark version. Had I not already purchased the normal version, I'd have purchased this version instead. The glow in the dark feature is neat but not enough to justify the purchase of a whole new game.

Agree, the only real choice between this and the original is the artwork and upgraded conponents. The wickedness track is just a more streamlined power up expansion.

In the original edition I have never had someone win by points, its always player elimination. I'm very intrigued by the dark edition because it looks like they tweaked the rules in order to encourage point gain and other strategies besides just damaging opponents.
Played a lot of Dark edition with a lot of different groups. I also played a lot of King of NY and original King of Tokyo with/without expansions. I would say this is my favorite game. It has a very clear and distinct feeling to it: you feel rewarded by playing the game and pushing your luck no matter what strategy you pursue or what tactics you try. Staying in Tokyo still worth a lot especially in 3 player and 5 player games. Rolling 1 points and 2 points dice doesn't feel like a waste anymore. In fact the wickedness cards are a great balance mechanic. Energy is still worthy for the upgrades, but we play with 2 separate decks from which we draw 2 cards: evolution (keep) and discard cards. You can alter the number of placed cards until the game feels ok. The game is a total blast with any group.
Minor rules edit: Overconfident player that is in Tokyo is not eligible for dice health points. A player in Tokyo may use health bonuses with card actions.
Wow... Only just played this on the weekend, and the group I played with said they almost always win by eliminating everyone else, only once won by points... Interesting for Tom to say the opposite.
When I heard this was coming out I pre-ordered it. Got it and Love it. A must buy for families and gamers. When we play it just laughing and talking galore.

I kind of hope that the wickedness mechanic will be added as a stand alone expansion to the original game. I like the idea but I'm not a fan of the darker board and color scheme.

The tiles mechanic seems better than the power up evolutions. For instance, it's less explaining you have to do, it's less of people getting hearts like crazy.
True... but... one of the great things about the Power Up cards was that each monster had a unique batch, so it made them all a bit special until themselves. Also, we have a house-rule in our games where if you get 3 hearts for a Power-Up card, you don't also get the health from those dice... you need to pick.

Yes, DT is primarily for 2p, this is for more players.
Yes it’s different enough.
They’re both Yahtzee variations. If you love the Yahtzee mechanic, there’s enough differences. But if you’re lukewarm with DiceThrone, I don’t think KoT will change your mind about the mechanic.

if you want to simplify the power-up aspect of the game...the wickedness track is basically power-ups > simplified and streamlined for simpler play. I love it. I'll always play with this one. On the other hand, if you really want to throw in the power-up cards, they are pretty much compatible with the dark version, so there you have it.
As with all new editions, it mostly depends on how much you enjoy the game vs how much money you can afford to spend on a slight upgrade. If you have another game you have your eye on, and a limited budget, you'll probably want to get said game instead.
Personally I am tempted, and probably would have gotten it. But current circumstances have me being a bit more frugal than usual. So I might have to bow out of this one, as cool as it is. The slight rule tweaks, and the dark art style just aren't enough on my currently limited budget.
I would say yes since you're already thinking of buying it. Do it for the upgraded components.

I played the original once than bought the dark edition. My first roll I had 3 smash and said ah I see how this is going and chose to kill everyone. Because it was 5 player we had 2 in Tokyo and the took damage a bit faster than they would have liked and were greedy as it was the first time for them too and they were learning their limits. Two people got eliminated after about 10 minutes game was about 35 40. The third died near the end. It came down to an epic final turn where the player in Tokyo had 18 victory points but 3 life. I managed to roll 3 smashes to win the game.
Some new cool mechanics, but I really dislike the dark colored theme. Wish there was something similar (expansion or core game) that was published for king of tokyo.

Cool aesthetic but mixing the other content will just be dissonant with the new look. I figured I'd be a pass and so I am. I love those extra dice though 😍
It's clear I have OCD, but I can't help but feel upset at Tom's suspenders never being even.

Our own fault? Yeah, right. I once played a 6 player game in my LGS, the very first managed to roll and keep 5, FIVE claws! And then the second player did the EXACT same thing. It's a two hit kill Tom! :(
Not to necro a 1 year old post, but the 1st player can't attack, claws do nothing on the very first player roll, you don't move into Tokyo until you settle dice actions. So in that scenario what should have happened is p1 gets energy/vp/wickedness, and has to move into Tokyo. p2 hits 5 claws, but has to target p1 in Tokyo, so he does 5 damage to p1, and p1 can retreat or stay and p2 has to move into tokyo.

"I usually see the game won by points". This is the problem I have with this game. I've tried out the original game with three different groups and every time everyone said "why bother fighting when I can just keep rolling to get points" and that was all what everyone did - just rolled for points. Technically, there's nothing wrong with doing that. It's a strategy. But it definitely made the game boring.
In the groups I've often played the game with, it's often reasoned completely different: Why bother rolling for points if I can beat up everyone "easily" before they get to 20? This is especially true when playing with 5 or 6 players, because 2 monsters in Tokyo focussing on attack can easily dominate point gathering players as those are now forced to roll for hearts and are less likely to get points or to attack back.
Most games I've played go into a phase of beating up players until 2 or 3 remain, after which either someone can win by points easier than the other 2 can damage that player or a player can push enough damage to remove the other player(s) from the game.
And even with such a solidified metagame in our groups, it's often not boring because there is an inherent 'push your luck' element that makes it exciting for us. How greedy can you be for remaining in Tokyo? Can you risk defeating a player in Tokyo while you are on 4 health and the other players outside Tokyo are both at 1 or 2? etc...
I always go for the kill. I win every time

That's more a problem with your players than with the game.
20 is farther than 10, and you need a minimum of 3 dice to score them. If people kept winning through points in your games, your group is too passive.
Meh, in our groups the game was almost always won by the boring fart, who collected VPs instead of rampaging Tokyo even by the old rules. Even though, this new variant reward rather the low VPs, I see no reason, why VP strategy at all should be further buffed.
If you see someone collecting VPs that puts a target on their back. A lot of times when I get higher VPs I get savagely attacked by everybody.
VP is a noble win, it's a harder win.
@@benjaminspears8488 I don't see, how. If you are collecting VPs while avoiding going into Tokyo or going out as soon as possible, the only player, who can harm you is the one in Tokyo. And you can mitigate harm by them by collecting Hearts as well.
