She was a beautiful skater with effortless skating skills. Her edges, footwork, gracefulness, speed and ice coverage were the best at the time. IMO, she was the best all-around female skater ever produced by Japan.
I've never forgotten her. She's one of my all-time favorite ladies skaters. Scott Hamilton used to say that her greatest strength was her lack of weakness -- she did everything superbly.
She actually *did* have a significant weakness... toe jumps. She relied nearly exclusively on edge jumps as a pro (loop, salchow, axel), which you can get away with in that stage of your career. But there's a reason why she was never a major medal contender. She won the 94 Worlds with the entire podium from the Olympics absent. She had brilliant skating skills, jumps were not usually that hot for her. Her toe jumps were terrible. Even when she added the easiest one, the toe loop, later in her pro career it was not a good jump for her, yet it's the easiest triple.
