    One of the draws to be about the Torrent is those enormous fans, so when you only have one of them or in this case you swap them out to install an AIO, a lot of the benefit of the case seems to be lost to me. I could be wrong though. I ordered a Torrent Compact to see what kind of thermals I can get with those two enormous fans--fingers crossed!

    Thanks for actually using the front 120/140mm fan brackets Nick, only video I've seen that does this.
    If you haven't torn this down yet, I would be interested to see if you have a similar experience to me with your FE card thermals, I found that having a fan placed directly below my 3070FE actually increased the temps on the GPU compared to no fans, I think the fans on the FE coolers work best when there's >10mm air pocket in front of them, or they're unusually susceptible to turbulence. On my NR200P, I had to mount my bottom intake fans under the case and replaced the stock feet with taller ones in order to avoid this.
    Personally I have been toying with the idea of moving my build over to the Meshify C Mini for the MATX support further down the line, considering how close the torrent nano is in terms of size to that (it's within 1cm in each direction iirc), it seems like it has none of the benefits of going ITX - even if it is really pretty

    • @tinypatches6939

      try to vertical mount FE cards on itx builds. blow air from beneath and suck it out on top. on vertical builds you have so much more space for good airflow if you use cases which only allow vertical airflow as with the jonsplus i100. Use good fans as well like thermaltake toughfan 12/14.
      My Jonsplus build is super quiet and has an RTX3080FE to fit. Undervolted im on 71celsius with high load on Warzone/Pubg with 120-150FPS on QHD.

      @@tinypatches6939 Not entirely sure what you're getting at here tbh. Are you saying replace the case with something that is sandwich layout or similar?
      If so it's quite an expensive option once you add a new case, new CPU cooler (currently using a 120mm tower) and a new PSU (currently using an ATX unit).
      My solution was to raise the case on slightly taller feet and mount the fans below it so there's a air gap between them and the card and I am getting up to about 67C max under gaming loads. My point was that with the fans inside the case (i.e.

      @@AxR558 sorry my answer was a little bit out of place. I just meant when you consider to move your build over to another case and you want good temps in an itx build the look out for cases which allows you to vertical mount gpu's. because then you really have ITX benefits = small build and good temps with low noise. My answer wasn't even considering using the torrent nano.
      You was talking bout FE Cards and high temps and that's almost always because of the mounting position of those cards. if you think about it logically you have one of those two gpu fans throwing hot air under it self and there there is only little way to let it escape. with vertical mounts its way much easier to get rid of the hot air. I have build 6 different PC's all with FE Cards by this time and my smaller itx build with vertical mount has the best temps of all. And iam talking about ITX and Big Tower builds, no matter what the vertical mount had the best temps.
      Excuse my english, I hope you understand my point of view.
      "I'm guessing that the FE fans are not optimised to work in turbulent/confined places." - that's completely the case!

    • @AxR558
      @AxR558 2 года назад

      Ah, yeah absolutely get what you mean and totally agree - really anything that moves the hot exhaust away from the back of the card has a major benefit to temps.

    I understand that ITX doesn't equal SFF, but this definitely looks like an MATX case that has ditched the MATX compatibility to allow for a standard PSU to be used with an ITX only motherboard tray. Perhaps they wanted the ITX label to be able to charge the ITX tax. That aside, Fractal did a good job in maintaining the design language for the front grill on this smaller case.

    • @sch-corp
      @sch-corp 2 года назад +1

      Agree with all of this and Fractal are known for terrible pricing (at least in Australia) so my cynical mind thinks that they've lopped 1 pcie slot off to sell it as a "premium" ITX case. They could have made it an inch taller to support mATX...reminds me of the Phanteks Evolv ITX vs the mATX model, which was barely bigger.

    What's the point with bottom fans when there is literally 3 fans on the gpu close to the bottom? The bottom fans are so the cabinet itself gets cool air from the bottom so it can give the gpu fans cool air. So I guess it's actually just not needed.
    It's pure science. Heat moves to cold area. So all you have to do, is make sure your pc have overpressure to avoid dust coming in, and then remove the hot air. Lets say you didnt need the overpressure, you could just as well only have exhaust fans. But that works both ways. If the air in to create overpressure have plenty of space to get out, you don't need exhaust fans either.
    This case here, will give the gpu the cool air from the bottom. This case will also create overpressure with the massive fan at the front, and this case will also remove the hot air. So in all honesty, and please correct me if I am wrong (wrong as in this is actually tested and not just your opinion), but I believe that this case only needs ONE fan in front and that's it. The gpu has dedicated coolers, and so has the cpu. The cpu cooler has one function: Remove heat from the cpu. Where that heat is being placed, doesn't matter. If it's being moved to a water cooling radiator, or being moved just another place in the cabinet, doesnt matter. The main point is to move the heat away from the cpu. And what is doing that? The heat sink and the cpu fan. The water cooling radiator isnt removing the heat from the cpu. It's cooling down the water, and the heat that is being cooled down, is being blown back into the cabinet, which then needs to be removed with exhaust fans because the radiator is being cooled by front fans, so the airflow is more limited. Hence why I think watercooling is massive overrated. Only reason I would like water cooling, is if I could cool down both gpu and cpu with the same radiator and the radiator placed at the bottom. The hot air in the cabinet will then be moved by fans.

    Honestly after having a Louqe Ghost S1. This would be the ideal size because I can't deal with CPU heat. Keeping my Ryzen 3900 cool in the Ghost Louqe is hard and it hovers over 45 degree C. Because of that it throttles and I also need more space so I guess this is the one to go with. I've had 2 AIO failures and want to go with Air cooling now. With this it would be possible.

    When I looked at cases for my gaming PC build, several cases I liked were literally 2cm too short fro a 330mm graphics card since I have a radiator for CPU cooling as that would be placed in the front. I looked at the Torrent Compact, and it's the same thing all over again, except maye 3-4cm too short :P But quite happy with the Core V21 though.
    Having the PSU in the top is great. They used to be there are from now on, they should be there for most cases as it's so easy to change things later and for installing, and you can use direct air from from the bottom!
    More great music! \o/

    Just built in this rig im really digging the fact i can plug in the 24pin and PCIe cables from the top down i zip tie to the 180m fan and bottom fo case for PCIe and it makes for a clean build. The included brackets for installing ²x 140m fans in front. But the paint is really susceptible to scratches made mistake of tilting it on my wall at a angle and it scratched the black paint on the plastic not a dig on case as it's beautiful more a lesson put foam agaisnt wall if needing to angle a case against it 🤣

      What for? The original fractal torrent has the best air cooling you can get, without a mesh side panel. If you want an open air case, just get an actual open air case my dude.

    I feel fractal need to do a bit of work on the irx version. If it's not sff, then make or longer, add 280mm support with 330mm gpu clearance. I'd go the lian Li case over this given its 280mm aio support.

    Little on the big side but looks pretty good due to that extra width it makes it work out ok with the larger (For itx only) size. Honestly since the look and CPU clearance lends itself to it I probably wouldn't use this with water cooling: the ideal use is that front 180mm fan and a beefy noctua NH-D15 or something similarly big.
    So if you do any revisits on this I'd kindly request some air temps instead with that 180mm default fan.

      if you're still wondering - the meshilcious is about half the volume of this case. And it does well with large graphics cards and 280mm rads, so it can handle high end components easily. Some build quirks with it, but if space is a premium I'd go with the meshilcious.

    I wonder if using TG on the back panel is somehow cheaper because it makes no sense to me. Why would anyone want glass on the back when we want to hide things?

    I just built my first pc in a lancool mesh 2. It seems ridiculously large and my mATX board only takes up a fraction of the interior.

    It reminds me of my Bitfenix Prodigy. Too big for an ITX. I have regretted it because it’s always difficult to upgrade parts and cost more. Just buy a small ATX case.

  • @emp1985
    @emp1985 2 года назад +1

    Big issue with this case is exhaust. It's critical for ITX/small form factor. If you put a massive fan in front, and can only put a standard 120mm in the back, it will be difficult to keep a negative pressure environment in the case... which is what affects GPU temps massively. NOT putting intake fans under the GPU in thi scase makes much more sense. Other than that, it's a gorgeous case.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench 2 года назад

      Well, the Torrent is designed for positive pressure. Negative pressure works better in some case, like sandwich style ITX cases, where some cases work better in neutral pressure and some work better in positive pressure. There's no catch all here.
