I heard a theory once, that Escaflowne is the most anime anime ever to exist. In one series, you have isekai, giant transforming mecha, a magical girl in a sailor outfit, catgirls, bishounen, oversized swords, a nuclear weapons allegory, airships and a giant lizard rampaging through Tokyo. No improvement is possible.

i remember staying up late at night at my grandma's house. everyone was already asleep and i turned on the tv and saw this. what a seriously epic experience it was. like i was watching the most fantastical fantasy adventure ever. this song has stuck in my mind all this time. i'm 27 now.
This tv series is fabulous, the characters design is neat. It aired in Argentina in 2001. I was 15.
I never watched the complete anime, but I love the OST.

- downloaded the first 2 episodes of every single anime via Kazaa back in the day when I was like 18 or younger,
56k had its charm - because one episode was treasured big time
was lucky to find a powerful seed/seeders

Oh gosh, the memories! This used to be one of my favorite shows as a kid! Now I’m 30 :’)
It was 1999. My Mom and Dad were split up. Me and my Mother were living in my Sister's basement at the time. Saturday mornings on Fox, back then it was on channel 5, and the show had a totally different opening. Loved it, as well as the show. Show had the Ocean Group that voiced the dub. They were Canadian. It was the number one show for me at the time. It stopped about halfway through the series. For years I didn't know what was gonna happen next. Then I bought the DVD collection in 2007, by then I was gainfully employed. I watch the first episode and saw how the story actually began. I don't think the first episode aired on Fox back then, I could be wrong.
Then the second episode started and this song came on...it was the most beautiful thing I ever heard. I got to finish the anime. I loved it even more. It's been 13 years since then. By now I've seen the Funimation dub, and I actually like it more. To each his own. To me this song symbolized my freedom. For I started to learn to spread my wings.

@@philliphoyle5848 I feel you there. When I started the DVD collection it was a Saturday. I listened to this song over and over again. I cried when I heard it too. The only song that has ever touched me in an emotional way that strongly before was The Dark Citital from Doom 64. Scariest song I ever heard. Very creepy.

To this day, this song will just make me involuntarily start crying. It just all comes together as such a raw emotional experience. I can still picture in my head how it fits perfectly with the animation. The dragon cresting over the hill at the zenith of the vocals at 1:09 just always does it.

I forced my little sister to watch this anime. She resisted for a long time because it "looked so ugly". After we watched through the whole series together, I caught her YouTubing this song at breakfast. She said she had been listening to the song nonstop and starting her day to it -as part of her mourning phase post-the-end-to-a-great-series.
I just came off of Naruto and then back into Escaflowne after not watching it for 16-17 years and now experiencing the same as your sister!
Ed The Red The nostalgia hits real hard on the rewatch of this show, doesn’t it? Really transports you. So I’ll wait a few more years before I watch it again to maximise the effect too 😊
The funny thing being the entire show was conceived as a Shounen, and then was intentionally morphed into more of a Shoujo and they beautified all the male characters.

Escaflowne is the perfect anime. There really isn't a thing wrong with it I can find, it just has everything.
Escaflowne was one of the first DVDs i bought back then, and it was very popular among my circle of friends, everything is great, to the art style to the amazing ost, so it was very shocking to acknowledge that in fact the series didn't go well in Japan so it was rushed to just 26 episodes instead of 2 seasons (as it was originally planned).
Well it doesn't matter, it may not be one of my favorites but i have good memories watching and the scene where Vaan mourns his brother is beautiful and very heartbreaking

30 years old dude here discovering Escaflowne since last week ... It's simultaneously the most anime anime, blending all tropes in an inpossible but seemless patchwork that actually makes sense.
Every time I have some kind of expectation like "uh, high school girl in love with her sports senpai, classic shojo, so next she'll ... uh, giant dragon and archetypal shonen hero, so I guess it will go in that direct-... uh ok so now multi layer intrigue in a parallel world somehow connected to the real world without really knowing how or why ? ... Ok, tell me more !" it gets destroyed and replaced by another trope. It's like all the cliches annihilate each others, and as soon as some trait of a trope becomes annnoying, something new comes to replace it and adds a fresh touch to it even though by itself it would have looked stale ! And it's almost 30 years old. I'm only at the 14th episode and I already know it's a masterpiece. Also as an artist it's really inspiring as interesting originality can just be an elaborate collection of copy/paste from multiple genres. I hope I can instill some of this knowledge and philosophy into my music hopefully.
Also yeah, the reason I was interested by this is by hearing on another video that the music was the work of Yoko Kanno, which is the goddess of modern japanese composition, so like George says : What else ?

i used to dislike this anime, but with the overflowing isekai genre in the anime nowadays, it makes me appreciate this anime.... and maybe one of the best isekai anime ever!
It was definitely one of the pioneers of the isekai "genre", in my opinion.
