Enjoyed watching your video of the old world method of making these delicious nut and poppy seed rolls. I use a recipe handed down from my grandmother who emigrated to the U.S. in 1904, and we add raisins to the fillings. My mother made babalki for Christmas and Easter. I had forgotten the name of them so thanks for sharing. I will make a batch next time I make poppy seed rolls.
Thank you for this! I've been wanting to try to make nut roll and have been looking for a Slovak recipe. Of course my grandmother never wrote her's down. I watched and took notes, so I'm hoping for the best!
Thank you Otilia - very nicely done! I hope you will not mind a couple of suggestions. First, my mama used a pinch of ground cloves in the makova plnka, which really picked up the delicious poppy flavor. And at Christmas, she would use orange zest in the poppy seed filling, not just the clove powder. Also, I believe there is a noticeable difference between grinding the poppy seeds and actually pressing them through a real poppy seed grinder (mlyncek na mak). I used to use a spice grinder, but a few years back a friend brought me one from the old country (one of my aunty's) , and I never looked back. These things release more flavor and oils from the seeds. Hope this helps and warmest greetings!
My Grandmother was a Czech, she cooked all day every day, This was a must for the holidays!!! Love them!!
I toss the bobalky in warm honey and poppy seed. Always a hit at Christmas Eve dinner.
