Oh boy! The Prep Step! I haven’t heard this record in 30 years when the late Rich Conaty played it on his Big Broadcast. What an indispensable lineup of pop tunes 1929-1930 delivered in the highest quality audio!

@@Prozoot Anytime! I love cranking up your channel through the speaker system in my truck. Let me tell you, aside from cold, cold beer (I don’t drink and drive lol), it is a slice of heaven on earth as I’m tooling along. Speaking of highways, we are getting ready to move to Florida from New England so I haven’t been busy with my own records. I’m actually downsizing the collection, parting with the common stuff that I’ve accumulated over the years and, like yourself, holding on to the truly good records I enjoy.

@@alphaomega3374 I was fortunate to be able to receive the Big Broadcast on its weak FM signal almost from the outset of Rich’s first programs in the mid 1970s. Many a Sunday night was spent enjoying Rich’s show. This is why I enjoy Prozoot’s channel so much. He picks primo performances and presents them as an entertaining mix, a skill that seems easy until one tries doing it. The audio is professionally crafted so we benefit from hearing everything that those old record grooves have in them. So we are actually continuing a legacy at a higher level now. Great stuff.

@@docmurph8681 ....last year I installed a new sound system in my Toyota. I added an amplified subwoofer and four new high-quality speakers. Plus, a player that runs WAV files written to a thumb drive. And WOW, it sounds like a 1920s dance hall in my car. Unfortunately, I now can't afford the gas to go anywhere -- like everyone else!!

_Inside Facts of Stage & Screen,_ an LA trade paper, printed a lineup for the Stafford band on Oct. 11, 1930, during their engagement at San Francisco's Palace Hotel: Ken Howard-Art Winter-t-v/Montague Barton-tb/Chuck Moll-s-cl-o-f/Basil Adlam-s-cl-o-bsn-v/Gene Sigrist-s-cl/George Rose-vn/Gene Rose-p-arr/Dub Kirkpatrick-bj-v/Lofty Smearer-bb-sb/Eddie Forrest-d/Charlie Blane-v. Barton and Forrest also did "dancing." Stafford conducted but did not play.

Because Warner Bros. owned the Brunswick label at the time, Jesse and his band were chosen to appear in one of their early "Vitaphone Varieties" in 1929.

Notes from a reedman: The band pic suggests Stafford used a section of 3 alto saxes at least part-time. The conventional big band section of course was 2 altos plus tenor. 3 altos would have given the reeds the light tone heard on some of the recordings. There is a good tenor sax soloist as well.
There's also some good, semi-hot bassoon playing on several sides, possibly by Buzz Adlam, who doubled various reeds and went on to be a busy composer and conductor. Another reedman, Gene Sigrist, was with the band under both Herb Wiedoeft and Stafford. He may be the excellent hot clarinetist. Doubles in the section include bari sax, bass clarinet, oboe, flute and tin whistle.
For those not so reed-focused, I'll note that you may be hearing 2 trombonists in the ensemble, Stafford and Clyde Lucas (who may be replaced by Monty Barton on the 1930 session). Not sure who played the solos. Lucas led a very good, under-recorded showband later in the '30s.
Finally let's credit the topnotch work of the 2 Wiedoeft brothers, who continued in the band after Herb Wiedoeft's fatal accident: Gerhard (Gay), tuba, and Adolph (Ad), drums. Their crisp musicianship adds much. They may be replaced by Lofty Smearer and Eddie Forrest, respectively, on the band's last session, May 5, 1930.
The last records credited to Stafford, in 1931, were actually made by Victor Young in New York, perhaps to close out Jesse's contract.

You're spot on about the personnel changes, and those guys are heard on these 1929-30 recordings. The Lucas Brothers (Clyde and Leon, aka Lyn) and Ad and Gay Wiedoeft Brothers all left the band in the spring of '29. I'm not sure exactly when Forrest joined on drums -- maybe as soon as Ad Wiedoeft left -- but both Smearer and Monte Barton were with the band as early as the fall of '29, as was Adlam; former longtime Wiedoeft band member Red Abbott went to San Francisco with the band in early in '29 and was with it through the latter half of '29; he was replaced by Chuck Moll (formerly with Glen Oswald, Henry Halstead and others) by the time of the May 1930 session.

@@sockgoblin2600 great work here...so it _is_ Adlam on bassoon and Moll on oboe.
Is "Red" Abbott the guy usually called Larry? Larry was a very distinctive sounding lead alto player on NY sessions, and also played hot kazoo. Noticed his name on Rust's 1922 personnel.
