Thou Swell is a gem.
....Noel Coward once jealously said of Richard Rodgers, "The man positively pees melody." And Dick Rodgers kept the flow going for lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II for seventeen years after Larry Hart's death in 1943. His later melodic output was even more prolific, but the new collaboration was laden with heavy themes and political messaging that was a 180 departure from the wistful and delicate poetry of Lorenz Hart. The 1940s and 50s democratic style of Broadway musical (small "d", thank you) replaced the glamorous productions of the 20s and 30s with a preachy correction of society. The influence of Hammerstein (who was raised as a Christian) on Rodgers in contrast to Hart is probably the major reason his musical theatre took on a new direction of piety. Their shows were iconic but reflected the mood of a country with newly discovered social guilt; the audience paid a high price to enjoy Rodgers and Hammerstein's music.
Lorenz Hart's unhappy personal life of rejection and unrequited love was the template for dozens of songs that gave deeply felt meaning to Richard Rodgers' beautiful compositions ("Send For Me" 1930). His ironic phrasing and sarcastic wit were a frothy topping to silly romantic situations ("Fly Away To Ioway" 1933). Improbable love which was staged on a sophisticated backdrop of jazz ballet told of a world of gangsters, dancers, and murder ("Slaughter On 10th Ave." 1936). With Hammerstein, Rodgers never had the battles and drama he endured with Hart, but his music never again had the humor and edge that were the original identity of his work.

As others have noted this is an extraordinary collection which features many R and H gems which have been overshadowed by their major hits. As a confirmed R and H nut for most of my 85 years, I thought I knew all of their output and recorded versions. The arrangements are so vivid that we are taken back to the 1920’s and 1930’s, the golden era of popular music. And in Prozoot’s impeccable re-mastering, we hear them in all their glory. Which is not to mention the excellent graphics that are a great feature of this channel. Where did all of these high resolution photos come from?

The fans of today`s so called "music" haven`t a clue about what they are missing....
....I have to agree -- and the irony is that this beautiful music is available to everyone at the click of a mouse. But it's mostly ignored.
Poor Pat - how much ribbing did he get for singing those lyrics. Billy Munn, in an interview, said it was as well the Italian recording engineers had no idea what the lyrics meant.
....Italians are not easily flustered -- they would have just said, "Ba!"
