I believe it became the standard issue for Military side arm from shortly after its introduction in 1911, all the way up until 1985 when it saw considerable phasing out and replacement by the Beretta. Although many chose to continue carrying the tried and true 1911 and for damn good reason. It's no surprise why so many firearms manufacturers have copied the general design of this legendary pistol, right up to this very day.

Its a 1911 style pistol. no double barrels, that lower part is where the spring etc, the one on top is the barrel.
