  • Welcome to Everything Great About Vinland Saga's second half! In this video I round up every single great moment I could find throughout episodes 13-24.
    Vinland Saga follows the story of a young boy as he attempts to gain revenge for his father and this brutal journey takes him across Europe as he fights during the era of the Vikings.

      Well, mostly. Askeladd is a composite character, with his backstory based loosely on a guy called Olaf the Peacock, and personality from thee Scandenavian hero archetype, "Askeladden." And with the others, he took a fair amount of libreties as well, especially with Thorfinn. However, since, despite knowing his birthplace/hometown, roughly the year of his birth, and the names of his parents (his mom was actually named Thorrun, and his dad's name more acurately translates to Thord), we don't actually know anything about his early life, before he arrived in Greenland, so, the story takes advantage of a historic blind spot. However, most people can agree it was "highly unlikely" that he spent his childhood and teens as a viking, or personally knew Cnut the Great, lol (not to mention the events of the Farmland Arc. Also, he wasn't actually related to Thorkell the Tall, but Bjorn Ironsides (a different Bjorn than the one that hung with Askeladd, lol).

      FailGames FailinGamers that’s the thing, even If this wasn’t mainstream enough to gain popularity amongst the seasonal trash anime. The quality of the adaption and the source material will give it longevity compared to other seasonal anime. With how far the source material has come, and how close it is to the last arc of the narrative, this will definitely get a adaption to complete the story. That would cement this as one of the few stories that does justice to the history it was based upon.

    Make no mistake. Thorfinn definitely wanted to kill Askeladd but he wanted to do it in a duel. Killing him any other way would have taking the meaning from it. I knew the moment he joined Askeladd’s band that he was going to be robbed of his revenge. He needed to realize the futility of this pursuit and I think killing Askeladd out of a sense of vengeance would not have let him see that.

    • @anitaremenarova6662
      @anitaremenarova6662 4 года назад +3

      I honestly thought he would use the knowledge of his past against him just like Askeladd did to Thorfinn a bunch of episodes back. I didn't expect the ending but it was better than what I envisioned.

    • @AnInsideJoke
      @AnInsideJoke 4 года назад +15

      Close. He actually did realise that Askeladd was a bit like a father figure to him at times as well, but only fully realised it after he died (the later story cements this), so, those feelings combined with losing what had been his life's purpose for 11 years (honorably defeating and killing Askeladd in a duel to avenge his father Thors) ended up just completely breaking the poor boy there at the end. When you next see Thorfinn (after a small 1 year timeskip), it's just...*OUCH*. I can't really describe it any other way without spoiling.

    • @angelicambyence
      @angelicambyence 3 года назад +1

      I agree with the above. While Thorfinn as a child believed fill heartedly that he hated and despised Askeladd, that man still raised him. That man, for better or worse, was his whole world. So it's definitely more complicated than "I need to be the one who kills him." Though it's that too.

    • @anitaremenarova6662
      @anitaremenarova6662 4 года назад +1

      A lot of people tend to think he was a "father figure" to him which is ultimately not true. Sure, Askeladd sometimes tried but it always went right over his head. Beating Askeladd in a duel was Thorfinn's sole purpose in life, it was what he lived for. When that was taken from him he was understandingly devastated but that doesn't mean he ever gave a shit about Askeladd as a person.

    • @AnInsideJoke
      @AnInsideJoke 4 года назад +3

      @@anitaremenarova6662 That's actually wrong, he did come to care about Askeladd as a person, and at the least, a kind of mentor, if not outright father figure. The manga, especially after the prolouge, makes it a bit more clear. In the next arc, in fact, Thorfinn outright says that he "no longer hates him," and there are some other, more spoiler-ish things which highlight this as well.

    I think a big point was missed here, and that was that Thorfinn didn't really want to kill Askeladd. He was angry at the world, but he wasn't angry at him, he never really wanted to kill him. And that is why he never could.
    Askeladd told Thorfinn pretty much the same thing, that if he really wanted him dead, he would have simply killed him in his sleep. But Thorfinn wanted to be better than Askeladd. And the final moments were showing that Thorfinn, in some ways, had always been a better person than Askeladd, but a weaker man.

      He definitely wanted to kill him, it's just that he didn't want to stoop down to his level. He wanted to kill him but also stay morally right which he twisted so much with how many lives he has taken it means nothing now. In the end the real reason he could never beat him in a duel is that he would always lose track of everything he has learned with how much the thirst for blood would overwhelm him. In other fights he could always win because the people meant nothing to him.

    • @angelicambyence

      I think he unconsciously didn't want to kill him, but more because killing him was his whole world. He was running away from living a life and facing the reality of his actions and the loss of his father and innocence. He didn't want to face it. As long as Askeladd was alive, he could hide in his obsession with revenge.
      Askeladd giving his life away was also giving Thorfinn his life back.
      I like to think that Askeladd adopted both Thorfinn and Canute, and have them both final gifts.

    As for win 211 i think he sort of is racing to protect his father. Thorkell sees killing Askelad as the only way to make up for his father's death and let him rest in peace. If someone else kills him Thorkell will not be able to accomplish his goal. There will also be no point to literally everything Thorkell has done since his father's death if Askelad dies by someone else's hand.

    I finished the anime and caught up to the manga weeks ago but I couldn't get enough and missed it so started watching ut vids.
    ayo man thanks these two parts were so good in terms of experiencing almost everything again and enjoying feeling the same for most of the parts
    like 20:03 SAME SAME
    like I don't really like seeing characters KILL a lot but like askeladd and thorkell AND Thorfinn are just such weirdly interesting characters that like... you want them to get along, live and do whatever they do
    but ofc hehe... still the story alone is great and adding the whole amazing animation n sounds ooof
    26:30 This scene hit so different if u read the manga to ongoing chapter maaaan

    From what I experienced thus far, being a "true Warrior", who doesn't need a sword, Thorfinn's Father being one of them, means realizing that everyone on the battlefield is a living person with a family they want to return to. The ones with power and greed never set foot on a battlefield but send out people whose faces they don't even know. Being a true warrior means hating to kill, valuing the life of comrades and enemies alike. That's, too, why his father told Thorfinn, he "doesn't have any enemies"

    To be honest I don't think Canute is the "rightful" king seeing as he is the youngest of the 2 brothers and has less recognition than his older brother but maybe it's done differently in that culture. Love your videos!!!

      I wouldn't say best in anime. For his time period and culture though, he was absolutely best dad, since half the time dudes didn't even always know how many kids they even HAD half the time, much less being involved much in their lives. Meanwhile, here's Askeladd adopting a kid who keeps trying to knife him, and he tries to actively teach him stuff throughout his life.
