you dont get 6E on ddr4 mobos, ASR does. You get 6 usb lastest gen 3 ports, all other mobos give 2 and more of the standard ports with lower quality rating/shielding. so more higher quality ports. Higher quality m2 options, but fewer. im only mentioning this, becuase ive been trying to find out why no one considers ASROCK a good deal vs MSI, at the DDR4 usages. Even if you want more power banks, wouldnt the ASROCK be the best overall for general usages ? ASR Extreme DDR4 vs MSI Edge DDR4 ???

In defense of the Extreme and steel legend; With a triple slot GPU you still get access to 2 16x slots and 1 1x slot with the extreme and 2 1x slots with the steel legend for a total of 3 or 4 expansion slots. With the MSI board you kept referencing you only get 2 expansion slots with a triple slot GPU.
I had an Asus Z87 Pro board which is from 2013, had a feature set of today's $400+ boards (minus the M.2, of course) and I paid 140€ for it. WTF happened with this industry?
The phantom gaming would make sense if it had been released with some sort of 12400f budget gaming chip. Put a 150 dollar low TDP part out for it and someone can get a lot of features on a budget. Nothing else in this product list makes any sense to me. Asrock has typically managed to have several boards that were the least expensive option for whatever combination of parts or features. E.g. cheapest board with 8 sata ports or whatever. You sacrificed the vrm and the bios but you got something in return. I don't see any of that here. They've traded their features for better vrms. Only the better vrms still aren't competitive. And then you see the prices and theyre realllllly not competitive. Either they have shipped a pitifully small number of boards and are milking every penny out of them or these prices get slashed asap
The lack of ITX options will push people towards the ASrock b660 itx motherboard which is horrible. I've been looking all over for decent priced DDR4 ITX boards and there's nowhere to run to, they're all either mega expensive, DDR5 or have crappy VRMs. All i wanted was to make a reasonably priced ITX 12600k build that won't kill itself from cooked VRMs.
I currently have an ASUS H610M-A with an outdated BIOS, which still gives me undervolt usage on my 12600K BUT I bought a Gen4 SSD which doesn't run at full speed on my H610. When researching cards, I'm between this Asrock Z690 (155 usd), MSI Pro B660m A Wifi (132 usd) and ASUS H770 Plus D4 (155 usd). that many reports on the internet say that it comes factory set with voltage above normal and that the undervolt in it is kind of complicated. I'm wondering if I really leave my H610 just because of the SSD... And there's still the VRM issue... Even the Z690 PG4 using DrMOS I don't know to what extent it's a better VRM than the H770 Plus D4 or the MSI Pro B660m A.
In defense of the z690 extreme wifi, there's headers for another 4 USB2 ports and 4 USB3 ports on the MB, so you can easily get more USB on the unused PCI slot above the GPU.
What do you think about the ASRock Z790 PG Lightning/D4 for a new "budget" DDR4-build with a core i5-13600K? Are the Z790 (DDR4) ASRock boards any better than the Z690 ones?
G'day Buildzoid, Down here in Sydney the ASROCK Z690 Steel Legend DDR4 $479AUD, ASRock Z690 Extreme WIFI 6E DDR4 is $509AUD with no Taichi or DDR5 Available, while your comparisons... MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR4 is $399AUD, MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR5 is $419, MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 is $479
Watching him roast your mobo right after i built with it is a lil rough ngl. It was the only lga 1700 ddr4 mini itx board my vendor had below €300. I have the Asrock Z690M-ITX with a 12600k that usually sits at 30-40% usage at most. Would it be worth the hassle to try and return it and get a Gigabyte B660I AORUS PRO or something?
I think I've been watching your channel too long. I looked at AsRock's mobo line when they first came out and I had the same reactions for the most part. Why they couldn't launch just one board like the MSI Carbon Z690 just doesn't make sense. The Taichi line especially continues it's slide down in aesthetics and functionaliy, and rise up in price.
why do you need so many USB ports on your boards? what do you plug into them? At most I am thinking 5-6 devices, kb, mouse, USB stick, Video Cam, USB mic and a BT dongle?
Thanks for the great video. I'm still deciding on which MB to pair with the i7 12700k I got before Christmas. I couldn't pass up the $299.99 price at Micro Center. Asrock is now ruled out. MSI is looking like the front runner. Is the Z690 Tomahawk worth the extra money over the Pro-A?
Number one thing that irks me about my x470 Taichi is the lack of a single USB 2.0 port. Ik I can slip USB 3.0 drivers into Win 7 installations but adding a single 2.0 is just nice from a troubleshooting perspective.
the chipset fan on my x570 (asrock pro4) board spins all the time, but it's a micro-ITX board so maybe it's just locked on via BIOS or something. also, it seems to have a +1 VRM for an iGPU, but it's an AM4 motherboard? is this just a leftover from the intel version? or built for the tiny handful of ryzen processors with an iGPU lol?
AM4 platform is a different thing altogether than Intel. For VRM , it is only Core + SOC . There is no dedicated VRM for the iGPU alone like Intel platform. The SOC is powering the iGPU if you are running on an APU with iGPU. Those AM4 CPU that doesn't have iGPU still need the SOC as it hosts the memory controller, I/O and Infinity Fabric. I run an X570 Aorus Master, the chipset fan does run if I do not turn on the air-cond in my room, though I live in a hot tropical climate country.

According to the spec sheet at 4:00, The Taichi has 2+1+2+8+1=14 USB capable connectors in total. Sure, many of those goes to the chassi and two are on a riser, but that'd be more than enough for me.
@@pokeguy742 6 Type-A + 2 Type-C (that can be trivially converted if need be), plus an included rear bracket for 2 Type-A at the back (not visible in the rear-io image), gives 10 rear USB-ports _out of the box_. They seem to have allocated four port for front-IO, which surely you could move to the rear also with a bit of effort/money for another rear bracket if you absolutely felt the need. I think you could make an argument that the allocation isn't perfect, but the total count seems fine to me.

MSI seems to be overpriced but hey, you like what you like but being that I purchased the Z690 Extreme in March for $140 US and needed to do a couple BIOS updates since but all is great with my 14th Gen non-gaming PC.
Why all the motherboard lately so expensive (amd and intel)? In the Z97 or z170 era there were some really high end motherboards for 150-250. Now 200 is the starting point.
paid 110€ for a b450 ITX (yes, ITX) that has 6 usb, wifi, an HDMI AND a DysplayPort, AND the best experience in memory OC i had on b450, only beaten by it's b550 successor the motherboard mentioned are both from MSI

so you know nothing about which ethernet is stable from the one had issue ? which one had better sound card? which one had lower latency? which bios updated frequently ? so there is no point don't talk about motherboard with an old mindset, you need to update your index.
Z690 is ridiculous. We should wait for amd b650 or intel b660 for sure... Both intel z 90 something or amd 70 something are overpriced. "USB Port shortage." LOL.... I hope AMD will really nail it this time with a ridiculous amount of pcie lanes and performance so we get all the usb ports, all the performance for like 12700k price and better performance+ports/money... AMD needs to do that to really win in this decade... Otherwise Intel will win the decade again... I did not buy an intel 12th gen system cause I'm waiting for AMD to release their zen 4 systems. so they upsold the snot out of you, unless your edditing/doing pro work or playing games, that 12700k is a real waste. same with the board, since a non-Z would have been fine for you. Shame people dont understand how to reseach their needs before buying overpriced gear, it ups the prices over the whole industry for everyone.
@@AdaaDK They probably did, however I am pleased with the performance so far.
My old Gigabyte P55AU did a great job and lasted over 12 years. If this one lasts that long I will be in my mid 80's
Many of my friends don't even own a computer. They tell me they hadn't needed on in the past 60+ years and will go their grave without one.
I remember the 1st computer I purchased. It was an Apple II with two $500 each floppy drives. Those were the days.
100 dollars per USB port on the taichi
And do not forget that that the Z690 PG Velocita has an odd PCIe layout, as the bottom two x16 slots are from the CPU (2nd x16 is at 4.0 x4 mode whereas the third x16 is at 3.0 x2 mode.
Its only like 5 dollars for an m.2 on ebay 8:31 just more reinforcement for your point.
Having use a unify I can say that having the post code on the bottom of the board is handy when you have a top mount AIO
Still loving my z490 unify but the new ones look even better and I imagine have better memory support.
Maybe I missed it but an important point to make about the Z690M-ITXax is that if all the M.2 slots are occupied, then a PCIe 4.0 GPU will only run at PCIe 4.0 x8. I bet other boards have this issue.
Good to know before I buy one and load it up
the single feature i wish EVERY motherboard vendor did was standardize the 2.5Gbs ethernet port.. i get that a lot of people are still on 1Gbs even on their home network (if present) but i get a headache every single time i need to buy a new motherboard and find the correct features i need paired with a 2.5Gbs ethernet port.. seriously. STANDARDIZE IT!
you think the pg gaming itx is good for a recent board? its curretnly $200, just need something that can handle my 13600k undervolted
Good to see you're actively trying to repair your relationship with ASRock... Meanwhile I think I need to check out your new Teespring merch :P
Buildzoid woke up and declared War on Asrock today, and I'm here for it :)
US$100 per USB-A port? GTFO.
you dont get 6E on ddr4 mobos, ASR does.
The Phantom Gaming ITX is rumored to be >$400. My disappointment is immeasurable, as someone who got a PG Z390 for $160 partly because you liked it.
usb port shortage hahahaha very well said m8 ! nice work on the vids man ty for the previews :D
You said if the PG Riptide was at a low price it would be worth it; over the MSI. So I just got the Z690 PG Riptide from Newegg for $129.99+tax free shipping. So I hope it's with it. We'll see just how bad or good it is soon enough.
Asrock site says 55A other sites are showing 12+1 50A. ***How can you verify?
Maybe ASRock thinks the graphics card bracket thing is a $100 feature.. 🙃
Buildzoid and I ARE best friends :)
Asrock Z690 Taichi - there is no System Agent setting in the BIOS?
I had an Asus Z87 Pro board which is from 2013, had a feature set of today's $400+ boards (minus the M.2, of course) and I paid 140€ for it. WTF happened with this industry?
^This
Intel overcharges for the chipsets to disguise the real price of the CPUs.
Got it-
Asrock : Crap
Gigabyte : Good
MSI : Good
Asus : Overpriced
Anybody else : Irrelevant.
gigabyte bios lul.
msi the best all around
Motherboards this time around seem to have less RGB, is the craze over?
Thankyou for this Video!
btw, Z690M PG4 has only 6 Drmos as Vcore....I'm not buying that for even stock 126K
Great video as always.
In defense of the z690 extreme wifi, there's headers for another 4 USB2 ports and 4 USB3 ports on the MB, so you can easily get more USB on the unused PCI slot above the GPU.
but I could get a similarly priced board that just has those ports from the get go.
What do you think about the ASRock Z790 PG Lightning/D4 for a new "budget" DDR4-build with a core i5-13600K? Are the Z790 (DDR4) ASRock boards any better than the Z690 ones?
G'day Buildzoid,
Down here in Sydney the ASROCK Z690 Steel Legend DDR4 $479AUD, ASRock Z690 Extreme WIFI 6E DDR4 is $509AUD with no Taichi or DDR5 Available, while your comparisons...
MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR4 is $399AUD, MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR5 is $419, MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 is $479
FYI ASrock Steel legend ddr4 cant run ram even @ ddr2800 on current (launch) bios.
The Taichi line especially continues it's slide down in aesthetics and functionaliy, and rise up in price.
excellent video as always
why do you need so many USB ports on your boards? what do you plug into them? At most I am thinking 5-6 devices, kb, mouse, USB stick, Video Cam, USB mic and a BT dongle?
What brands are the best? Seems like every brand is junk when you are looking ar reviews😢
The pg velocita is on sale rn for 140$ on new egg FYI.
hello buildzoid, is there any chance you got another youtube channle for gaming? cause you sound like pravusgaming
The previous roundup video should help you decide!
OMG this video was so goddamn funny pls make more AsRock roasting videos I beg you
Z690...
Me : " *Zee* ….. hmm, there's an Intel tax. Not worth it."
thank you once again
So Asrock Z690 Pro RS is a great mobo for i7-12700KF ?
Day 1 of requesting buildzoid to make a video about memory timings.
Number one thing that irks me about my x470 Taichi is the lack of a single USB 2.0 port. Ik I can slip USB 3.0 drivers into Win 7 installations but adding a single 2.0 is just nice from a troubleshooting perspective.
Seeing the Velocita get destroyed has me disappointed but I can't disagree with you.
BZ : Talk about something bad about stupid thing that Asrock did.
Asrock be like : "That's another one for Banned List Bingo!
did you see that taichi comme with two extra USB extension port to cable link to put under or over GPU, thats not a complete disaster
the chipset fan on my x570 (asrock pro4) board spins all the time, but it's a micro-ITX board so maybe it's just locked on via BIOS or something. also, it seems to have a +1 VRM for an iGPU, but it's an AM4 motherboard? is this just a leftover from the intel version? or built for the tiny handful of ryzen processors with an iGPU lol?
AM4 platform is a different thing altogether than Intel. For VRM , it is only Core + SOC . There is no dedicated VRM for the iGPU alone like Intel platform. The SOC is powering the iGPU if you are running on an APU with iGPU. Those AM4 CPU that doesn't have iGPU still need the SOC as it hosts the memory controller, I/O and Infinity Fabric. I run an X570 Aorus Master, the chipset fan does run if I do not turn on the air-cond in my room, though I live in a hot tropical climate country.
Which z690 board does he recommend?
Also what is extreme about the Extreme board.
I was looking forward to their z690 lineup because they usually do cool stuffs and it’s a very good chance to show off. I just don’t get it that how they managed to mess it up so terribly.
Have you ever owned one installed in a rig? Their top of the line just broke all records for Z690. ASRock boards will do what they say they do. Jay did a vid. on how none of the Z690's come up to their ram specs. The Assrocks will.
Z690 Extreme is 13+1+1, using RAA229131 and ISL99360. steel legend seems to have 6+1+2 with 2 Sic654 per Vcore phase... and they claim both of their Z690 board is 13 phase. Asrock makes Biostar look professional
I think asrock heard you? added 4 more usb ports to the z790 taichi rear io and $80 cheaper. how about that purple graffiti board?
lmao this made my day. Honestly I expected asrock to do better after that awesome X570 taichi which i couldn't get and 5700XT taichi which i have rn. I am still searching for an x570 taichi :(
Buildzoid. Do a MSI DDR5 budget boards. Would like to see if XMP above 6000 work on MSI boards?
Honestly, the steel legend is not a bad board. The only D4 board that supports crossfire. ASRock 2nd PCIE supports 4.0x4 speed instead of PCIE 3.0 from msi. But someone needs to look beyond the rear io ports to notice lol.😎
MSI board does support AMD Crossfire
The engineer guys brain who design these mobo must be as thicc asrock.
*no pun intended
So if you were to get a DDR5 motherboard with PCIe 5 SSD capability, which would you get for a budget of no more than $850?
For next gen gaming and overclocking
What affordable (somewhere in 250 usd range) motherboard would You recommend for i5-12600k or i7-12700k with a PS/2 port?
When is the projected release for the next AMD motherboards and CPUs?
Real world criteria for real world use. Best round up for Z690.
But guys, is not possible add some heatsink on the z690m-itx/ax?
I wish the z690m itx wasn’t the only ddr4 itx for lag 1700. Only other a board with ddr4 is the Aorus elite but it has WHEA and pcie gen problems. Also Asrock disabled XTU on new bios
Also, where OC formula?
So best Z690 mobos MSI currently?
I feel that with the i5s low power consumption the Phantom boards seem like a good value.
AS(s)Rock - It's in the name. They know exactly what they are doing! ;)
Listened to "Buildzoid" for about 1 minute and realized he's whacked.
According to the spec sheet at 4:00, The Taichi has 2+1+2+8+1=14 USB capable connectors in total. Sure, many of those goes to the chassi and two are on a riser, but that'd be more than enough for me.
It even comes with a USB PCI bracket in the box!
Weird, I only count 6 on the back.
I gues they use pcie 5 to get get 2 times 8x pcie 5 (one for gpu and one for nvme) = 2 times 16x pcie 4 speeds?
pro tip: middle mouse click opens in new tab ;)
That one motherboard company i always avoided
You know that they don't actually steal PCIe lanes for that x4 NVMe right? If you look at the Ark page for like say the 12900k
PCI Express Configurations ‡ Up to 1x16+4, 2x8+4
Notice the +4 its 16 for GPU and 4 additional for the NVMe
the +4 from the CPU is PCI-e 4.0. Any mobo with a PCI-e 5.0 M.2 slot is stealing GPU lanes.
lack of usb plugs on back panel often seems to happen on intel boards.
ASRock, you know you have serious issues when Biostar motherboards start to seem attractive.
no matter how good and cheap msi is, i will never ever get another msi board. back in the day, i got a board running the 16x pcie at 4x, not matter what. bios update didnt change anything, bios setting neighter. set it to 16 - shows 16, save an reset, back to 4x. send it rma, came back, is functional. send them screenshots, get standard answers. took 6 weeks to finaly get a replacment. ye it know, other brand can and do have similar problems, but its my experience
Looking at this "REVIEW" of ASROCK boards I think it is more in line with, "MY BITCHES ABOUT ASROCK" video.
I always skip the first 5 min on every videos because I love to plug both my 8pins and I dont feel bad anymore. Psychological damage is gone.
how would i easily find out if a z690 board is t-top or daisy?!
I'm on a sub-$100 b450 board with as much USB A as the z690 taichi
paid 110€ for a b450 ITX (yes, ITX) that has 6 usb, wifi, an HDMI AND a DysplayPort, AND the best experience in memory OC i had on b450, only beaten by it's b550 successor the motherboard mentioned are both from MSI
All I can say about it is that I'm not buying any more peace meal over priced motherboards. EVER.
That's why I subscribe to this channel so that Motherboard Manufacturer Malfeasance never happens to me.
The father in heaven created Buildzoid to save me from having to do my own actual hardcore overclocking.
It is my will that if I am dead he is to receive all my computer stuff.
aCKtchUHallY.... The Taichi has two more USB ports, as it comes with a internal to external slotcover. Probably someone at AsRock watches your videos and agreed, that 6 type-A ports is a bit measely for a 600$ board.
Should be a meme, "put a Delta on it":)
Can't wait for the nzxt boards to be released at even higher prices and people arguing about how they are the best boards on the market.
Lmao
so you know nothing about which ethernet is stable from the one had issue ? which one had better sound card? which one had lower latency? which bios updated frequently ? so there is no point don't talk about motherboard with an old mindset, you need to update your index.
What about pairing Phantom Gaming 4 with 13600kf and undervolting?
Z690 is ridiculous. We should wait for amd b650 or intel b660 for sure... Both intel z 90 something or amd 70 something are overpriced. "USB Port shortage." LOL.... I hope AMD will really nail it this time with a ridiculous amount of pcie lanes and performance so we get all the usb ports, all the performance for like 12700k price and better performance+ports/money... AMD needs to do that to really win in this decade... Otherwise Intel will win the decade again... I did not buy an intel 12th gen system cause I'm waiting for AMD to release their zen 4 systems. But I'm from Turkey and since intel released 12th gen cpu's which has been not too long, TRY has lost 15% value... Which sucks. Freaking world man...
