      Nearly 20% of Americans speak Spanish as their native language though? The US doesn't have any official national language on any federal level, even though English is widely used.

      @@nomoretwitterhandles when did he mention national language? He is saying his native language lol.

    • @nomoretwitterhandles
      @nomoretwitterhandles 2 года назад +2

      @@rampage__ They literally implied that the native language for Americans ("we") is English ("our native language"). It is not OUR native language.
      If they were, for whatever reason, talking about speaking Japanese (last part of the video), then their comment would make more sense, as the native and national language for people in Japan is Japanese.
      Maybe you should study more English, if you're having such a hard time understanding these things. There are fun lessons about "implications" and "inferencing" (both are similar but different; either help a lot with finding context clues).
      Now, whether or not they meant to imply "English is the national and native language for Americans", their phrasing is still poor. This is why pointing out the flaws in their comments is important. I'm sure they meant to say something like, "Wait, so we're geniuses for speaking our most commonly spoken language?" or whatever else is similar. It's a little change, but it makes all the difference. Grammar matters.

      I'm almost 32 years old and I do not need live advice thank you very much.
      Look, I have a big interest in languages and I have two friends that just happen to have a degree in english literature. Think whatever you want, but you're just categorically wrong, and no expert in the English language would even think of putting it in the romance family.
      I feel like I'm speaking to a wall here: you're saying you haven't been interested enough to even make a choice in this supposed debate.
      Como ni tengo diplomas ni cuentas online ligadas a mis estudios, te estoy escribiendo este otro párrafo en castellano, mi lengua materna, a ver si vas viendo que realmente sí hablo más de un idioma, sin cometer faltas de ortografía ni gramática. A lo mejor así te queda un poco más claro que esto sí es una lengua romance, no como el inglés.
      També podria repetir-te la mateixa diàtriba en català, però em sembla més adient escriure un pàrraf completament diferent per que te n'adonis que no m'estic fent un farol. El català també es una llengua romànica, per cert, però és molt possible que segons tu hi hagi un debat on algú defensa que el català és en realitat un derivat el mongol o alguna cosa així. Com deia en Joan Sanz: vés a prendre un got de llet ben calentona, que demà m'afaitaràs.

      @Gangari TheWanderer I am self-tought. I quit education at 18
      My mother studied 40 years ago, so not modern, specially in Spain where education is on a downward spiral
      Literature includes basic linguistics of said language
      History includes languages spoken in the past and how they evolved through time, as to understand the culture of each era
      I haven't yelled, I am not angry, I just feel like talking to a flat-earther and it's quite tiring
      Your "token of peace" expression just makes you look like you "bestow upon me the chance of good terms" like a king or something. That's 中二病 levels of cringe
      If you haven't studied (academically or not) about the subject, you have no word in the argument to begin with
      If you don't think the current education system is good, why do you expect me to have studied linguistics (and prove it to you somehow, apparently) for my point to have validity? Hypocrite much?
      I just lost like half of my brain cells with this "argument", I'm just tired. Just leave me alone, go research about the origins of English, talk to an expert about it and learn something. Oh, right, modern western education is bad, so an expert wouldn't suffice by your standards, right? Better look it up online in some random webpage... Oh, no, you said Wikipedia wasn't reliable. Then you must go to better websites, like a university! Oh, no, modern education is bad, and universities are modern education. So what's the plan? Going to some forum with a thousand users that you know literally nothing about?
      Seriously, make up your mind, and learn your stuff before trying to teach others about it. I do know my stuff, that's the sole reason I replied to begin with

By ethnicity I'm Chinese (but born in UK) and I was with my other classmates who were from Singapore and we were speaking English on the train, and then a couple of Japanese students were gossiping behind our back at how we were 'showing off' hahaha.

    Ken's way to show his elite-ness does make sense, since English is a hard language to learn in Japan, therefore by speaking English not only it makes him feel above the rest and his people acknowledge it too, which only solidify his flex even further.
    my suggestion for the 1st question's answer: "Ganbarimasu !!, I'll do my best to repopulate Japan !"...also don't worry about accent, I mean do you really hate that foreigner who speak Japanese with English accent?
    4:38 that "how can I say" inspires me to make this ... "he dude, don't get too koki", and "dam a ray...cashew"
    also Sora, have you tried programming?, if you think computer will rule the world, then why not become the ruler ? the job demand in Japan is huge, look at those Vtubers, they just don't simply appear out of nowhere, ....you can speak English and know how to play a guitar....programming is typing in mostly English to a CPU

      Oh god no.
      Ask them anything in another language than french and you always get _"je ne comprends pas"._ as a reply.
      Unlike us over here in Flanders they aren't forced to learn the other national languages.
      They get to choose between either
      1) Dutch.
      2) English.
      But most of them choose english because ,like one wallon put it in a local news program, _"Dutch is a barbarian language"._
      But they don't even bother to learn that properly because every wallon (or citizen of brussels) i meet at work that asks me a question about something, and if i answer back in english they are unable to comprehend what i'm saying.
      Of Course you have the outlier that actually CAN speak dutch or english but those are far and between.
      And before you ask _"why don't you speak in french to them?"_ ,i simply refuse to speak to them in french.
      They come to flanders, they can do the basic efford to learn/speak flemmish.
      Like we do when we go to Wallonia/Brussels.

    Thank you, Sora. It's been a long time since I've laughed so much. I think English must be rather difficult for non-native speakers. It's a Germanic language which has been shoehorned into Latin grammar, and is strongly influenced by Latin and Greek. But it's not a Romance language. Its spelling is quite irregular, particularly in relation to vowel sounds, without even diacritical marks to help out. It has loan words from many other languages, which has greatly expanded its vocabulary.
    Japanese, OTOH, is really hard for us, especially the written language, partly because it is based on syllables rather than letters. How do you manage hiragana, katakana, kanji, and romaji? Obviously, it must the Japanese who are geniuses, while we Americans are usually too lazy to learn even another European language.

    • @sakamotosan1887
      @sakamotosan1887 2 года назад +2

      English grammar is not based on Latin, it is Germanic at its core. It has many Latin based words, as well as words of French origin, which is a Romance language, further increasing the number of Latin originating words. It's like how Japanese has many words of Chinese origin, but its grammar is still Japanese at its core.
      Romaji is not Japanese. It's just a romanization and its only value to the student of the language is to learn the kana, which is the easiest part of learning the language. Grammar is typically the hard part, a new script is generally not the hard part of any language. Kanji throws a monkey wrench into the works a bit, but even then, it can be useful and aid in understanding new words when you get to know many characters. Romaji bad.

    I've seen examples of the converse, in America, they pronounce the Greek alphabet wrong in Mathematics Departments, so they'll correct you for not using the wrong pronunciation, even if you are actually Greek.

    Don't worry, here in the UK, being able to read Japanese also makes you a 'genius'.
    Same goes for any other language which uses anything other than the roman alphabet. It's inconceivable to most of us that anyone could possibly understand letters that look different to the ones that we use...
    Whenever I read some kana for anyone, you would think I'd just translated ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics or something. This is despite the fact that my reading comprehension is probably about as good as the average 5 year old Japanese kid...

    I never really realized how difficult english is because its my native language, but there are actually a lot of very strange rules for speaking english. We don't really even consciously know some of these rules, they're just drilled into us by habit. Of course, there are also sounds we use that cannot be represented in katakana, and loanwords tend to be approximations. That said, the kanji that japanese people know also seem very impressive from an english perspective.
