- Toccata and Fugue - Patrick Gowers
This was played at a family christening in King's College Chapel exactly a month after the composer's 75th birthday by one of his grandsons, Richard Gowers, as a surprise present.
To explain: the camcorder did record sound, but instead the sound comes from a higher quality CD recording taken from the main body of the chapel, so the sound of talking comes from tourists in the chapel, not up in the organ loft. The CD recording started just after the first note, so the first two notes of the video use the sound from the camcorder. Simple.
I realise that my mouth is open during most of the performance, but I expect that if I hadn't kept it open, I might have forgotten to breathe. Organ playing isn't a renowned spectator sport.

Well played Sir!! This lad's Grandfather is in my mind one of the finest British Composers ever. We watch a lot of the re-runs of Sherlock Holmes with mum who sadly has alkzimers so there are a lot of repeats but she loves the music as I his music and although I have seen the series many times now!! I never tire of Patrick's Music for I find it wonderful, very different and extreamly beautiful, sometimes powerful but overall very very moving. Many thanks to you all and to Grandad. Peter
Metaphorically almost had to pull the car over on my drive home from work yesterday, when this piece was performed on Evensong yesterday (Hereford Cathedral). It's a ball busting sensation! Listening again this morning, while bread making. Will explore more of his music. Thank you for your virtuosic performance.
That's what brought me here, too. The same thing happened with the broadcast from Salisbury Cathedral (Wed 2 and Sun 6 Dec 2020), with Dupre's Symphonie-Passion (Le monde dans l'attente du Sauveur). It is fortunate that I wasn't driving a car on either occasion (especially as I don't know how to drive).
Really amazing- Did your grandfather proud! I really feel that next to Jeremey Brett, Gowers was the star of the SH series. Really amazing music and SO underrated! Long Live Patrick Gowers!
Excellent composition! As good as any of the celebrated organ composers of the 20th century.
Good Lord that's fiendish...and looks impossible to play, but I LOVE it dearly! So dark and deep...
Amazing performance and amzing piece. Superb
One of my favourite pieces of organ music - brilliantly played. Thank you for posting this, it is a monumental piece which took me the best part of a year to learn! Well worth it!
Thank you very much.
Hi Adrian
Remember you as a boy at St. Peters' Collegiate Wolverhampton in the 70's!
Hope all well with you. Perhaps catch up after lockdown.

Superb rendering of a fabulous piece
Love this magnifent piece by Patrick Gower's played so perfectly by Richard Gowers! More power to both young geniuses!
Fabulous playing, Richard,BRAVO ! and a wonderful piece too. Whatismore,(near Enfield),you are a VERY funny man. Every success.
It's a lot of fun to watch you play- really cool piece !!
What a wonderful discovery--and so well played by a young artist--thank you.
Great family effort too
Bravo! I had heard (but never watched) the Toccata being played before. Ashamed to say I didn't even realise there was a fugue. It's a shame about the wiped bit of video, but the sound more than makes up for it.
No need to feel ashamed; the fugue was added 16 years later.
Very beautifull!
Super Bravo!!!
Mr gowers be vibing
Is he who writes 221B baker street?
I've always enjoyed the theme that Mr. Gowers wrote for the Sherlock Holmes franchise and looked at IMDB for other film or television credits, there was not as much as I would have expected. Just now I started exploring RUclips to see what else he has composed and found this very impressive work, well played Richard Gowers ! I hope to find more but perhaps someone could let me know where and what to look for please ?
Try here for a recent recording, simply amazing ruclips.net/video/yLa-1ONtXC0/видео.html
