    women stopped wearing a corset mainly because of the mockery of men and the fake news they created about the corset
    that also happened with Crinoline, bonnets and hat holding spikes

    Oh yay, another video! For my conculture, village leaders each have a really special corset passed down generations that sort of cements their claim to the throne (my culture is matrilineal) and are worn as undergarments with a tight velvet onto so the corset is more visible. The working class has sort of adapted these into bust support that uses wide shoulder strap rather than hip support. this video was really great because it gave me a lot of things to think about (I honestly haven't thought that much about shilloutes (spelling is fun).
    Edit: spelling!!

      Interesting! In the 18th century it was more common for working class women's stays to be strapless and rely more on the hips for support, so I'm curious how that change might factor in. Wide racetrack straps have always been a favorite of mine for support since they don't hurt my shoulders as much, I think that's something I'd like to explore further, myself!

    Looking at modern naming things, it’s entirely possible that “corsetto” or even corset was a name a designer made up for his/her stays design, which then just fell into the common name. Like how modern designers have a specific name for like…. Pants. And some people call the pants by their names rather than their specific cut

    A lot of the corset benefits I also find with wearing binders; they're more breathing restrictive but it's sort of the same idea, as I find my posture straightening with wear and like beyond the dysphoria crushing thing they're pretty comfortable and protective. I'd say something similar might work in a fantasy setting also (minus the rib shattering lol)

    Pretty much all of my fantasy peoples have some sort of bust support garmets, though not necesarily corsets. In my main setting I wound up in rather weird situation because I had already done character designs for characters and then tried to come up with undergarments that were appropriate, and a LOT of different things wound up being selected. I tried to figure out how to justify this, and ultimately concluded that the people there as a whole have a wide variety of tastes, possibly because there's a fairly high amount of cultural exchange in some areas, and different species have have differing beauty standards. Some ladies wear a lot of crop tops, so I wound up going with 1920s-esque bras for, while a lot of other people wound up with Edwardian or late Victorian type corsets, while the elves (and pretty much just the elves) have largely gone with more Regency-like styles combined with 'sports corsets,' and 1920s bra type things, and a lot of the trolls favor simpler kirtle-type bodices, chest wraps or harnesses - though some (especially those who trade with other peoples more) have adopted other styles as well. Busked undergarments are also popular with the flying races (at least if they're going to be flying a while) as they make it easier to keep their torsos strait while flying.
    Meanwhile that same setting several hundred years ago (one storyline I have takes place waaaay before the others) most people went with form fitting kirtles, sometimes with chest wraps, except the goblins and trolls. At that point the trolls hadn't really adopted kirtle-type bodices, and the goblins were...well, some of them where using harnesses like ye olde Greeks, some were using chest wraps, but most of them were running around without any bust support (or clothes at all in some cases.) Varied depending on how much contact that particular tribe had with non-goblins. The flying races also had to make sure their breathing wasn't restricted since flying requires a lot of oxygen and is basically the equivalent of endurance running, and some used outwear to try and hold their clothes close to the chest so the neckline wasn't loose anough for people to potentially look down their shirts.

    I have a question. I'm creating a race like yours (with wings and bird like features) and I wanna know if you think that adding a kind of corset would be a good idea. I was thinking about a corset for hips and waist (not boobs 'cause lots of sport=not a lot of fat) which would occasionaly be worn by wealthier people to support their back. What do you think, I'm really not an expert and I think I'd need advices 😅😁

    Those children's stays are so cute! I made myself a pair of stays out of cardboard, cereal boxes, and masking tape when I was 4 or 5 (homeschooled and was learning about the French revolution 😅), I think I also had panniers made from 2L bottles. I liked to make outfits out of all the plastic bags from when we did our once a month family shop in the late 90s and early 00s, so I made foofy ballgowns for my little sister and I.
    Odd tangent but now I'm thinking of feed sack dresses and what other unusual sources of material for clothing could your fantasy culture use? So many possibilities like a late victorian ventilated corset but instead of being made with twill tape and cotton net it is made with leather and exceptionally fine (chain) mail - if it was gold and made fine enough it would have a purple hue to it 😍 such a cool idea! #inspired

    i have a question. in my story world the good guys wear corsets as armor. the corsets are made of leather but i'm debating having a different material a stiff fabric corset with wood boning as a substitute for archers or people who need to move more they have needles made of a metal they have access to but they don't have access to machines so the fabric they make has to be woven by hand. but would leather allow freedom of movement for someone like an archer who needs to shoot a bow really quick during combat. i don't have much experience with leather so ya could archers wear protective leather armour that still allows freedom of movement

  • @naolucillerandom5280
    @naolucillerandom5280 2 года назад

    Not to blame you, but I had to make up a new type of metal so the armors of a brand of my warriors against monsters could be heavily inspired in multilayered dresses that include stays and corsets, and they look beautiful but also my wrist hurts from drawing.
    - I came back to the video again because I need something for my shape shifting dragon ladies. The Greek harness seems to be the best option, they can keep it on their waist as a belt when they don't need it.

    I think Biology would also play a part in whether a race/species would wear a corset, I don't know though as I don't know much(read anything) about them myself, only major question is would a winged race(think a Garuda) be able to wear one? I want to say no because wings getting in the way, but as stated, I know next to nothing about corsets.

    Also you can totally exercise in a corset someone went mountain climbing in a historical replica, and archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric women did engage in hunting, but probably not if they were pregnant or nursing yknow
    Also during wwii when all the women had to do the men’s jobs and metal was rationed a group of women in England fought parliament on an exemption for their corsets bc they required them for back support during their factory work

I just feel like it's more of a history lecture than a worldbuilding video, but that's just an opinion. I do respect how much research and effort you put into though! • @ascendedalchemist2551

    I have something to say about the seaweed dyes of the nauticans. The red colors would actually fade away very quickly because the red pigment of seaweed, that they use is light sensitive. It would also be needlesly hard to get the red dyes because red seaweed gets more common, the deeper down you go. Also I have a question. Their seasilk is naturally yellowish. So does that mean that they can create green tones by only partially bleaching the seasilk and then adding some blue mollusk dye?

    • @ascendedalchemist2551
      @ascendedalchemist2551 3 года назад

      The light sensitivity also counts for yellow seaweed dyes because they are about half red pigment. So they will eventually turn into a very bleached out green.

Yeah, unless some aspects of your people's culture and/or biology is involved, bust support is not a priority, but still, we've seen examples of form-shaping fashion for men in our world in this same video. It could be interesting, it's worldbuilding, let's break out from our society's preconceptions, fuck gender roles.
