Once I was talking with some people that I had recently met and we started talking about our cars. I showed them a picture of mine and they asked me if my car is from 2005, when I told them it's from 1997 they were disappointed.

Actually I was planing to finish my other car (which is actually my dream car), drive it and in the mean time fix all issues on my Passat. Well, that did not happen, my other car is still not roadworthy.
I still drive that same royal-green -97 but with a non turbo 1.8 ADR engine. Bought it as my first car in -08 for 4K € and now it has 290,000 on the dash. The pearl metallic color is just awesome, but the lacquer finish is peeling off badly from the engine hood. Basic maintenance has kept it running and never left me on the road. -28C weather, no preheat - no problems, starts on the first key turn every single time. Except the casual services (brakes, timing belt etc) I have changed a broken AC-blower (100€), broken power-window regulator (50€) and an airbag crash-sensor (50€). Once the Airbag controlling module was so jammed I couldn´t reset the fault codes. Local dealer said its 700€ a new module plus labor costs about the same. The fix was to send it to a small shop where they re-wrote the program inside the module, for 150€. I need a bigger car soon, going to miss this one that´s sure.
2.0 TDI = Head cracks after 5 years and 150.000km 1.9TDI = Fires right up after more than 20 years, 300.000km with bad glow plugs in winter. One of the best engines ever made. Nice car. Early 1996 model with green dashboard light. In 1997 they switched from green to blue light. Heated seats, climatronic, sports steering wheel. Some pretty nice features when this car was new.
A 1997 Trendline model with the green instrument lighting and analog clock. It has the rare factory navigation system. A full MFA display in the cluster + navigation controls in the center console under the radio. You can see it still has the original GPS antenna on the roof too.
New rear boot, fix some rust, fix up the interior and you are done for a period. Later up you can give the engine a bit of love. Especially now getting close to christmas😉
Actually the engine, exhaust and brakes need the work rightaway as in the country this is filmed, you can't legally drive a car without mandatory MOT. But yeah, in capable hands, this car can totally be a decent daily still.

We in the netherlands have a lot of rules of what should be in a good condition to pass the apk (dutch MOT) and getting registered.
@@arthur850_ Yup. Europe is similar in the rules i think. This car lives in Estonia, where you'll pass MOT only with minor surface rust and small things that don't cause driving safety issues. Things like a crack in the windshield, weepy engines, CO2 emissions or even mis-aligned headlights can all easily fail the car in MOT.
I sympathize. In my country, I need at least 800€ to buy a car like that. If you send it to the junkyard, you can get 150€ for scrap metal. I envy the very cheap junk car prices in Europe!

VW started with PD TDI engines in 1999, in this video is TDI AFN (engine code) 81kw-110hp. After 1999 replace of that AFN engine is 1.9 PD TDI 85kw-115hp, engine code AJM with 6 gears gearbox :)
I drive audi 80 B4 2.0E 85kw from 1994. And it still work perfectly. I m from Montenegro, small Balkan country. And the most people from our country drive German cars. In Bosnia Golf 2 Is like deity😀
Possible problems indicated by flashing spiral: 1) 1 or more spark plugs. 2) egr valve needs cleaning, very simple. 3) turbo, but no engine light on together with the flashing spiral, so very little probability. 4) really though... the switch under the brake pedal. When it breaks, the spiral flashes.
When you opened the door and I saw the state of the inside I said "really, you paid money for this?!" and then you put in a new battery and turned the key and I remembered why these still have some value even in such condition. I miss my TDI, but the early DSGs were junk and that engine deserved far better.

particularly this one from around that time, they are the best 1.9 tdi's ever used, may be a bit louder than some of the newer engines but these are are built far better & are pretty bullet proof & generally just keep running for 100's of thousands of miles

the 1.9 tdi is the one that is known to be bomb proof, the one with VE rotary pump like this one. The 1.9 tdi pd is a bit more prone to issues (cam wear, injectors wear), but generally they are much stronger engines (a lot more punchy).

I think it is because there is air in fuel system. Injection pump is leaking fuel.
