Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Do It Again", "Peg", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Josie", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Deacon Blues", "FM", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School", "Babylon Sisters" etc."
You forgot “Reelin in the Years,” “Black Cow,” “Bodhisattva,” “Doctor Wu,” “Bad Sneakers,” “King of the World,” “Black Friday,” “Home At Last,” and my favorite, “Green Earrings.” 😊
if this is your first Steely Dan song, you began in the right place, the beginning! Let the journey begin m brother, is a trip in SO many ways you will be blown away...I love to see the pure joy and amazement you express in your reacts!
Steely Dan has is classiest recordings in all of rock. All these lush sounds, smooth grooves… and yet the lyrics tell a very different story. Welcome to the penthouse party.
Can’t wait for you to get into Steely Dan more. Back in the 70s and 80s when people used to buy those gigantic big stereo systems, people would take their steely Dan albums to test the stereos in the shop to see which one they wanted to buy. That’s how great their recordings were. They showed off all the instruments and it was the most spectacular music to play in your headphones. And they still are to this day.
You must go on this Steely Dan journey of discovery. You will never be the same I promise. Trust me on this. So many hit songs from the 70s, that are Iconic still today.
Steely Dan have been one of my absolute bestest bands EVER!!!! Love love love them! Best memories of the best times in my life.....☮❤ Sea Point, Cape Town
I'm so excited for your Steely Dan journey. Mine began decades ago and I promise you they will always impress you. Can't imagine my amazing musical adventures without them. Many thanks to all the talented contributors to SD over the years!
I could list a lot of songs for Steely Dan but the rabbit hole is deep. You can’t go wrong. So many exceptional musicians played with them. RIP Walter Becker.
Quite possibly one of the very best debut albums of all time! Can't buy a thrill was unique and chock full of great songs. And it was just a hint of what Steely Dan would continue to offer as time went on.
SD started as a full group, and over time dwindled down to a duo that utilized a ton of top notch studio musicians. This is from the debut album, which featured three or four different singers. All the subsequent albums have Donald Fagan as the primary singer. You literally can’t miss with anything from the first seven SD albums.
I'm not sure why Two Against Nature isn't as highly regarded as their earlier work. With songs like the title track, West of Hollywood, Gaslighting Abbie, Almost Gothic, etc. it's hard not to see it's as good as anything else. Is it because TAN isn't from their classic period? Their final album, Everything Must Go, isn't anything to sneeze at either!
If you listened to every Steely Dan song ever recorded, this is the one you would say, "this is not a Steely Dan song, it doesn't sound anything like their sound." The song is one of my Favorites of theirs, it just sounds like a different Band, or artist doing it. Thanks
It's official. You are my favorite reactor channel!!! Listening/watching your reactions are priceless. Love your whole approach. I am appreciating more and more the music I grew up listening to! I commend you for the diversity of music genres! Looking forward to your next post! Love from Texas!
Steely Dan is the definition of Quality. And this album is one of the very best. (Aja will be another of their albums which will also blow your mind) Cool.
These guys were at the top of a mountain of their own. Well worth a deep deep dive as they hardly have a bad track in the locker. The core of the band were Becker and Fagen who brought in all the greats of the session world to play their compositions❤ For another jazz fusion worth a shot (this time with prog) check out Steven Wilson ‘Luminol’
This is not only a desert island record, this is a desert island band. As it's been said many times, "Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band."
Absolutely adore and love me some Steely Dan!! I remember jamming to them in my dads truck growing up. I was fortunate that he introduced me some of the greats that were before my time. Highly, highly recommended digging into their catalog. You will not be disappointed!
Steely Dan are among the gods of Rock n' Roll!!!! Steely Dan along with Chicago.....Blood Sweat & Tears and Tower of Power really pioneer excellent Jazz/R & B/Funk music and fused these genres with Rock. Another Steely Dan song that thrust the group in the spotlight was "It Again," by Steely Dan. Check it out!!!
They were perfectionists in recording and producing songs. Picked top studio musicians to provide awesome solos and accompaniment. They did not make a bad song! You will become a hardcore fan very quickly.
Steely Dan has soooooo many killer and diverse-sounding hits. You should check out: "Do It Again" and "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" and "Reelin' In the Years" and "My Old School" and "FM (No Static At All)" and "Deacon Blues."
Steely Dan has two sides to the band. The first is like this cool excellently played melodic pop with great hooks and singalong lyrics, and these way out jazzy jams that sound like they were made by mad professors but still are Steely Dan. Some of the guitar licks they get up to are unmatched, and they are always the tightest sounding band ever. Every album is different, but has that Steely Dan thing going on.
Welcome to the world of "the Dan". At least ten songs that have been played on radio stations on a regular basis for 50 years. Just incredible musician ship. The lyrics are so good. Welcome to the rabbit hole my friend. 😃😃😃👊👊👊
New bands? 😉 It's so fun to watch you discover bands that we've been listening to for decades. Brings me back to my teenage years...and they were good years.
The two members of steely Dan always picked the absolute best studio musicians for the albums. Add that to their never ending perfectionism (?) I. The producers chair and you get some of the best music of the 70’s into the 80’s. There sound evolved into much more of a jazz style but still straight up pop/rock music. You will love songs from the album Aja
And SD didn't tour for 20 years starting in the mid 70's to support there albums and still sold 40 million. You should deep dive SD YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.
I am a Dan man through and through. And I really enjoy all the other bands you’ve talked about. But they’re up there with all of those. Steely Dan is amazing! And in the beginning the bands were fairly consistent on the first couple albums. I know you saw them listed as a duo… And I guess they are. But their creativity is unmatched. What they did with the musicians they employed… Was totally to their credit… They’re amazing. Dive deep into the rabbit hole of Steely Dan in my opinion. There you go.
David Palmer sang on this one his only album with the band. Donald Fagen took over vocals on first tour because Palmer was scared to death. The rest is history. Fagen’s partner Walter Becker passed away recently. The Grammy’s finally gave them Album Of The Year in 2000-2001 for Two Against Nature. My favorite Dan song is My Old School from Countdown to Ecstasy…….
I second the recommendation to continue SD reactions chronologically. I would hit the highlights, even though Reelin’ in the Years is not a favorite of mine. It put them on the radio for the first time. Dirty Work has always been a favorite of mine, even though it isn’t considered one of their best hits.
I recommend listening to everything, but I think there's so much greatness here that jumping out of chronological order is OK. Not a challenge-just more of an observation. In my part of the world it was Do It Again that put SD on the map. It was MASSIVE!
It is not only about statistics. Steely Dan stands out! But, there are many great band that never became very famous. Add to this many one hit wonders, well forgotten today. Also, hits on one side of the Atlantic, sometimes never hit on the other side. In both directions! Due to internet, it is possible to trace all these treasures today which was impossible (or to expensive) twenty years ago and back. Just to pick a few samples from the golden days 1968-1976: "Kill me with your love" by Jericho, "Triplets" by Hansson och Karlsson (one of their fans was Jimi Hendrix), "Poor boy" by Stan Webb's Chicken Shack, "Drowned in wine" by Family (song Roger Chapman), "The ride to Agadir" by Mike Batt and the London Symphony Orchestra, "Horgalåten" by Kebnekaise, "Peel the paint" by Gentle Giants, and if you never explored Frank Zappa (or only have heard a few songs) try "RDNZL" (instrumental jazz fusion!). I have a lot more ... 😁
If you do not choose to dive headlong into the Steely Dan 🐇🕳then you are indeed missing a golden opportunity to enrich your life with the extraordinary music of the finest band ever. Of course when I say “band”, I mean a revolving roster of world class musicians and vocalists that were hand chosen by Walter Becker and Donald Fagan who were not only musical geniuses, but also perfectionists. ♥️✌🏼😎
You will want to listen to much more by them. This is a goodie but their sound is so varied you have to listen a lot to get a glimpse of what they are about. In general Steely Dan songs are slick, sophisticated, jazzy with great lyrics. My personal fav by them is called show biz kids. Their most celebrated album is Aja. For one they are mostly 2 guys surrounded by tons of session players (musicians who freelance or work for the studio and fill in parts for the recording or a tour. They are not regarded as part of the entity that is the band. Session players are always very good, have to be super versatile and able to jam and improv, and are also relatively anonymous compared to the rock stars they work for. The two guys that anchored the band are Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. They also did a lot of vocals with Michael McDonald from Doobie Brothers. Chevy Chase (SNL) played drums for the two prior to calling themselves Steely Dan. And the name comes from a description of...a sex toy.
I love Steely Dan. There's no one else like them - so unique and talented. And btw, if you don't know what derivation of the band name you need to google it. If you want to hear something different and great check out Larkin Poe. My favorite is one of their older songs called Mad as a Hatter. It's about having mental illness in your family tree. ruclips.net/video/dGEjbJkxFhs/видео.html
They had a lot of hits that got a lot of well-deserved radio play. But some of my faves, such as this, never actually charted. Another was "Midnite Cruiser." This will be a fun dive.
'Can't Buy A Thrill'.....My Absolute favourite Steely Dan album. The only other artist who I can think of who produced such a stellar debut album is 'Queen' with Queen1.
You could just go through their debut album…..excellent piece of work. For individual songs ; biggest radio hit was probably “ Reelin’ in the Years”……. Also love Do It Again, Peg, Aja, and Kid Charlemagne……so many more…..albums worth. A new rabbit hole for you for sure. This was sometimes called “ adult rock” since it’s definitely not teenybopper music. Often put in the Yacht Rock genre these days……..sophisticated music for your cocktail party. 😏🙄

I'm pretty sure there isn't a single steely Dan song that would be considered bad everything they've produced has been so top-notch and pure quality
Holy cow - you are going down a rabbit hole for sure. One of the greatest catalogs in rock.
Steely Dan is a deep, deep, deep rabbit hole. The Beatles of jazz-rock.

Dude....Reelin' in the Years from the same album. Really.
Great band, not a bad song in their huge catalog
Just wait, you have not even touched the surface of Steely Dan yet....So much enjoyment headed your way.
Musicianship between Steely Dan and Toto from this era was absolutely phenomenal.
Jazz Fusion is totally ASIA by Steely Dan

Welcome to the world of "the Dan". At least ten songs that have been played on radio stations on a regular basis for 50 years. Just incredible musician ship. The lyrics are so good. Welcome to the rabbit hole my friend. 😃😃😃👊👊👊
Steely Dan is brilliant! I love virtually every song they've ever done. One of my favorites is "Fire In the Hole".
Steely Dan is next level in every sense of the word. They never got a line up together
The touring member recorded Two Against Nature (2000) and Everything Must Go (2003).
Love this band. I don't think they released even 1 bad song. Everything was pure fire
New bands? 😉 It's so fun to watch you discover bands that we've been listening to for decades. Brings me back to my teenage years...and they were good years.
Happy Holidays to you. SD were genius composers and lyric writers and you have a universe of sound to explore and discover in their vast catalog!

Great band SD. Try Peg from the album AJA. That album is a masterpiece
It's a main duo but they add all sorts of players for their albums.

If you like this song, you will love their albums "The Royal Scam", "Katy Lied", and their amazing album "Aja".
Also try the Eagles and The Bee Gees.
When Jimmy Page gets "home at last" he chills and listens to Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is your Favorite Band's Favorite Band !
I’m a huge guest fan… I am a huge Genesis fan… And I am a huge Steely Dan fan… I am a Dan Man through and through

Its Time to Listen to Aja, my opinion, there best song!!!!
Steely Dan is the shit!
Hmmm soft rock for daytime hard rock at night .little river band or George Benson might be worth exploring for you
You gotta check out their album Aja. Nothing but classics.
They had a lot of hits that got a lot of well-deserved radio play. But some of my faves, such as this, never actually charted. Another was "Midnite Cruiser." This will be a fun dive.
Love this ❤️😘🥰🌹💋👋
I had a feeling you would dig this. Its a nice rabbit hole to go down.
'Can't Buy A Thrill'.....My Absolute favourite Steely Dan album. The only other artist who I can think of who produced such a stellar debut album is 'Queen' with Queen1.

Ok two tracks from Charles & Eddie: “Shine” and their smash global hit “Would I Lie to You?” >> Mind. Blown. Guaranteed.
Steely Dan's early stuff was way better than the later songs!
