One correction: "A Time To Kill" was not one of those "forgettable films with macho titles" or that he moved on to play "serious roles" after it. It WAS a serious role, an intense film with Matthew playing a non-violent, subdued role.
Agreed- it is an adaptation of a John Grisham novel where Matthew plays a small-time lawyer hired to defend a black man accused of murdering the men who raped his 10 year old daughter, in the deep South, with the KKK lurking in the shadows and the built in prejudice conflicting with how much we like the righteous retribution the father gets after the justice system failed his daughter. It was definitely an early attempt at a more serious role, and had a cast to back that up.
Yeah it shouldn't have been glossed over in the video, movie had a big cast too. First role as a leading man surrounded by Sam Jackson, Sandra Bullock and Kevin Spacey and he still stood out in his performance
The Gentleman was one of the best examples. Also the first season of True Detective was one of the best TV series I have ever watched along with only the first season of Westworld
Finally someone knows Guy Richie's The Gentelmen. Feel like that movie went into oblivion. IT's a shame cause it's such a good movie, one of my all time favorites
He was *amazing* in True Detective. He's not just acting - that character lives in him somewhere just like the Joker lived in Heath Ledger. Interstellar was a fine scifi movie and he acted well but the character was just a normal guy. True Detective had him reaching for a very small part of himself that he had to amplify for that role and he did an extremely convincing job.
Yeah, True Detective convinced me that this guy who was, in my mind, just a pretty good actor was in fact one of the finest performers alive today. Harrelson did fantastic as well, but we're talking about McDonalday right now. :)
I agree that him as Rust Cohl is so iconic a performance that it’s up there with Ledger’s Joker. Especially because both roles were so unbelievably dark and both actors, albeit at very different points along the same journey, were both perceived as “romantic leading men” types, cuties who could make us laugh-and then when we saw Cohl or Joker, we completely forgot who was playing them because they had utterly disappeared inside the character.

A Time to Kill was the first time I heard of Matthew McConaughey. He was excellent in that movie. I always thought the rom coms gave him an undeserved goofy reputation. He always had some serious acting chops. In A Time to Kill, he shared the screen with Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey, and he was every bit their equal.
Criminal of you to downplay "A Time to Kill". That was the film that made his name as a serious actor. It was his first serious dramatic role, surrounded by a stellar cast that he more than held his own against, as well as carrying the film as it's lead. Could almost swear you haven't actually seen the film, given that kind of disrespect being shown to it.
That movie is the best John Grisham adaptation thanks to the excellent casting and Joel Schuamcher’s direction & the powerful dialogue. McConaughey’s tearful closing argument just brings out the waterworks
Talk about the McConnaissance of all movie careers. While his turn in romantic comedies was decent, his work in Killer Joe showed how excellent he was in dramas, and paved the way for more dramatic, memorable performances.
I think that flash showed earlier when he starred in “A Time to Kill” under Joel Schumacher. There’s such heart and passion in that performance; his closing statement of the trial is just beautifully written (since it is John Grisham’s book). And he’s also good in “Contact” in ‘97. I think “Killer Joe” came at the right moment for him to get out of the 2000s rom-com pigeon-hole & man that movie made me cringe (in a good way)
A Time to Kill is a marvelous movie, one of my all time favorites honestly, mostly due to McConaughey's acting. He played his character extremely well and I think this performance alone proves how good of an actor he is. I was waiting for you to comment on that movie but you sadly glosed over it. :(
I wish Bill Paxton had directed more films like it. He deftly handled the duties of directing and acting on that project; he was basically onset dad to the two young actors who played the sons who just adored him. And yeah McConaughey is creepy as hell & the final reveal did shock me
A Time To Kill, Sahara, Interstellar, Free State Of Jones, Contact, U-571, Dark Tower, ans the list goes on and on. One of our greatest contemporary actors. He's even been known to teach at his Alma mater.
Matthew is such a boss - dude is an actor who’s job it is to play characters and he turns all of his characters into him a little bit. Not many other actors I can think of that still maintain themselves throughout all their performances
I discovered him in EdTv and became instantly one of my favorite movies of my youth. People may disagree, but I could say that even though some dislike this film, he (and the others crew members) were awesome in this role. And the first season of True Detective was really awesome... Wait, I like him in all his appearances alongside Woody Harrelson !
They were going to make a sequel tv show to A Time To Kill. The last update was two years ago. I really hope they make it cause the sequel books are just as good.
I feel kinda bad that my most memorable Matthew McConaughey moment is his appearance on 'Between Two Ferns' as he's being interviewed by Zach Galifianakis, and not his starring role in True Detective.😅
McConaughey always reminded me of the lone nice-guy in pretty much every popular-kid-bully-group 😂 The one that’ll laugh along while you’re getting your head dunked in the toilet, but then-later that day-tutor you in Spanish, free of charge, and make you pinky-promise that this friendship will never leave these walls.
The man is absurdly charismatic. Truth be told, I find him less charismatic in real life, but goddamn he is magnetic on screen. I always say that is the mark of a true movie star - they are electric in whatever role they choose (good guy, bad guy, supporting character)
I'm one of those people who liked all the seasons of True Detective, I think season 2 was criminally underrated. Sure, it's not as good as Season 1, but it's hard to top a masterpiece, only Star Wars and Godfather have ever done it. Even season 3 was very good, they all felt like overdramatized documentaries.
You know, I’m surprised Christopher Nolan hasn’t thought about hiring McConaughey to be in his movies much earlier. Call me nuts, but I could totally see him as Harvey Dent for The Dark Knight. Not hating on Aaron Eckhart, but when you compare McConaughey‘s acting, especially in later movies/shows like The Lincoln Lawyer and True Detective, I could totally see him, pulling off the role.

Gotta disagree with the whole premise. Always been a diverse actor taking different roles; your gloss over your own timeline where you show he was taking roles like Frailty. Shoulda been “his doubters always been wrong” imo.

Exactly, a time to kill was his breakout role in a major studio movie
Makes me think they've never actually seen 'A Time To Kill'
