Whoever told you season one didnt need the second movie was incorrect. Quite a bit of reference to it. Worth going back for a rewatch to catch things, the creators loaded this series with so much of the movies. My Dad did that to me a long time. He threw me in the water and forced me to sink or swim. I mean I am sure he would have pulled me up. But I can get the meaning behind the lesson. I was thrown into pools and lakes to learn how to kick my legs and learn how to swim.
I suggest you also watch both The Karate Kid part 2 and part 3 since there many callbacks to those films as well plus some characters from those films will appear in later seasons of the show.

Cyberbullying isn't so simple as turning off your computer, at least not always. In a situation like Eli's they are bullying him in a public space, everybody in his school is seeing it, laughing about it, joining in. Turning off the screen won't stop it and when he goes to school it's always on his mind, who has seen it, who is laughing behind his back, every comment, every glance. You really need to think about it to understand how damaging it can be, it's not a complete stranger being a dick where you just block them, it's high school gossip that spreads even faster because of the internet and the ability to make memes about it.
Danials worst thing in this series is that he's being super petty with everything. I know he went through a lot with Cobra Kai. I get it he has some bad memories of his past. But He is being super petty. He could just mine his own business and leave Johnny alone. But he gets involved and starts messing with Johnny who just wants to try and make something of himself and it's a learning curve when teaching students, they teach him just has much as he is teaching his students. He's not a bad man, yes, he's using some of the methods that his old teacher taught him, but he just wants to take what he knows and help and make something of himself. To find his own purpose in life and Danial is actually the bigger jerk and hot head who can't control his own life or balance, he preaches about balance, yet he is the most off-balance person. I can't stand spoiled rotten snobs and bullies. Sam needs to realize her friends are fakes and her real friend she should stand by is being bullied. A true friend stands up for her friends. Sam was being a bad friend.
