Just visited my local Yamaha dealer and was interested in either MT-09 or XSR 900GP but was informed to wait out for the R9. I'll wait for Eicma to see the R9 before making my next bike purchasing decision.
It will needs to have a different gearing in the transmission to compete on track with other super sports. The current MT09's top out around 135. Older r6's can run easily into the 150's plus. The current CP3 engine configuration just doesn't have enough top end speed to compete.
Out of the competition that is not in the specific market of 900-ish CC middle-weight supersport, the correct comparison is not the Supersport950. But the PanigaleV2, also a WSSP competitor with 150hp. And then you have the MvAugusta F3 which is a 800cc triple also making about 150hp. Kawasaki having just released the new ZX6R-636 and Honda with the new CBR600RR. While the Kawa is not a homologation version for WSSP, the CBR600RR is. I don't think I would include the StreetTriple 765RS Moto2, although that is what they are using with Daytona plastics. But as of Ducati, you cannot compare it to the SuperSport950. Gotta go with the Panigale V2 as that is their competition in WSSP
I have an FZ8 and would upgrade to an FZ1 if it were available. The r9 would be perfect if it matches the more upright ergonomics vs a race tuck just to get to work in the morning. The Ducati SS was another I'd looked at too, but it is pricey.
A lot of beautiful renders, and looks is one of the factors that influences sales (it does for me so does sound) but in recent years not a lot of money is spent on paint and design esthetics ! Lets hope they don't mess it up !
Love the triple engine and the sound. Hopefully the tune it to have a slightly higher rev to 12K, it’s odd to have a sports bike to rev less than 10K. And a proper sports chassis and suspension tune, the MT09 feels slightly top heavy.
Yamaha are narrowing in on something sweet. I love my 2021 MT-09 and like how they’ve updated the geometry to a slightly sportier rider position for the 2024 MT-09. The R6 never lit my fire and the R1 always seemed way overkill for my riding style. I like to shred mountain twisties. Torque, handling, and ergonomics are key. I think a production R9 could fit that niche quite nicely.
@@godzeus9702you forgot to mention that till 0-100 and most likely 0-160 kms per hour R9 will be quicker thant liter bike which loses traction much easier than less powerful bikes. Above 250 kms per hour liter always win but do you really need such a powerful bike? I doubt it
@@exothermal.sprocket it will be a mt09 engine it will be slow against any liter bike. The Yamaha YZF R7 is a MT07 same crap 💩 both are sticks in the mud. Slow as crap 💩 and a R9 will not ever come close to beating any of the liter bikes.
I am very excited for this, I got berated and mocked not long ago on Yamaha Reddit for expressing this. I simply left the Reddit but part of me says I should have stayed just so that when it does happen I could respond with indignation. Yeah it's kinda sad about the R1, but I am not surprised, and positive about what lies ahead rather than crying about it like so many others.
the MT-09 SP is 11.8k so I would expect the R9 to come in at around 12- 12.5k or even more considering how much the XSR-900gp is, which is 2k higher than Kawasaki zx6r and Honda 600rr. Suzuki needs the GSX-R750 to comeback too at around 11k and would be the pick of the bunch.
Im having a hard time deciding on MT 9SP or R9. With my hip flexors having issues and my laziness to stretch them out. Im thinking the MT is the one. I had a 22 SP and had to sell to move across USA. Loved it, just wished I could add a fairing to it and lower the bars. The 24 has lower bars but concerned about the foot pegs. I guess I will buy the 09SP and see if I can get a test ride on the R9 later an if God allows, get it. Will look sick Blue SP or R9 next to my Blue C8.
You didn't mention anything about the middle weight GSXR 750. My all time middleweight favorite. I think it's still a champion in the middle weight class. Just my 2 cents chip in. 😊 Love your reviews! Keep revving.
I told people already when they first announced the R7 that an R9 is coming out and that is will sell more than the R7 and no one believed me "An R9 makes no sense at all, it will not come out and it would not sell anyways because nobody wants it" "The R7 makes much more sense because it will be used a lot in Twin cup and Twin competition" and so on. The fact is that the MT-09 engine is a better engine for a street bike that people would wanna keep for longer than the MT-07 engine and also the R9 will then with the MT09 engine, be much closer to the now missing R6 and after 2025 remember also the R1 will be missing from the street legal lineup and will also only be sold as a track bike like the R6. While the R9 will not fill the void completely after the R1 it is more than enough for the street. I just hope that Yamaha does not make the R9 as aggressive as the R7 because that is the only complaint people have with the R7, they should have made it more semi-aggressive like the Aprilia RS 660 and the Ducati Supersport 950, those bikes still feels very sporty while riding but the clip-ons are raised just a bit so that you are more comfortable and can ride for longer. That being said I do not want the R9 to be like the Z1000SX / Ninja 1000SX where you are sitting straight up with your back, that just feels weird to ride a sportbike like that and it also looks really weird. Let's just hope now, that Yamaha is also having the R10 in the pipeline (MT-10 in a comfortable supersport-bike) and we would have a really nice streetfighter and comfy supersport-bike range =)
As a Street Triple rider, I'm having a hard time finding a bike that makes me want to change. Lots of great bikes out there, but not clearly better. At least not in a way that makes me want to spend thousands in trade. The MT-09 and MT-10 are more of the same. If I needed to replace my bike, then they would top my list, along with the Street or Speed Triple. Still, I want something different for my mountain road riding. I love the idea of a Super Sport, but they are too impractical for the street. A more streetable, SS-style bike sounds very appealing, though, and Yamaha has always made awesome engines. So I can imagine an R9 being the my next bike. It has to be a little more ergonomically forgiving than an SS. It has to be very light with great handling (close to 400lbs wet, certainly under 440lbs). It has to have usable power at streetable speeds (not necessarily legal speeds, but I don't need 200mph capability nor do I need 100mph capability in first gear). Finally, it cannot be blisteringly hot to ride. That's what I am looking for, anyway. I thought the R7, 8R or the Daytona could be the one, but I'm afraid they might feel like a step backward from a Street Triple. Then again, our Japanese motorcycle dealer doesn't let you test ride, so unless they change their ways I will almost certainly get another Triumph.
I couldnt count the number of inaccuracies in this video. With that said, the cp3 engine needs overhauled to become a sportbike engine, especially if theyre going to race it. I don't want another naked bike with plastic. The only way I would skip buying an R1 this year is if they completely rework the R9 to be a true sportbike and if they brought out a R9M model.
Yamaha please give us Brembo master cylinders front and rear along with brakes too with braided lines On the R9 Also a power bump from 118hp to atleast 150hp Also ohlins front and rear suspension. This is insanely optimistic But one can dream.
The difference between the MT09 and the R9 will be very similar to the difference between the MT10 and the R1... hotter cams, better rods, higher gearing...
The biggest competition in terms of price and features to the r9 would be the rs660. I would know as I own one and am considering r9 to add to my stable, and have many friends tossing up weather to buy rs660 now or wait for r9. Ducati supersport may seem to be a competitor, but as I've worked in a dealership before, I can safely say not many customers ( myself included) even consider the ducati supersport when comparing bikes like rs660 for money. Other options closest are ducati v2 actually, in terms of base price, and an argument could be made for base bmw S1000rr but too much of a different bike and category. So, for me, the Aprilia rs660 is in a league of its own, and this r9 would then join it or be closet. All depends on what price it comes in at. My guess after seeing the xsr900gp price, is that it would be a bit over that, which would be more than the Aprilia rs660. Hoping it's a similar price to the base rs660 to be competitive!
What I’m hoping for is a more sport touring/standard feet position like the mt09 has. I’m not 20 anymore I have zero desire to be at a high forward lean that’s uncomfortable after 20 minutes
For any substantial race bike this will require the redline increased a couple of thousand rpm’s. This in itself will increase top power to around 150 bhp even if the torque is slightly reduced. Let’s face it, race bikes spend a very low percentage in the lower half of the rev range and an extra rpm limit will suit all of the top tracks within the series.
@@juanesteban8938its very aggressive. Seat is high and clip ons low making it a bit uncomfortable for some. I also hope R9mis not as aggressive as the R7.

@@captainaverage721 yeah but not close enough to compare to an RS 660 or Daytona. I think the CBR650R, SV650X, Ninja 650 and R7 would be categorized as "sport" rather than supersport or street

Just visited my local Yamaha dealer and was interested in either MT-09 or XSR 900GP but was informed to wait out for the R9. I'll wait for Eicma to see the R9 before making my next bike purchasing decision.
Wow. Just when I thought I was going to by the Suzuki faired 800, a R9 with cruise, take my money 🎉
It will needs to have a different gearing in the transmission to compete on track with other super sports. The current MT09's top out around 135. Older r6's can run easily into the 150's plus. The current CP3 engine configuration just doesn't have enough top end speed to compete.
My (optimized) 2020 MT09 SP tops out at 150,3 mph on the German Autobahn - a properly set up R9 will reach 160+ mph 🔥🏁
I'm guessing that they might be two engines for the R9, because triples in WSSP are capped at 800cc.
How is it capped at 800cc when the Panigale V2 has 955cc?
@@h0ij0i Because the Panigale V2 has just 2 cylinders.
Cable throttle and analog tacho with small LCD display. Sounds perfect.
I have an FZ8 and would upgrade to an FZ1 if it were available. The r9 would be perfect if it matches the more upright ergonomics vs a race tuck just to get to work in the morning. The Ducati SS was another I'd looked at too, but it is pricey.
I really wish they'd do uneven firing like the triumph's tiger if they gonna drop the cp4 so the sound is almost similar.
And a proper sports chassis and suspension tune, the MT09 feels slightly top heavy.
r9 would be nice to be the panigale v2 competition would be a super nice addition
I hope that underbody exhaust stay in r9, in my opinion it gives extra slim look to the tail and side profile
take my money now damn it
😂just go buy a MT09 it’s going to be a slow bike. Don’t ever try to race a liter bike. You will get left in the dust, 😂
@@godzeus9702you forgot to mention that till 0-100 and most likely 0-160 kms per hour R9 will be quicker thant liter bike which loses traction much easier than less powerful bikes. Above 250 kms per hour liter always win but do you really need such a powerful bike? I doubt it
@@godzeus9702 Amazing how you already know what it's going to do, when it's not been officially confirmed yet.
@@godzeus9702bro u dont know what youre talking about
@@exothermal.sprocket it will be a mt09 engine it will be slow against any liter bike. The Yamaha YZF R7 is a MT07 same crap 💩 both are sticks in the mud. Slow as crap 💩 and a R9 will not ever come close to beating any of the liter bikes.
Until it comes from Yamaha itself, not buying any other word still.
I think that GSXR 750 motor has emissions problems can't produce it any longer.
The numbers just don’t add up for a new R9
What do you mean not fast enough? @@lgrw660factory
It's going to end up more expensive than better motorcycles
I love my fz09 curious too see how the cp3 does in this bike.
How many will Yamaha produce? Hopefully more volume than just a trickle.
Love your reviews! Keep revving.
They should make a CP3-R version with lightweight goodies and all that for more revs and top end power.
I’d love the R9 too come in Orange like the R6 I love the orange
I’d cough up my money for one. I’ve had an XSR900. Love the engine.
Some say the upcoming R9 will be a retro looking like the new CF Moto 500SR Voom. You reckon?
The R9 is the most logically answer for the gap in between.
r9 would be the perfect replacement for my old 848. If not, I'm looking at a 950SS, or maybe a Husky Vit 801.
Yamaha please give us
Brembo master cylinders front and rear along with brakes too with braided lines
On the R9
Also a power bump from 118hp to atleast 150hp
Also ohlins front and rear suspension.
This is insanely optimistic
But one can dream.
And how much is this spec going to cost? Sounds like R1 money to me…
I don't think it needs more power , it's already going to have much better electronics
The difference between the MT09 and the R9 will be very similar to the difference between the MT10 and the R1... hotter cams, better rods, higher gearing...
Better get your wallet out.
@@loftyintentions1985 haha😂 I like this one
Nothing can beat the sound of an R6 screaming at 16k rpm with aftermarket exhaust.
But would the top end be restricted like it is on the mt09 or will the ecu be fully unlocked
Yamaha should - for the road / private track days - also launch the CP3 turbo version (patent filed) with 180+ hp 🤩💥💯🏁
What I’m hoping for is a more sport touring/standard feet position like the mt09 has. I’m not 20 anymore I have zero desire to be at a high forward lean that’s uncomfortable after 20 minutes
The mt-09 or Tracer 9 GT exists for that. This is to be a true supersport race replica.
Tracer 9gt
I think the r9 will come out with about 120 to 125 hp factory but with tuning and exhaust it will go up to 130 to 134 ish
My 18 was making 131.5. The new bigger motor should be 160 easy.
Now what will be replacing the R1? 🤔
Nothing can replace an inline 4, it will still be on sale in the american market, but not in the euro market
This doesn't seem to make sense well for us here in the U.K.
As yamaha doesn't want to proceed with euro 5 emissions regs.
So how would we get the R9
They will detune it to get it compliant and make it Flash-able to those that want it. Its easier to do that with a bigger motor.
@@spartanx169x okay but if soo why drop further production of r1
@@512460 It’s harder to make a high-revving 4 cylinder compliant compared to an engine with fewer cylinders and a lower rev ceiling.
@@hokogan okay this I understand. Thanks
R1 sales have dropped off a cliff, could be made euro regulations compliant but it's not worth the investment for negligible returns .
Don't racing regulations require a production version, or does that not apply in SS?
As a general rule 2 MT09 owner I hope the riding position is not as bad as the R7. If they nail that I’ll upgrade to one
What is bad about the R7 riding position? (Genuine question)

Would the R9 be competition to the Ducati V2?
Will most definitely consider the R9, if and only if the ergonomics are at least as comfortable as the Ducati Supersport or Suzuki 8R. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Yamaha will follow the R7 and make a very pretty bike that's way too uncomfortable for street use. Meanwhile I'm getting the new MT09.

I expect a price between 11-15k and I am very happy to see it coming. Only problem is to have the money 😭
So fucking hyped, that thing has +30 more NM! Then the R6 meaning you are so fucking quicker + the same hp if not a bit more + it weighs roughly the same . That shit will be so nice and a bigger engine means it last longer. 900cc and „only“ 120hp is really not that much
You and your electronics - keep it simple. The 900cc tripple in a sports frame would be great but in sunlight riding - I'll take analogue gauges any day over reflective TFT's
Back to ya phone Bob.🤣
The triple is smoother than the 4 cylinder.
Still hope the xsr900 gp comes out in America.
You forgot the mv 800 or the triumph 765
I think this two are the biggest competeters, instead of the Ducati
Interesting vid. Presumably it would cost about a grand more than the XSR900 GP. I'd love to see Suzuki bring back an updated GSXR750. Very unlikeky though sadly.
Do you think that it will have fuel gage and cruise control
Yeah, and what colours do you think it will come in? 🤣 MotoBob has made a chicken out of a feather here…
@@lgrw660factory almost all the colors are cool to a degree that you can't decide which one is the best and you don't see much verities on other bikes in dealers
@@undecodable6145 Offering lots of colourways is expensive. I already think the R7 is expensive for what it is. I can only imagine what a real R9 would cost. Yamaha are discontinuing the R1 partly because it’s so expensive that they don’t sell that many of them. Most manufacturers are trying to offer cheaper bikes that sell in higher volumes. Yamaha clearly went for that with the R7.
I thought someone had already said that the street one is ready to go and they are still working on race version. No 900 types ? Ducati, z900, gsx s/r 750 .....

Imo there’s a huge hole in the market place for a bike like this. Currently, if you’re an experienced sport rider who likes fairings and clip ons but don’t want 200hp and don’t have 20k $ plus to spend, you’re basically out of luck you have to buy used.
In comparison to the Ducati SS i would hope the R9 would be lighter, more agile, and at least a couple of grand cheaper.

As soon as it gets out, I'll get rid of my Tuono 660, hello R9.
I want an RS660. Do you think the RS660 would be significantly worse than an R9?
@garboi8976 Nah. The R9 would just be slightly more powerful. The Aprilias are very sexy bikes. If you don't have a bike now, don't wait and go for the RS660, there are great deals on used bikes. Who knows when this R9 will be launched, they say at EICMA November 2024, but then you would need to pre order it and wait till 2025.

R9 will never come to our Indian shores unfortunately, and even if it does it’ll be fully imported and hence unreasonably expensive.
