My most devastating moment as a furniture maker.

- I wanted to create these modern floating nightstands as a way to add more visual interest to the
bedroom. But in order to make the designs pop, I wanted the front to really grab your attention.
With the help of my friend Paul (of Copper Pig Fine Woodworking), we carved a modified Asanoha
Japanese pattern into the front of these drawers and filled it with brass powder and epoxy. With all of the unique aspects of this design, I never would have thought that it would end in such a disaster!
Huge thanks to @Totalboat for the epoxy and Paul Jasper for all his assistance. Be sure to check out
his amazing work on IG!!

As soon as that one stand fell off, you could see Jerry’s faith in your fastening system completely change. He was like “I have to get off this thing right meow!” They turned out great, btw.
😂🤣 His street smarts immediately kicked in!

Keith - just wanted to pop in to let you know your style of commentary is really refreshing and easy to watch. It feels like the formula for most woodworking channels is to fill videos with puns, stand up comedy, and now clickbaiting the supremely high cost of builds. I appreciate your ability to provide some subtle comedy with such an emphasis on the actual build and techniques within. Keep up the good work!
Wow! Thanks Cameron. I super appreciate the thoughtful comment and feedback. It really does help me as I produce more videos. Cheers!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking no prob man! Just started building out my Festool collection so your vids will definitely help with techniques for the Domino, tracksaw, etc!
@@cameronbalch834 Sweet! Enjoy the green Kool-Aid!!
Keith, great job on the nightstands and the video. You do a great job in documenting the process of making your pieces. I really enjoy your videos because you aren't afraid to show the mistakes that can be made, and I believe you do it so we can learn from them. I can't imagine how much faster things would go if you didn't have to film everything. Love the walnut and the inlay also. I would love to see more about your design process, and you you come up with the projects themselves. Happy New Year to you and yours. I hope that it is safe, healthy and successful.
Super appreciate that Doug! Filming and editing takes an incredible amount of time that isn’t always worth it. And great idea on showing the design process in future vids. I’ll try to incorporate that! Be well!
Congrats on getting your video out before Jason's
😂 That was my only goal in this whole process...
Thanks for keeping it real as always KJ and nice work!
😂 I try! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful work Keith! Thanks for sharing.
Right on! Thanks for watching, Sean!
Beautiful job, Keith. So sorry about the mishap. I hope 2022 is a great year for you and your family. Be safe!
Thanks Jay! Same to you!
Incredible job on these, Keith!

I was convinced at the beginning that you had mastered the art of visual effects (VFX). Sorry to hear that it was reality. It happens to the best of us. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. It was enjoyable as always!

Awesome Work Keith! Always a pleasure when i see a video drop from you!
I appreciate that, Michael! Thank you!
Always a good day to see a new video from you. Yours are my favorite of all the woodworking channels I watch but the least frequent. I’ll take that quality over quantity any day!
Wow! Very kind! That is much appreciated, Brad. Happy new Year!
So glad to have a new video! I’ve watched all of your videos at least twice and I love them! You are great. Keep up the awesome work. Also, listened to several Shop Sounds today on a 4 hour trip. It was a Keith kind of day!

I just had a similar problem trying to figure out how to make a floating shelf that I could hang my ~35lb e-bike about 14 inches away from the wall. It just felt like the pressure treated wood I used was not handling things and trying to cantilever itself off. So I wound up just driving a big lag screw through the top cleat from the inside into the stud behind, anchoring it hard in place. since it's not going to be a movable piece of furniture, it really wound up making sense to hard mount it to the wall, and the cleat was just a super simple way of getting it nice and square in the right spot.
After a single 3 inch lag bolt and washer went into the back cleat it locked down hard to the wall. Nice and sturdy.
Oh nice! Yeah, the problem here was the distance from the wall when the door was full opened far exceeded the height, so like you said it was cantilever central. Just needed to screw the cleat of the nightstand into the wall as well once installed.
Saw a short on Facebook and had to look you up on youtube. Big fan! Love your work and your videos. Lots of food for thought for this aspiring woodworker.
Awesome! Thank you! I really appreciate that, Sean.
Wow Keith those were beautiful!
Nice job! Happy New Year!
Thank you! HNY to you as well!
Great video. Beautiful tables. Mahalo for sharing! : )

Hola🖐 Mr. KJ, a very Happy New Year to you!!! I was checking out Jason's video on his floating nightstands when he inserted that clip of the drawer falling off and I just had to run over here and check it out for myself. I feel your pain good sir, they turned out nice and in a split second, boom! I'm sure you'll have a fix. They look great, all the best to you in 2022!!! Have a good one, Adios!
Happy new year! Thanks so much for stopping by! Yeah, I still haven't repaired the "blemish"...I'm still too heartbroken. LOL.
Sweet build Keith!! The Lamello is interesting in how it pulls the joint tightly together. I feel like its one and only issue (besides the price tag) is that it leaves a visible hole. It's certainly nice to not need clamps though.
Also, that intro is solid gold
As long as you plan ahead so the access hole will never be visible, then it's not a problem. Just like any other hidden fastener. And yes, it really pulls that miter together nice and tight. 💪
Beautiful work, Keith! They look amazing!!! 😃
About the French cleat accident, drive a screw through it to fix it to the wall! 😬
And I hope you can easily fix it!
Merry Christmas, happy new year and stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks man! It was just a temporary install for photos, but definitely learned my lesson. Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
Keith I've been waiting for a new video! and you came back with a big one!
😂 And a big BOOM at that! Thanks Danny!
Great videos. Hope your back with more soon.
Working on it! Thank you!
Add a nice threaded insert and bolt underneath the nightstand that bumps into the french cleat on the wall. This keeps it from accidently falling off by getting bumped. That said, beautiful build! I love the brass powder inlay design!!
Thanks Brian! I appreciate it!
its a so great work good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
What an awesome job Keith! 👍🏻 When that one fell off the wall I thought it was a joke but after looking at it on the end no joke! 😞 Good old Jerry trying to tighten up that clamp! 😸 Hey he tried! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Bill! I wish it WAS a joke! 😂
I tensed up so hard I hurt myself when it fell off the wall. I'm so sorry that happened! Thanks for sharing your process. I'm building something now I'm going to try the metal inlay on. Metal Powders USA order arrives on Thursday!
Thanks Phillip! Yeah, that one is gonna burn for a while 😂. Very cool to hear you are going to the metal inlay technique. Good luck!

Of course! 😹
The Lamello tool looks pretty cool. On this specific project, would you be able to get by with just the clamex connectors (no wood glue)? I'm looking to build similar floating nightstands, but with option to disassemble them.
Yes, with the Clamex connectors, you can build with the option to disassemble. Each connector has over 200 pounds of clamping force.
Please make a short video showing your process for repairing that damage! I'm curious to know what you end up doing.
I’m curious to know, too! 😂
Very nice, respect 👍🏼
Thanks very much!
Nice work. I like that design. I’ve used those push to open a few times they can be pretty finicky. 👍🏼🤠👍🏼
Thanks Sal! Yeah, I've used them in the past and they worked OK, but now I see why BLUM discontinued them...they ARE finicky as you said. Ugh.
Hi Keith, as always , beautiful work . As soon as I saw the stand come off the wall I stated one of my most often repeated mantras - I hate french cleats. I tend to over build everything but they don't fall off the wall.
Yeah, I'm just glad I figured out the issue before the client. 😂 French cleats are amazing in so many situation, but not where there is so little height in the piece and so much extension horizontally.
Beautiful work! I just started on a pair today, thanks for the lesson in how to NOT hang them!😂
Haha. My pleasure! 😂
great video !!!! good thing that the box fell down ! now we get to see a fixing video too !!!!!!!! ............ greetings from Germany

Keith, Jason same up with a great fix to that "Oh Sh*tI" moment. He even gave you credit for the inspiration. What a nice guy. LOL
All joking aside, beautiful build.
Thanks Doug! Yeah, Jason and I are good friends so I know all about his backstage shenanigans 😂
Oh man, that sucks that it fell off! They look great!
Thanks Bruce! Yeah, it’s pretty beat up 😢
Setting a rectangular block under the cleat inside the back and against the bottom of the box may keep it on the cleat super nice. Sad to see it damaged. Beautiful work.
Great tip! Thanks!

Amazing that I can have watched hundreds of woodworking videos in my life but still learn stuff from your videos Keith. If you’re looking for a solution, I hear some bearded

I hope you learned to use another method of hanging besides French cleats 😂. But seriously, thanks bro, I appreciate the comment! See you in February!! 👊

Absolutely gutted that the one fell off, because they turned out so damn nice, Keith. As a side note, I would like to see how you fix it, if you don’t mind. I’m intrigued.
I hope you had a nice Christmas / Holiday. All the best to you.
Thanks Chris. Still recovering from this one. LOL. Not sure on a fix yet. Will post a video on IG if I film anything. Happy New Year!!
I always like having the French clear there to make it level and temporarily hold it in place, but then still drive home a screw in a stud to prevent it coming off the cleat while using or accidentally bumping it.
Yep! Smart move!
That was painful watching you dropping that nightstand even Jerry was like I am out of here
Oh yeah, he wasn't sticking around for that aftermath 😹

Haha. Epic is right! Thanks for watching!
Is the bed to those nightstands your next project? Would be awesome!
Not next project, but somewhere down the line.
That is beautiful and way over the top for nightstands 🙂. I think for such a long but shallow box you have to screw the French cleat to the wall or each other.
It would appear so! 👍
The cat running away hahahaha
Running away from blame 😂
Great video and production quality!
How did you correct the issue with the cleats?
For a future project I am considering adding a back panel to the cabinet inside of the cleat so it could be fastened to the wall cleat
Thanks! I screwed it to the wall once hung on the cleat.
R7700 for 2 floating nightstands... all i can say is... HOLY CRRRRRAPOLI!! looks fantastic tho
😂 Thank you!
Nice project and video. Not sure I'm quite ready to break out the Clamex for drawer box construction but... on second thought.... Also, you can have as much CNC time as you want for free down here but you do have to come to Texas...
The Clamex are just internal clamps until the glue dries! And with the Shaper Origin, I have a personal CNC at my fingertips 😜, but thanks for the offer to come alllllll the way to Texas! 😜😂

Thanks Parker! Lola and Jerry are Chartreux cats…i thought they were Russian blues, but the adoption shelter told me “nice try, sir” 😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Really? I always thought Chartreux cats had those like amber colored eyes. Well that's even more strange that they look so similar. Thanks for the reply!

🙏🙌
Really nice work, Keith. I must admit, I was surprised to see that you decided to attach the pocket holes from the inside. I know they are not visible unless the drawer is removed but since they are going to be hanging from a cleat, why not have them facing the cleat? Also would have been easier to fasten them from the outside, no need for the right angle drill attachment. Anyway, they look great! 👍
😂 you say “what not outside” and i say “why not inside?” Pocket holes aren’t meant to be celebrated so i hide them when possible
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I agree with you, pocket holes are not meant to be "celebrated", (hence my initial comment lol) they are ugly AF, but also practical (at times). What I'm saying is, the pocket holes are less likely to be seen if they were to face the mating wall cleat. I might even take it a step further and attach a back to the "box" and hide the cleat all together.
@@righthook27 I understand what you’re saying, I just didn’t want to do it that way
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking That's probably what you should have said in the first place. You not wanting to do it that way makes more sense than your first reply 🤣😂
seems like lamello would be great for builds which might be assembled/disassembled. I don’t see the point if it’s all going to get glued anyway. Why incur the fastener cost?
Enables a perfect dry fit
As always, nice build! Sucks it got messed up, but now you have a topic for your next video, "How to repair a damaged floating nightstand with epoxy inlay" 😃
😂🤣 that’s a pretty niche video!
Another great project, these look great....even with a dent. 😂
😂 You mean the character blemish?! 😬😹
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking you are right that is what I meant.
KJ what is the set up you have on the edge of your table that holds the festool track? I want to add that flip track saw set up to my table.
Here you go: dashboardpws.com/products/guide-rail-brackets-bundle
So for your 1/4in “plywood”, you glued the 2 panels together with the grain running in the same direction and just offset the seams? No worries about strength or warping? Will that work with softwoods too?
And those are beautiful. I really like the chamfer detail that insets the drawers.
With thin plywood and quartersawn thin hardwood that is a floating panel in a groove, I don't really worry about warping and it's strong like bull once glued. If you are trying to make a custom piece of "plywood" with just thin layers of wood, then grain should be alternated to keep panel flat.

You have to use Camar 806.
I’ll check them out. Thank you.
Hey KJ! Could you use your Lamello connectors to join the cleat to each other? Not necessarily using the 45 degree cleat but just two boards butted together? Can they handle the shear force?
Hmmmm…interesting idea!! Would definitely be worth some experimenting 👍🏻
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking all you would need is a secondary cleat that wasn’t a french cleat (just a small rectangular board) underneath the first so once it sat down on the top it basically hinges down on the lower and can’t cantilever up anymore, except for if you want to remove it the way you installed it, if that makes sense. No hardware necessary, just physics like the french cleat
