- I wanted to create these modern floating nightstands as a way to add more visual interest to the
bedroom. But in order to make the designs pop, I wanted the front to really grab your attention.
With the help of my friend Paul (of Copper Pig Fine Woodworking), we carved a modified Asanoha
Japanese pattern into the front of these drawers and filled it with brass powder and epoxy. With all of the unique aspects of this design, I never would have thought that it would end in such a disaster!

As soon as that one stand fell off, you could see Jerry’s faith in your fastening system completely change. He was like “I have to get off this thing right meow!” They turned out great, btw.

Keith, great job on the nightstands and the video. You do a great job in documenting the process of making your pieces. I really enjoy your videos because you aren't afraid to show the mistakes that can be made, and I believe you do it so we can learn from them. I can't imagine how much faster things would go if you didn't have to film everything. Love the walnut and the inlay also. I would love to see more about your design process, and you you come up with the projects themselves. Happy New Year to you and yours. I hope that it is safe, healthy and successful.

I just had a similar problem trying to figure out how to make a floating shelf that I could hang my ~35lb e-bike about 14 inches away from the wall. It just felt like the pressure treated wood I used was not handling things and trying to cantilever itself off. So I wound up just driving a big lag screw through the top cleat from the inside into the stud behind, anchoring it hard in place. since it's not going to be a movable piece of furniture, it really wound up making sense to hard mount it to the wall, and the cleat was just a super simple way of getting it nice and square in the right spot.
After a single 3 inch lag bolt and washer went into the back cleat it locked down hard to the wall. Nice and sturdy.
Oh nice! Yeah, the problem here was the distance from the wall when the door was full opened far exceeded the height, so like you said it was cantilever central. Just needed to screw the cleat of the nightstand into the wall as well once installed.
Saw a short on Facebook and had to look you up on youtube. Big fan! Love your work and your videos. Lots of food for thought for this aspiring woodworker.

Sweet build Keith!! The Lamello is interesting in how it pulls the joint tightly together. I feel like its one and only issue (besides the price tag) is that it leaves a visible hole. It's certainly nice to not need clamps though.
Also, that intro is solid gold
As long as you plan ahead so the access hole will never be visible, then it's not a problem. Just like any other hidden fastener. And yes, it really pulls that miter together nice and tight. 💪

Add a nice threaded insert and bolt underneath the nightstand that bumps into the french cleat on the wall. This keeps it from accidently falling off by getting bumped. That said, beautiful build! I love the brass powder inlay design!!

The Lamello tool looks pretty cool. On this specific project, would you be able to get by with just the clamex connectors (no wood glue)? I'm looking to build similar floating nightstands, but with option to disassemble them.
Yes, with the Clamex connectors, you can build with the option to disassemble. Each connector has over 200 pounds of clamping force.
Please make a short video showing your process for repairing that damage! I'm curious to know what you end up doing.

Hi Keith, as always , beautiful work . As soon as I saw the stand come off the wall I stated one of my most often repeated mantras - I hate french cleats. I tend to over build everything but they don't fall off the wall.
Yeah, I'm just glad I figured out the issue before the client. 😂 French cleats are amazing in so many situation, but not where there is so little height in the piece and so much extension horizontally.

Setting a rectangular block under the cleat inside the back and against the bottom of the box may keep it on the cleat super nice. Sad to see it damaged. Beautiful work.

I always like having the French clear there to make it level and temporarily hold it in place, but then still drive home a screw in a stud to prevent it coming off the cleat while using or accidentally bumping it.

That is beautiful and way over the top for nightstands 🙂. I think for such a long but shallow box you have to screw the French cleat to the wall or each other.

For a future project I am considering adding a back panel to the cabinet inside of the cleat so it could be fastened to the wall cleat

Nice project and video. Not sure I'm quite ready to break out the Clamex for drawer box construction but... on second thought.... Also, you can have as much CNC time as you want for free down here but you do have to come to Texas...
The Clamex are just internal clamps until the glue dries! And with the Shaper Origin, I have a personal CNC at my fingertips 😜, but thanks for the offer to come alllllll the way to Texas! 😜😂

I think we’ve all experienced dropping something we’ve worked on. Fittingly he doesn’t even try to pick it up, just “the hell with it”. Damage done. My dad used to say “unfortunately you’ll always stick the landing, no matter how you got there”.

Very cool night stands and I like the brass inlay technique. But I had to comment because your cat looks identical to mine. Like not just that he's a Russian Blue, but identical. Though I don't think I would be comfortable letting her roam around my workshop. Thanks for sharing!

Really nice work, Keith. I must admit, I was surprised to see that you decided to attach the pocket holes from the inside. I know they are not visible unless the drawer is removed but since they are going to be hanging from a cleat, why not have them facing the cleat? Also would have been easier to fasten them from the outside, no need for the right angle drill attachment. Anyway, they look great! 👍
😂 you say “what not outside” and i say “why not inside?” Pocket holes aren’t meant to be celebrated so i hide them when possible
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I agree with you, pocket holes are not meant to be "celebrated", (hence my initial comment lol) they are ugly AF, but also practical (at times). What I'm saying is, the pocket holes are less likely to be seen if they were to face the mating wall cleat. I might even take it a step further and attach a back to the "box" and hide the cleat all together.

seems like lamello would be great for builds which might be assembled/disassembled. I don’t see the point if it’s all going to get glued anyway. Why incur the fastener cost?

KJ what is the set up you have on the edge of your table that holds the festool track? I want to add that flip track saw set up to my table.

So for your 1/4in “plywood”, you glued the 2 panels together with the grain running in the same direction and just offset the seams? No worries about strength or warping? Will that work with softwoods too?
And those are beautiful. I really like the chamfer detail that insets the drawers.
With thin plywood and quartersawn thin hardwood that is a floating panel in a groove, I don't really worry about warping and it's strong like bull once glued. If you are trying to make a custom piece of "plywood" with just thin layers of wood, then grain should be alternated to keep panel flat.

Hey KJ! Could you use your Lamello connectors to join the cleat to each other? Not necessarily using the 45 degree cleat but just two boards butted together? Can they handle the shear force?

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking all you would need is a secondary cleat that wasn’t a french cleat (just a small rectangular board) underneath the first so once it sat down on the top it basically hinges down on the lower and can’t cantilever up anymore, except for if you want to remove it the way you installed it, if that makes sense. No hardware necessary, just physics like the french cleat

It literally happened hours before video release, so I haven’t fully come to grips with the damage yet 😂
