    What people forget of Hleb is that not only was he a super talented guy going forward but he worked his socks off getting back and protecting his fullback.
    There was a small period of time when we had both Hleb and Rosicky on opposite flanks and we were absolutely running riot going forward and teams just couldn't get behind us on the outside because both Hleb and Rosicky worked so hard defensively as well. It was a small period because Rosicky was always injured and Hleb would eventually be sold, but I remember it being such a shame because we had a beautiful balance to our team with both of those guys playing well and Flamini eventually hitting some great form in the DM role before being sold too.

      Such an elegant baller. He was top drawer technically. His balance, close control, vision, disguise, feints and swift drops of the shoulder that he would do when he was dribbling were great to watch. His timing and weight of pass as well were excellent and he was brilliant at creating space for teammates to run into by drawing opposition players towards him when he was in possession of the ball. He's on the record publicly as well saying that the worst thing he ever did was leaving Arsenal and going to Barcelona or something to that effect. He doesn't get talked about enough by fans when talking about this period. Most fans from other clubs probably don't even remember him. Very underrated and underappreciated.

    Watched Hleb play for his national team against France a long time ago.
    Describing how Hleb went past a french player who was standing right in front of Hleb, the commentator said, "he [Hleb] dribbled past him [the french player] like he was not there."
    And truly, it was like the french player was not there.
    I actually didn't see how Hleb did it, I just saw that Hleb was suddenly behind the guy. It was magical.

      @@oisin5684being born in 2002, I didn't know about Hleb until many years later because I only became a Arsenal around 2008, but playing games like Fifa 06 introduced me to great technical players like Hleb
      If we have a player like Hleb in our current squad we would be cooking these back lines, Hleb was not afraid to take on multiple defenders and was keen to draw in defenders so he could create space for attackers in the box,
      Grealish is similar in a sense when drawing in defenders to create space for Haaland, Alvarez to create scoring opportunities, but fans nowadays only care about G/A which is why players like Hleb aren't talked about enough

    • @oisin5684
      @oisin5684 Год назад +2

      @rajorn2223 I was only 10 when he left for Barca in 2008 so I wasn't exactly watching him with the most analytical of minds at the time but I was still old enough to appreciate his quality although when I look back on these old compilations of his time at Arsenal I definitely have more of a new-found respect and further appreciation for his quality. He was a far silkier dribbler with the ball than Grealish, though. He could actually drop a shoulder and burst past someone by using his snappy footwork to weave and swivel his way past opponents if need be, even though he wasn't exactly the quickest or he'd at least release the ball a lot earlier and keep things moving in the worst case scenario instead of hogging the life out of the ball and slowing things down like Grealish. He was quality at breaking opposition lines by threading through balls in behind there back four or midfield as the key initial defence splitting pass in an attacking move to open things up for teammates. "The master of the pre-assist" is a good description of his style of play that I once saw someone refer to him as, which is a good way of putting it. He might not have always been credited with the assist for goals but he was always instrumental in the general build up play by as I said, playing that crucial defence splitting pass to unlock the opposition or by jinking past his man in a one on one situation. Top technical baller.

      He also tended to hold on to the ball too long. He always had to dribble a bit before releasing the ball which often lead to missed opportunities to build lethal attacks. I remember that one very credible criticism of him. For all his great foot work and ball control. He didn't see things early enough and make quick decisions. Which is what sets players like Iniesta apart. Your brain has to work faster and more intelligently than your feet does.

      Hleb was a frustrating passer, would often give poor passes to no one, and he couldn't finish for his life, unlike Pires and Ljungberg who were clinical as top strikers.
      On the other hand, he was an absolutely brilliant dribbler, impossible to lose the ball even with multiple players pressing him. Also a very hardworking player, helped defensively too. Injury free during his time at Arsenal too.
      I knew he wouldn't fit at Barca, precisely because of his poor passing and link up, and always thought it was strange they wanted him.

    Henry left Arsenal in the summer of 2007, and the media and fans didn't expect much from Arsenal at the beginning of season 07/08. Even with a young Adebayor who was rising and learning how to score and a RVP who missed half of season due to injuries and Eduardo who got a career-derailed injury just when he was about to shine, Arsenal still came very close to EPL title that season and lost to Liverpool in UCL due to multiple poor refereeing against them. All this happened thanks to the supreme midfielder combination of H13-F4-R7 along with in-form Flamini. H13 was the pre-assist king who helped Febregas open the field before the final killing pass. Season 07/08 was probably the best Arsenal in terms of creativity and control and skills since 2005.

    Ljumberg - Walcott
    Pires - Hleb
    Vieira - Diaby
    Gilberto - Denilson
    Bergkamp - Fabregas
    Lauren - Eboue
    You can see how Arsene's scouting network was miles ahead as generational change felt natural. The only thing I regret was not also betting on experienced signings like Campbell was at the time or not having replaced Ashley Cole. Football was also going through a process of more inmediate impact of money where Arsene failed to see that he developed talent so that they end up leaving as soon as they improve.

    • @MelvinJ64
      @MelvinJ64 Год назад +2

      Every replacement you listed there was a clear downgrade. With the Exception of Fabregas. Bergkamp and Fabregas never played the same position. So it's ridiculous you used them. Walcott, Diaby, Denilson and Eboue were sub par. Their careers went nowhere. Hleb's career also crashed after he left Arsenal. Fabregas is the only true world class player that shined. Wenger should have been fired by 2010 but for Cult worship at the club and lack of true ambition by ownership and management.

      Some interesting comparisons but not quite sure some of those guys were brought in as direct successors to the players before and really this highlights how poor those following the Invincibles were in direct comparison.
      Even as good as Fabrigas was - very different player to Bergkamp, and was considered the successor to Vieira who had just peaked and was on his way out. And with it a complete change in dynamic in the way Arsenal played - favouring far too much technique over power and pace (the balance Patrick wonderfully had in his game).
      Never replacing Campbell was one of the biggest mistakes that Arsenal made and have taken 20 years to try and rectify. But back in the day's when Sol was leaving im sure we were set to try and sign Kompany - I remember being so excited because I knew how good Kompany was before he signed for City - so was gutted we didnt get him. He would have been that next generation talent to play at CB, Should have been Adams, Sol then Kompany.

    • @Keleu

      @@gladiatorscoops4907 Fabregas as it happened with Bergkamp before, is the player you build your team around. In the invencibles team the main thing wasnt if Dennis scored but he was the key to a smooth gameplay. Diaby box to box beast, walcott taking the runs, hleb 1v1 agressive close to rivals goal. You can see succession in the roles they ocupy, then obviously it was not the same.
