As an MMB member myself, I acknowledge the caliber of the OSUMB. In fact, I think we should all take the time to recognize the quality of ensembles the Big Ten has and appreciate what each of them bring to the tradition and pageantry of the best conference in collegiate sports.
This video never gets old. I get the chills watching it on RUclips, I can only imagine what it must be like to see it in person. You have to love the beauty of college football, and the pageantry of traditions such as this. GO BLUE!
This is amazing. The first time I saw this, it put tears in my eyes. Through thick and thin, through wins and losses, I will forever love this school and their teams. God bless every tradition, and school, but when God made Michigan, he truly broke the mold. GO BLUE!

The University of Michigan Marching Band was the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy and recognized as the top marching band in the nation by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. You can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so the school that wins it first is the most highly regarded, and that's the University of Michigan. lol It was John Philip Sousa himself that proclaimed that "The Victors", Michigan's famous fight song, was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was composed in 1898 by a University of Michigan student, Louis Elbel. "The Victors" was first performed publicly by Sousa's famous band with John Philip Sousa himself as conductor. So don't be jealous! We don't give a crap about other marching bands, because our band has the pedigree and accolades to back its superiority.
Yes, the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, is considered the Heisman Trophy of band awards, and Michigan was the very 1st college marching band to be awarded the prestigious trophy. Also John Philip Sousa himself proclaimed that "The Victors" was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was also first performed publicly by Sousa & his famous band.
Its also reported that the Victors is the ONLY song to have ever brought tears to the eyes of Bob Ufer. 100 MEEECHIGAN WOLVERINES!!!! And the best damn band too! GO BLUE!
I was in the MMB flag corps 75-77. I remember well the sweeps on Elbel Field until your feet were burning. Practicing the 212 beat per minute entry was a major rush. All worth it to hear the Maize and Blue faithful roar when we exited the tunnel, each weekend. I've seen countless marching and corps bands, overall the MMB is right up there with the best. I dig the changes the band has made. The lock step toward the north endzone is very impressive. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work! YUBA and GO BLUE
"If that doesn't get you fired up, I don't know what will. Unless you're an Ohio State fan then you're probably retching in the corner or something" LMAO
Is it any wonder? Even the legendary John Philip Sousa called "The Victors" the greatest college football march ever composed. Composed in 1898 by Michigan student, Louis Elbel, Michigan's fight song is also a college football march.
I'm going to the UoM game on Saturday, should be great. I can't wait to hear the familiar sights and sounds from last year. The weather should be near perfect luckily.
I can definitely appreciate this as well, but being a band geek, I’m messed up. I was raised in a Purdue house and I dearly love the All-American marching band, but I am going to go to Ohio State which is not only TBDBITL but the best in the universe. But I appreciate this because my high school is in Notre Dame territory and has become the best combination of Notre Dame and Michigan ever... Blue and Gold.,.
The average person who is not in band would rarely notice the mess up in the beginning....I didn't until it was pointed out. For 95% of the fans it's about the fight song itself and the M formation moving across the field as the instruments boom. This sends chills through me everytime I watch this or witness it live. The march and fight song rule regardless of mess ups...and that is all that matters to most people who view this.
Coming from a Prospect of TBDBITL, I will admit, you guys have your cool traditions and things that made me chuckle. I really liked your guy's marching "M" a tradition I'm sure you are proud of, and hats off to your Drum Major, literally! The hops-step does seem a little silly though and you guys need a little work on keeping the lines a little straighter, but whatever Michigan, keep get better so you can keep us on our toes. Keep the rivalry strong!
As a Longhorn alum,I bleed Burnt Orange but this is the only non UT video I have saved. It is a fanastic pre game ceremony. I look forward to the time when M has their football program back to the winning tradition!!
I didn't know Michigan's marching band had clarinets! Our high school marching band does too, but only because it's so tiny. :) But obviously college level clarinetists sound exponentially better than high school, so it's cool that they have them.
Sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. I love it! Go Blue! And as for the drum major they have done it for years, just a superstition. If he nails it, then another win for Meeechigan. As well as the baton toss in the goal post.
@mwshephard The Drum Line Screwed up the Cadence. They played the part where they were supposed to move to early and wrong, thus they had to do it twice. The first people to move heard it and moved, everyone else knew someone screwed up and waited, thus making it seem they screwed up. The Drum Line is the one at fault.
@17drumBoy According to The Ohio State University Library, a similar floating formation wasFIRST performed during the 1932 season by the University of Michigan Marching band.
did they mess up? @0:30 lol half of them ran out and run back in I saw a person on the left side 45 ran halfway out towards the 50 and ran back in, I don't know it just didn't look right
At the end of the season, watch the Bayou Classic with Southern & Grambling. Watch Southern's band. They march that way because Michigan's directors had an exchange with them, and that style was taught to Southern. Now Southern has taken it through the roof with what they do, but since I've been watching them in person since 88, Michigan is the BEST NORTHERN Marching Band for their style, showmanship, choice of songs, and for their class. They change with the times and truly are beloved. GO BLUE
@nick5man5 1. There was a new director this year. 2. There were 110,000 screaming fans that made it a hell of a lot more difficult to hear the percussion cadence command. 3. There was probably some confusion within the percussion section. 4. This is probably the only time this has ever happened, and it has most certainly not happened since. 5. The rest of the pregame show went swimmingly. Just listen to those trombones at 2:33! Stellar.
@Rockmangoes Wrong, wrong, wrong.....If you remember correctly, Lloyd Carr retired. He wasn't forced out due to lack of performance. He resigned because he felt it was in his best interest, as well as that of the program. What gets lost in the vitriol is how OSU and UM have each pushed one another to excel. What makes this rivalry so dynamic, is what has made these programs so great. The intense desire to achieve, and the indomitable will to win.
@soqerqueen200 I don't know where you went to high school, but at my school the band is half the football game. And at others in my district, the band is the football game.
@ieatglue44- U of M was the first, in the late 60's a drum major named Mark Brown was the Drum Major. and @17drumBoy he ALMOST fell to his knees because he removes cap and i've seen a lot of Drum Majors do that when they do what he did.
As an Ohio State fan, I respect Michigan. I honestly don't see any reason for me to root against UM every single week because if Michigan wins, so does the Big Ten. I'm not saying I like Michigan (Well, I don't.) , but I defiently respect them and wish them the best in the coming year not only in football, but in other sports too. Defiently can't wait until the big showdown in football this year -- hopefully two top ten teams battleing it out for a BCS/National Champ. birth. Good luck to y'all!

@nick5man5 I revise my remark. There certainly was confusion in the percussion section. It wasn't just "probably" confusion. I can hear it in the bass drum.
@GoHard1102 actually HBCUs come from University of michigan. this is the first college marching band america has ever seen back when college football got started. then after them came the greatest HBCU band that ever marched and that would be FAMU marching 100. all of the first band directors of an HBCU band graduated from this school because this was the only school at that time that had music as a major and a marching band as well

This is an awesome band (check out the way they swing when they get close ups of the band! My high school's band must be modeled off of that!) So while all the other high schools are wondering what the heck we're doing during our pregame and parades...
Its very good and no doubt Michigan has a great band. I like the runout at the beginning, even though its slower and somewhat less exciting than some others I've seen. Still, one of the better pre-game's out there.
@MichiganFan39 Yes they do, and as a Michigan fan, I take pride in respecting my team's traditions as well as those of the other schools. @RandomSpewBros: My high school band director was UM's drum major for three years in the late 70's. His first game against Northwestern, the field was soaked. When he broke through the block M, he slipped an slid fifteen yards. The crowd was laughinhg their as*es off. Even in the early 90's, he'd hear someone say at least five times each year they once saw UM's drum major once slide 15-20 on his ass.
We don't play it twice, that's the way the song goes, it goes into an interlude and back into it for one more verse. When you have the best fight song in the land, why stray from it. Look up Temptation and the Hawaiian War Chant, we play those throughout the game as well. We have a sick tradition with Temptation.

how to you get into a college marching band?
ahhhh nothing like gameday down in ann arbor, great atmosphere

Our drum major didn't get up as fast as yours - mostly because he didn't fall down and didn't have to use his arms to hoist himself back up.

what did he do?
