The most frustrating and simultaneously interesting thing Macca does is to never play two verses the same--the basics are there, but the subtle differences make it. Shows he was playing from his gut, extemporaneously, and not from a written plan (or sheet music). My guess is, he never plays any song the same way twice. Genius.

Good point. Kinda reminds me of jazz walking bass lines. I was in jazz band in high school as an electric bass guitarist. I was never "taught" music or how to read sheet music - so I would simply make up the basslines while we were playing everyday. This went unnoticed thankfully, so I got by fine! So I'm not trying to compare myself to Macca, but I can sympathize with the innate skill of being able to improvise basslines

What's ridiculous about this this bass line, is that it isn't something he spent weeks at home working out and rehearsing, but rather something worked out in the studio THAT DAY for a song he had never heard before. The talent to so quickly come up with and play this bass line is extraordinary.

Right. Most bass players if put on the spot would just mimic the melody or hit roots in time, here Paul's driving the rhythm yes but he's playing a harmony to the melody rather than playing along with the melody itself which gives more depth and accenting by alternating higher and lower phrases rather than just sticking with riffs. That's the beauty of that Beatles sound during that middle period, the guitars, drums and vocals are pretty consistently arranged and the bass just dances around all over the place while also driving with that thumpy flatwound sound.

      @Anonymous-mo3cu 4 года назад +65

@@amoru1012 Yeah, John, George and Ringo would record a song without Paul. Remember, Paul wanted to do it this way, they didn't leave him out. Paul would listen to the song a couple of times and make up a bass line as the song went along. The bass line you're hearing is not being played off of a tab or sheet, but it's Paul's creative ingenuity that you're hearing. He made this up himself as the song went along. Paul is highly intelligent and his bass lines and songs show it. He's also quite philosophical. Paul would record a bass line while listening to the song on an eight track, play and record the bass line at the same time he was listening to it, then layer it over on the recorder, then play it back. Next thing you know, there's a bass line in the song. Not all songs were like this, only after 1966.
      Edit: typo.

I guess he could make up these bass lines as he went along sort of " on the fly" because he didn't have to play them again or learn them because they stopped playing live. That gave them all a certain freedom that must've been great.

John Lennon said several times that Paul was one of the most innovative bass players ever. He was 100% correct. Paul's bass work is underrated and underappreciated. He was, and is, way way above and beyond on that thing, which he was more or less forced into playing because no one else wanted to. Try singing the high part while playing the bass--then try singing anything while playing the bass! That's almost unbelievable, a tremendous job that few musicians can accomplish. It was easier in the studio, perhaps, but he's done that on stage for decades!

@The Beatles Saying Paul isn't even close to George is a guitarist is just false. While George is definitely the better player( that's why he was the lead guitarist), it's interesting to note that two of the most technical guitar solos (Taxman and Good Morning Good Morning) are both played by Paul.
As for the bass, Paul was by FAR the best bassist of the group. Don't get me wrong, John's bassline on Helter Skelter fits the song very well, but if you listen to the isolated track, it just sounds terrible and out of time. I don't even need to bring up how bad the bass is on The Long and Winding Road. George was better than John at bass, but nowhere near Paul.
As for being a multi-instrumentalist, Paul was/is of the greatest bassists ever, an excellent guitarist, a very proficient keyboardist and drummer, as well as being able to play a number of other instruments moderately well. The same cannot be said for the others.

I think the thing that really separates Paul’s lines from his contemporaries is that he was a guitar player initially but when the Beatles formed he got delegated to bass because John was frontman and George was better than him at guitar, so he took his melodic instincts from guitar and applied them to the bass instead of just thumping along on the root. You listen to tracks like this and Taxman and even some of their early stuff like Eight Days a Week or Help! and it’s clear that Paul is one of the most influential bass players of all time for what we could call the “melodic bass player”

This is one of the reasons why i love the band so much. While none of them were the most skillful or the most technical of musicians, all 4 had an element to their playing that is so exquisitely them.
Paul’s bass playing is so catchy and melodic and its rarely ever the same between verses. John was to me one of the best rhythm guitarist to ever lived, his chord choices and arrangement are so interesting and the notes he chooses for the 7th really adds depth to his guitar playing. George’s guitar sound is recognizable especially in the later years, with the slide and the beautiful lead parts, its a shame that he couldnt write All Things Must Pass with the rest. Last but not least, Ringo... always getting meme’d for being a bad drummer, his work with A Day in the Life and Rain speaks for itself. His playing complemented the styles of the rest so well as if he wraps them up.

Take a listen to All My Loving.... very simple melody, but what would that be without his walking baseline? It counters, lifts and supports the melody. And in the process, bits includes Carl Perkins riffs, and he even flubs one note. But still, brilliance!

    • @tomcusack884

The reason Paul played a Hofner was left-handed guitars and electric basses were hard to come by. The Hofner looks almost identical played left-handed. He took a right handed bass and did simple alterations to the nut and bridge and it didn't look awkward--like Jimi Hendrix playing a right-handed Fender Strat left handed.
McCartney played on a Fender Jazz bass for awhile.
McCartney likes to play bass with more treble rather than bottom-end punch. The Rick 4001 and Jazz bass do that quite well.

There could have been some possible Guitar and Snare Drum overdubs in the "Isolated Bass track" itself. Which could be the reason why it sounds Underwater in most parts in the track. The makers of the Rock band game had access to the Original Four track master tape recordings and they tried their best to isolate each instrument they could.
