    It's interesting to see how the Seleucid history plays out much the same as that of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) history, albeit in a much narrower timeframe. Focused around a heartland (in this case, Syria, notably Antiochia) it's history is one of a huge stretch of land in gradual decline, with a stubborn core holding out till the last with sporadic outflows (conquests in this case). Whereas the Byzantines inherited the eastern lands ruled from Constantinople, seperated forever from it's Western counterpart after the fall of Romulus Augustus and Ravenna, Seleukos inherited Alexander's portion through scheming and infighting, and both proved too great a stretch of land to maintain indefinitely.

      They are linked together. The Seleucid Empire played a leading role in the Hellenization of the East. Byzantium was the cut-off of the Hellenized East from the Latinized West.

    I love how in sync this music is with the state of the Empire, it sounds kind of like an elephant walking. It starts of with hope rising as Seleucus I Nikator gains territory and peaks just as the Empire reaches it's territorial maximum. It then plods along for a while and then starts to sound desperate and hopeless until Antiochus III gets in power where the music becomes hopeful once more and start to climax. Then the seleucid Roman wars happen and it's just a downhill slide from there

    Didn't Euthydemus become a vassal of Antiochus after his anabasis? Giving all of his elephants to him and taking his daughter in marriage for his son (like Diodotus before), certainly seems so. It wasn't until after Magnesia that the Bactrians revolted/ declared independence again.
    Also, Antiochus IV took control of Cyprus and was crowned in Memphis which wasn't in the video (even for a little bit).
    Lastly, most evidence points to Eucratides being a cousin or uncle to Antiochus and his seizure of Bactria from the Euthydemids was orders under Antiochus, Eucratides then acted as a vassal/ sub-king to Antiochus (Bactrian coins start featuring Seleucid symbols and the parade at Daphne along with Antiochus' title of Savior of Asia points to his successful retaking of Bactria to the empire).
    It was only after Antiochus' death that Eucratides decided not to acknowledge Demetrius I and rule as a sole king.

    • @CostasMelas
      @CostasMelas  4 года назад +2

      Thank you for the comment. The status It is not clear due to very sparse and fragmentary sources. Bactria seems to have independent action before Magnesia, at least from 200-195 BC when it started to expand in the central Asia, even in the areas that were controlled by the Seleucids. According to another reading, after the failed siege of Bactria, Antiochus recognised Euthydemus as King and he secured just an alliance with Euthydemus.

    Is it accurate to say, whoever came and invaded Iran/Persia they started to fight with their blood brothers in other lands? 1. Seleucid Greeks fought with Ptolemaic Greeks and Antigonid Greeks, 2. Abbassid Arabs fought with Ummayid Arabs, 3. Seljuk, Khwarazmid, Ghaznavid Turks fought with Indian and Anatolian Turks.
    Why is that? How come Seleucids, Abbassids, Alevis, Seljuks, Khwarazmid, and Ghaznavids they all became heavily Persianized/Iranized that they fight their own brothers in blood and culture?

    • @Ad-ek3kg
      @Ad-ek3kg 2 года назад +1

      At the time back than there was no such a thing called cultural brotherhood. So they fought for their interests for example Seljuks fought with Ghaznavids to have some land because they were under pressure of Non-Muslim Turks also Abbasids fight with Umayyads to control the caliphate. So why they allied with non-Arabs mostly is because Umayyads pressuring non-Arab Muslims(they were kind of Arab nationalist) and non-Arabs was majority in the empire but later they competed with Persians and lied on Turks to protect the balance. For Turks who became Persianized this was their own choice. When they came to Iran they acknowledge Persian and Arabic culture as the best cultures so they themselves assimilated into that culture. Same happened with Mongols and other Turkic peoples too(both in China and Iran) but i cant talk for Greek era because i dont know that much.

      2. "Abbasids fight with Umayyads to control the caliphate": Not only that. They named their capital (their most important city), Baghdad. Baghdad is not JUST a Persian name, but ALSO a Perso-Zoroastrian name. That is what I call heavily Persianized Abbassids.
      3. "Seljuks fought with Ghaznavids to have some land": They could unite with Turkish-speaking people, and Invade even more lands together. We know that Turks were really powerful soldiers. Why did NOT do that? Simple. Because they were admiring Persian culture and were heavily Persianized.
      4. "non-Arabs was majority in the empire": That is not true buddy. Look at the map. You will realize Iranians were/are ALWAYS the minority, and Persian are even less than whole Iranians in population and geography.
      Its the culture my friend, the CULTURE which stood strong and won the admiration of the invaders. Teacher Zarathustra, King Cyrus, King Darius, Teacher Mani, Poet Ferdowsi, Poet Hafez, Poet Khayyam, and Poet Rumi (and this continual elegant river) are enough for any invading force to admire Iran and get Iranianized. ;) RESPECT!

      @@nomesa7374 Actually i never said they did not assimilate themselves in Persian culture so why you focused on that i dont understand.
      1.Tribalism is not the same with nationalism they only care their tribes and they can fight with another tribe from same nation due to their interests this happened a lot.(Turkic tribes at the battle of manzikert or pre Islamic Arabia or pre Islamic Berberic tribes or Gassanids and Lakhmids and even the collapse of Sasanian empire has same reason you can add more) so i agree there was tribalism but not at the level of nationalism
      2.Yes and let me add sth more to that they have viziers from Bermek family(which sent viziers also to Sasanians since first years of empire) Also they had garden architecture of Chehar Bagh which is very basic form of Iranian garden architecture there are many Iranian scholars who are highly regarded in Sunni Islam like Hanafi and Gazali they are the real designers of Shia Islam before them it was just a political issue but later it also became more political at the same time more cultural thing but because Iranians this much effective in Islamic world they started to compete with Abbasids to take the control of the govt. So yes Abbasids effected from Iran however when that became issue to their throne they got closer to Turks to protect balance thats what i told.
      3. Thats not about being Persianized i also told you that they both are Persianized but main reason was Seljuks were interested in finding new lands for their animals and Iran was Shia while Ghaznavids were Sunni and heavily regarded by the caliph because of Mahmud of Ghazni and his son Masud also Abbasids were under pressure of Fatimids and Buyids so they attacked on Shias and this made them regarded in Muslim world at the same time they had chance to go into Anatolia which is more fertile than Iran also why they couldnt get united is also not about Persianized but about sectarian divisions and all wanted to achieve similar interests by their own family/tribe this was same with Beyliks of Anatolia after the Sultanate of Rum they all wanted to be leader but with their own families.
      4.Well there were actually more Iranians than Arabs today their population is abnormally more but the time back then it was not like that i cant see your 4. Argument so yeah i am finishing it here.

      amazing story brother, the word "Seluc" is currently Greek or Iranian? not for nothing Ptolemy (the incest in the royal family by the myth of Isis) and Seleucus were the most open to the natives of the successor kingdoms, but correct me if I am wrong, the majority of the empire's elites in religion did not remain Hellenic? for the worship of Seleuch as a god descended from Apolo, after his death it was common among the elites. They kept Greek culture as much as the Iranian, that shows in their coins as in their buildings and armies?. They fell not only because of military defeats but because the Greek monarch's form of government that required of military success, and because in the early kingdoms several generals had rebelled, the Seleucid dynasty kept military power closed to them, but at the same time making them prone to war internal among the successors to the throne, which weakened them against foreigners and with few generals to send to monitor, impose order and protect the empire, was difficult to respond to enemy incursions? Or only with the satraps they already fulfilled the functions of governors and generals in their territory? What about is studied in Iran when it about the management of foreigners in the country such as the Hellenic-Mongol-Turkish-Arab rulers?

    • @KeyhaneBishomar
      @KeyhaneBishomar 4 года назад +3

      @@mariano98ify well your story is true, but there is one difference subject in Iranian history, the culture, its known to be the richest culture of all times, including complexity in every aspect that builds up a culture. Iran ,Afghanistan, tajikistan, pakistan and India are the only countries today that gone true massive invasions and destructions and yet has kept it anccestors languages and culture and art despite being conquered by 5 of the greatest empires of all times, cities being destroyed to the dust, people being brutally killed and yet the language and culture remained almost the same as 3000 years ago. The greeks who migrated to persia are estimated to been arround 2 milions, most of them being of wealthier greek families of the greek world or of nobel warriors. Most of them settled on the cities which been rebuilt or over built by the greek conquerors of persia known as "Alexandria" being called "Eskanderie" there were about 7 cities with this name established in asia by the greeks, 4 of them being located in Persia (Iran, afghanistan' pakistan, tajikistan) and also many coties built during the selecuide rule being called "solukie" these people brought greek culture with them, and the cities they settled were already populated by the natives ,but is said that the greek population of these towns and cities were more than the natives, these greeks slowly adopted the native culture and language, while sharing their culture with the natives, im Iranian and i have studied alot the ancient culture of Iran, the art, the potry and the customs. What i found is that greeks have had allt influence in persian warfare, specialy the early parthians have had alot greek in them, they also adopted greek alphabets and greek was their secondary official language.modern farsi has alot greek tonality in it, if you study ancient persian you hear less vocals, sounds almost like bricks, if you know what i mean, but the sasanian and parthian persian became much more softer, the greek language also effected the persian poetry, one of the unique things about poetry is that its like a river, its built of more vocals. For example the word "Árt-ákh-sh-ery" in ancient persian means archery ,but in moder parsi its known as "Áráshy" or the name "kh-shā-yer-kh-shaă" which is Xerxes king and today its said like this "Khá-shā-yār-shā"
      Other things persians adopted from greek helenism were heroic sports, in parsi you call them "Páhlavāni" meaning championy/art of courage sports ,idk to expalne it better, if you know about ancient greek epics, and legends, thats pretty much the same, you practice your mind and soul and muscles together to raise your currage and bravery and your trust in your soul and in the soul of the nature arround you.
      There are 3 of these sports in Iran which two of them are direct descendant of those of ancient greeks, one is "Kûshti" and the other is "Kámárgēri" being wrestling and belt wrestling. The last one is called "Wárzesh-Zur-khānei" meaning "the powerhouse training" was a mix a kind of ancient Indo-Iranian dance and acrobatics traditions inflected by greek wrestling habits, this sport is only practiced only across the persian and azerbaijani lands on western Asia.
      There are infact no traces of any greek custom adoptation in Persia, and i belive the greeks adopted alot more of persian customs and lifestyle, for example the marriage tradition we all know arround the world originated in ancient Persia, and perhapse even older than Persia from the region (India or messopotamia)
      The greeks after the fall of macedonian empires started to look alot like the persians in customs, in such way that when you look at south east europians of middle ages they looked exactly like those of persians and indians of the time.
      Greek language lasted in persia intill arround the fall of khwarazmian empire, it was practiced as a source of a knowledge, allowed the people to be able to study older scripts and tablets and books of the classical era, just like many of modern scholars of the world who study german and french to be able to study older sources.
      In modern Farsi we have about 70-80 words which have greek rooths, and still used today although most of the Iranians do not know about them.
      In general Greek helenism effected the persian culture and probably completed it, if you ask me, and the persian culture which greeks adopted also completed them. What ever it did it just bound us closer together as nations, and today when i travel to europe the only country that feels like home to me is Greece, it smells like Iran, the nature of the mountains is alot similar, they undrestand eachothers jokes and facial expressions unlike anyother other nation in europe.
      Lastly im going to answer your question (sorry for explaining too much)
      The iranian culture and language always dominated its homeland no matter how brutal the conquerors been, and it always repaired itself in the history, it usually keep the good parts of a forner culture (expect forced islamic habits) and it will do it again, it its just the identity of the nation. @@mariano98ify happy to hear you too! well i dont agree with chinese or egypt, rich culture isn't same as having ancient buildings on place, culture is about the people of a country about the identity, the lifestyle, the language, the ceremonies, the beliefs, the gods and the heroes, i know why you tell that, becouse you perhapse are more fascinated about traditional architecture rather than cultures. Anyways ,good to talk to you.
      Edit:
      I can not agree on china, becouse china isn't older than Persia.
      I can't agree on egypt, even though i practically should, but Egyptian culture is long gone, they speak arabic now, they dont practice their old traditional way of living.

      Actually parthians besides superiority of the iranian hegemony which before that superiority belonged to hellenism never wanted to change or Unrespected the greeks or macedons(hellenisation)they just rebirth iranian empire and restore it and start the iranization besides other cultures,they were just like cyrus the great,respecting all nations and cultures,alexander wants to be another cyrus the great but he don’t be that successful and Seleucids were foreigners after all ,so i think Arsacids Parthians actually done the best multicultural multinational and united mixture of east and west and were democratic and established the cyrus the greats legacy but ardeshir papakan replaced this legacy with usual nationalization in other words,parthians were true successors of cyrus the great and Sassanids were the religious empire forgot that human united legacy.maybe one of the reasons were Roman Empire and so many other reasons which ended the 500 years great full Arsacids Parthian empire.

      This comment doesnt make sense. The biggest reason that large empires tend to collaspe is from the pure diveristy of people's inside of it, like the Austro-Hungarian Empire did. Why? Beecause diversity strenghtens instability and instability weakens an empire's national identity. And of course every kind of political entity needs a national identity, in order to survive, because having a national identity means that people will actually try and defend or expand the political entity, instead of striving for indepedence for their culture group. Multicultiralism in large empires and in general is a recipe to disaster and is a product of misinformation of our times, largely spread due to the fact that people simply believe whatever they like and not the truth.
