That’s an oldie but a goodie! You might have too much draft at the pilot because you have the front cover open. Once the cover is back in place the pilot flame should sit still and any draft should be directed around behind it. Thermocouple was probably bad like you said, you should be able to light the pilot through the inspection window once the cover is on.
Have one of these heater mine is 40 years old . Your right about the front cover and the flame, mine still has the glass site glass so I have to pull the front off. Just on those super windy day it can blow out .
Customer will have a difficult time getting the siding people back to investigate the duct work. I would try to light the pilot through the inspection port as mentioned.

There is a lot less draft when you lite it through the site glass. You can twist the wing nuts to remove that small cover. There might be instructions on the cover ?

The original post was right about it being drafty because the cover is off, allowing a cross-flow of air that can't happen if the cover is on. It is a direct vent heater that has the intake and exhaust in a concentric outside vent. I feel sorry for the siding guy that is going to look bad to the customer even though it isn't his fault.
On those old Direct Vent room heaters you would sometimes have to hang your jacket over the vent termination until you had the pilot cleaned up and running and the doors put back on. Then take you jacket off of the vent and turn the main burner on. Maybe go back and give it a try again. You'll be a hero for your customer. What you have there is normal.
Steve I bet when they did the siding they didn't get the inside pipe fastened correctly. Could also be the inside pipe is rotted out and it's recirculating.
I don’t believe there was anything wrong with that unit. The pilot was blowing around erratically because you had that access panel off. That was an abnormal operating condition.. That’s what was causing the huge draft. The only problem there was the thermocouple and you nailed it. If you had put the panel back on, you would have seen a normal pilot. The vent terminal looked perfectly okay. And I’m not an internet troll, I’m a 47 year retired gasman.
These are Direct-Vent heaters that are the easiest way to add heat to an old building. All you need is a gas line and to cut a 9" hole in the wall. The more expensive units have a fan that helps circulate the air in the room, they are very efficient. I have never seen this exact model before but it is clearly good build quality.
The old ones are easy to keep going. The new stuff has too many components that are unreliable and cost too much to replace. And that is IF you can still get the parts.
Pretty sure that panel hanging below the unit is supposed to be a draft damper…the exhaust I think is ok…unless it has a thermostatic damper in the exhaust which would still be a problem with the heater…
With today's high gas prices, high efficiency is a nice way to reduce heating costs and reduce reliance on foreign supplies. Blame the manufacturers for making systems which aren't reliable. Much more complicated systems than high efficiency heaters have proven to be highly reliable. But everyone wants to shop by price alone so would a very reliable high efficiency system sell against junk foreign units?
@@flyer617 You are right. High efficiency units WILL save you money on your gas bill but the saves stop right there. If you look beyond that, the cost of the repairs negate any gas savings. Variable speed motors, duel fuel valves, duel heat exchangers are all added bullshit that the manufactures must add because of higher standards the government is mandating. Don't believe me ? Look up the price of any of the parts I mentioned but i know you won't.

@@flyer617 What are you talking about? The formerly "good domestic brands" are made with parts in China and Mexico, the units I see are failing often within 2 years of being installed. I am replacing components left and right on newer units while the older units just need a cleaning and/or simple inexpensive repairs.
It would be nice if you could find 1950s quality on anything built today. It is sad to see how cheap and unreliable things have become. Everything made now is junk within a few years and won't last much more than a decade at best.

Could be it was put in on prevailing wind side of house? or like this guy said, it's pulling more air into house b/c cover is off.

That old unit would outlast anything on the market today. Hasn't been serviced in 40 years still running like a champ.
Had to replace the blower motor on mine but is still going over 40 years .

I've seen wall heaters, but I've never seen or heard of wall heaters that have the same mechanism placement as a wall unit air conditioner.

It is a direct vent unit. The combustion air and exhaust both enter and exit through a concentric outside vent.
No indoor air is used for combustion.
Do you not work on newer stuff? 90% boilers??
