Looks nice. That's what I've been doing with my handles, scrape the varnish, burn, then boiled linseed oil. Well done!

Watch how much heat you put to the steel if ut gets too hot you will either remove or alter the temper wich can result in a fragile edge or microscopic crachs that could make tge axe head completely fail in time one rule of thumb i use is as long as you can touch it for 5 seconds its not to hot if you cant pur a little water on it
