I’d keep the bathtub and bathroom size as it is, and put the kitchen where the bedroom is now, and then have a sleeping and living area with windows. In a small apartment it’s nice to be able to come home and have a relaxing bath after a stressful day.
Really smart work... but practically speaking, even with the improvements this space with a young child will feel like a massive compromise, and will feel chaotic really fast. Seems like a case of just because you can envision it, and do it, doesn't necessarily mean you should. You're most likely better off holding onto the space as a rental, or selling tbh.

@@jay6440 I was looking for someone to notice this. There is really no space for privacy, nor for kids to play. This can work for babies but when you have a teen this really wouldn't work out. @@jay6440 yes, this is so true. The last video of his I watched was his redesign of that couple’s apartment where he completely disregarded the woman’s (Lila’s?) requirements. It was a complete turn off.
@@jay6440 Totally agree. Putting knifes in the lower drawer? Totally unsafe for kids, unless you lock it up in some way. And he seems to love having microwave in a shelf above the counter. Also unsafe, and the shorter you are the more dangerous it is (so not for kids, and women are shorter on average).
28 m² is really not a lot of room - for one person it might be comfortable. Alright even if you have guests stay over. For two people it will become cramped if you don't have outside areas - like a garden or balcony. For three it won't work for long - when the baby gets older the things it owns will get bigger and you also need places to play. And the adults will need a place of their own to work, read... it doesn't need to be big and even can double as a guest room - but I don't think less then 50 m² will work for 3 people in the long run.
Nitpicks I noticed: -No window in the "master" -The bed is cornered, so one sleeping on the inside cannot safely get down without waking up the other -All guests need to cut through the sleeping area to use the bathroom -Wardrobe would not be closed religiously to prevent cooking/food smells on clothing
This is wild, I'm convinced you could turn a utility cupboard into a home after this one! PS, the office design is coming along slowly but surely - IKEA Aus doesn't have the Voxtorp doors I need to complete the office yet, but looking forward to sending you some 'after' pics soon. Keep it up DT, this content is FANTASTIC!
Also, this redesign still heavily focuses on max. 2 people actively living here. A child's cot/small bed with room to put the kid to bed and not knock your head/sacrifice your living area at night would be unmanageable with time ;) Love the design though, so smart!
I've always had this question because I want to do the same at my kitchen: does placing the oven and stove just beside the fridge affect the cooling system of it? Does it make it less efficient or more energy consuming?
These design process videos are interesting, but as someone who has spent time living in studio space like this in London… i feel like most of the renders in this series add a sense of order to rooms but don’t really actually create any more space. A lot of it feels like an illusion of space based on the camera clipping through one of the walls or placed above or beyond the floor plan (rather than a viewpoint set “in” it with a presence) + idealised digital lighting conditions. This room and its objects would feel cramped with a person actually navigating it. So I’d be interested to see the series progress to actually putting these plans in motion, and seeing how it translates to reality.
Hey Matthew, this is a really good point as developers/designers are known for "augmenting" visuals like you mentioned. This isn't something that I personally agree with and the renders of this project are taken as photos from the inside - but you're completely right in saying that a rendered flythrough would be helpful in proving this... 🤔 Somthing to work towards... Would consider making the wardrobe accessible from the bathroom? I always find that I get changed to and from the bathroom and put my dirty clothing in the washing machine
This design is SIMS-worthy. As an architect you might give some consideration to the safety and ergonomics. F.e., the high-elevated bed needs additional ventilation for a good sleep so close to the ceiling, especially in summer. The "kids area" under is beyond ugly - there is no natural light there (and still no ventilation)! So you have a room for a sofa and a projector but your kids are pushed under bed in place of the old bags? If anything, the kid shoudl accupy that area by the window and the movie to move to where sun does not shine, i.e. the underbed. After all, the projector requires darkness. I coukd go on on your redesign but the point is: you do not do justoce to your arhitectural skills (supposing you really have those). You plan and think as a decorator, not an architect. No offense, but you should realize some people might actually adopt some of your not so healthy designs to much discomfort of them and their wallets. Hope you will improve on this.
Why isnt a a foldaway mattress like a shikibuton considered is western architecture? The Japanese, Chinese, Indians and most other non western cultures have almost always done mixed purpose main rooms with fold away mattresses for sleeping. Seems like the most efficient use of space when constrained.
Who wants to sleep with the ceiling that low and no space on the sides to easily make the bed? Who wants to potentially stumble down the *staircase boxes* if they could have a regular bed instead? It's not an elegant solution in my opinion.
Gorgeous! But idk about the project screen. Tv is something that we watch so often, i think it would get old quickly to have to raise and lower it every single time
Hi Daniel - I love your channel and the redo series so much. Your are a genius at spatial relationships!!! But I have to say this one didn't do it for me. I feel the changes made were not necessarily for the better and although lots of function, the space feels like half the size of previously. Seems like this would create a much more open feeling. Sometimes adding everything yields the opposite of your intent. Dedicated viewer. Thanks.
One thing you could do is use a marine table base for the dining room table. Basically it's a single adjustable height metal tube that installs in a base that is screwed to the floor. and supports the table top (they use it on boats). There's a lever to adjust the height so you could have the table top at a standard dining height of 30" but then raise it to counter height for extra prep surface. Also, with one center base you have three less table legs to bump into.
Changing sheets and daily making the bed is hard enough when the bed is in a corner, I can only imagine how hard it woul be smacked into two corners and so high up...I would put the bathroom next to the kitchen on the back wall and free the rest of the space to plan a nice living room, a Murphy bed can solve the issue of the sleeping area for everyday use very nicely...

Very nice redesign of yours' old apartment. I was wondering if adding a little sliding/folding windowish thing in the wall between kitchen and bedroom wouldn't be nice? It could provide some natural light to that area which that part is lacking.
Poor baby near no fresh air, but smells of kitchen and bathroom. The money they paid in Manhattan, they could have brought a real house in a different borough of NYC, like Staten Island. Sure, Manhattan is exciting but not good for a baby to have no real fresh air when resting ...Insanity.
Yeah did you ask your wife what it’s like to be a teenage girl sleeping underneath their parents. Family bed is awesome open till ten-ish Depending on the child I know that because I did family bed. Also ask her about a teenage girls need for clothing space. I always thought that that was unnecessary and stupid but my daughter does not feel the same. Don’t fix it up sell it a lot of people like giant bathrooms in giant kitchen I don’t know why. Or have your parents move in there can you take their house! :-)
Although I find This redesign quite nice, I can't overlook one big mistake - entrance to the bathroom (the only bathroom) from the 'master' bedroom/kid's room/office. Not very user-friendly solition, as someone would be constantly bothered by others going to and from the bathroom.
This is a necessary compromise. It is partially negated by the fact that the child’s space would have a door to seal it from the rest of the circulation.
You never put oven next to fridge as its not safe...heat from oven damaging cooling system offridge freezer or cause that they work too hard and food will spoil or have frost bites ..... its in manuals (at least in EU).
The whole time I am trying to imagine this is an apartment for a single unmarried person (plus his GF who has her own place as well). But a young family... not so much.
I don’t think flammable coats should be stored right next to the water heater. Why not an on demand water heater to save space? I mean we are dreaming right? Not a fan of the loft style bed for 2 people. All in all very nice
Well you may not go ahead with it but this video was value enough for budding architects and interior designers alike to watch you go through the design process :)
Unless there's another door that I'm not seeing, it looks like guests would have to walk through your bedroom to get to the bathroom? That seems... less than ideal.
I’d keep the bathtub and bathroom size as it is, and put the kitchen where the bedroom is now, and then have a sleeping and living area with windows. In a small apartment it’s nice to be able to come home and have a relaxing bath after a stressful day.

Very nice. How disappointing for you that you couldn’t fit in a YT-friendly workspace. (Or, rent out part of it?) See you in the next one.
Only partway thru but that kitchen design removes all joy from cooking. So disappointed that this minimalist design lacks heart.
You never put oven next to fridge as its not safe...heat from oven damaging cooling system offridge freezer or cause that they work too hard and food will spoil or have frost bites ..... its in manuals (at least in EU).
This is the first time I dn get short of breath watching a tiny space be remodeled. They usually feel like coffins to me. 👍🏻
I wouldn’t mind you giring my 54m2 apartment in Copenhagen an overhaul like that, to ser what is possible.. 😊
The whole time I am trying to imagine this is an apartment for a single unmarried person (plus his GF who has her own place as well). But a young family... not so much.
DANIEL: Am being approached by SCAMMERS on YOUR Feed. PLEASE attend to. Thanks!
I don’t think flammable coats should be stored right next to the water heater. Why not an on demand water heater to save space? I mean we are dreaming right? Not a fan of the loft style bed for 2 people. All in all very nice
I love the design but I couldn’t live with a kitchen where there was no pantry to put food items in and no cupboards for plates, bowls and glasses.
Better for a bachelor ❤️🥰
Well you may not go ahead with it but this video was value enough for budding architects and interior designers alike to watch you go through the design process :)
Great video! Just wondering about the master bed room. How stable is it? I'm already 90kgs
Woooow this is amazing video.
Pls can you link me the program app of 3d modeling house you use on video!?
Sorry I'm late. I think you need to add fence (?) beside the bed. I'm afraid someone falling when sleep there
Where will the baby sleep?
Unless there's another door that I'm not seeing, it looks like guests would have to walk through your bedroom to get to the bathroom? That seems... less than ideal.
Why a murphy-bed and a sofa, instead of a sofa bed?
No mirrors to bounce light and create the illusion of more space?
I love the flexible redesign Daniel. I am a fan of flexible spaces. Brilliantly done! Great to have one decent sized space for general living. G Ire
I have an apartment that needs this sort of work. I’d love to know how much this all cost.
I find this interesting but I honestly prefer the original layout. It feels less boxy
