I love sage green too with white that create eco-Scandinavian look. Especially in spaces like kitchen, this combination creates the vibe of freshness and spaciousness!
I totally agree with you.I redid my kitchen last summer, totally gutted the space, I am fortunate to have the space to have a prep bowl/sink for cleaning fresh produce and a large sink for big roasting pans, if I did not have the space I would have given up cupboard and counter space for the big sink.
Agreed! Serious home chefs appreciate those deep pot sinks, but also think Vivian has a point sometimes you just want a little sink too! I have the luxury of a scullery that can house my industrial sized sink, and in the main kitchen a smaller sink for rinsing veg
Next to my sink there is a place designed to put your air dry plate rack, but I'm sure you can use it for your fruits and veggies because the water will drip down back in the sink.
I love this! Though I think the wider cabinets above the range were a bit distracting. Going with 60cm wide cabinets the whole way would have lined the vertical lines up with the ones below. Also, the cabinets not going to the ceiling only works with the aeathetic if the wall behind is the same colour as the cabinets, and the tops don't end up getting filled with plastic cups and bags of flour, haha.
Time to get yourself a pen and paper and start spilling your ideas out! it doesnt matter if your drawings look nice or are precise - with the vision in your head and those drawings on your table you will declutter your brain you will see how easy it is to get started and make your home YOUR home again. Happy designing!
I love the space you've created. However, having a sink on the island is one of my pet peeves. Having the sink in line with the stove and having a bare island would've been much nicer.
that would mean moving the range as well, including all the lines connected to it, needing additional work and cost. and you need 15"-18" of clearance minimum on both sides of the range and sink so you can place stuff beside them. placing them all in a single line would reduce countertop real estate. the sink itself would use 2 out of the 5 counter cabinets, placed on the left side close to the fridge. so the range would have to be placed in the middle of the remaining three or have 15-18" wall clearance. overall it will result in a cramped galley kitchen with a bare island. Also note that two people would be using that kitchen at the same time, so one can focus on using the sink while the other on the cooktop. Vivian's complaint about drips on the floor are mitigated by the linoleum floor which is easy to clean.
Hello Mr. Titchener. Hope you and your family are well. I recently had my kitchen redone and will probably update my appliances since my cabinets are minimalist and I love the look. Your design ideas are great and thank you for sharing them with us.
The color switching at the end really blew me away with how easily the tone of the kitchen changed with a few color changes in the cabinetry! Really helpful in giving more examples for me to enjoy!
It's worth mentioning: Moving plumbing becomes expensive. With a baby coming, getting rid of the dishwasher is a terrible choice. That fridge model will never sit flush with the wall, you only get that look with very expensive fridges with special articulating door hinges. Separate cooktop and oven layouts, while much nicer looking, are NOT cheaper than an all in one slide in range appliance. Straddling a double basin sink over the cabinet frame is an interesting decision that plumbers will hate. Also washing awkwardly shaped cookware is way easier in one large deep single basin sink. A clean design for sure, but not really fully considering the client's needs in this video.
As an architect, this is a bit of a disaster. There is no dishwasher [a bit of a problem], and the sink on the island is a no no: water splash central everywhere! The only case where there might be a sink on an island is when the owner has the funds for cleaning staff. You could have placed the dishwasher on the island, taking advantage of the existing plumbing. But what concerns me most is that this kitchen shows in no way any consideration for the Frankfurt triangle [stove-sink-worktop]. The linearity in this kitchen does not really work that well.
Hey Daniel, just wanna know was there a consideration for the backsplash? Love that you remove the cabinets, it really opened up the space. It's true that corner cabinets are actually quite wasteful, but I think a corner bi-folding door might work as well, but each space to their own. Hope to see more great stuff from you!
I know you make it look it look super easy in each episode, but I know how much work you must put in for each of these designs. I absolutely love watching the transformations though- hopefully we will get to see updates on the spaces irl soon too!
Interesting to feature some of the differences between north American and UK kitchen designs. I wonder if you considered running the kitchen cabinets in the other direction? Would there have been enough space to have the counters under /between the windows with a table on the open side? Also, I am not a breakfast bar fan - do people really need two sitting spaces immediately adjacent to one another? Especially when the bar seating is near the splash and dirty dishes that are normally piled around the sink. I like the clean look of the finished product, but wonder home much storage was given up? Most of us have all our cupboards full, even if they are not easily accessible. And, sorry, screaming babies? Mine never did! Did you make any accommodation for high chair and baby supplies (bibs, toys, unbreakable cups and dishes...) Personally, I think all the lower storage should be drawers. I like the bin system, but I would need one for trash, one for compost, and likely two for recycling. I like the frig tucked away, but does it need airflow for the heat it gives off? You didn't say if you stayed on budget; did you? It would be nice to see an after shot of the actual kitchen following the renovation to see how they adapted your ideas to their space.
beautiful kitchen! Husband and I both cook. Hence, from experience, may I suggest that the sink and stove be on the same side and that the sink be close to the fridge. The island could be detached, so that people can walk around from either side to get to the stove, while the other person can get to the fridge and sink at the same time. Hi from Japan!
I would actually use fake would laminate. Linoleum is a trash material here in the US and doesn't do well in some climates, but the wood-mimicking version is actually quite nice looking, durable, adapts to most climates well and is inexpensive. It also looks incredibly premium despite the low price. I used to do contracting with my father and I'm so upset I can't get the same product in the EU for the flat I'm remodeling with my wife before I move. 😔
This is a good layout that improves the space for two, but I wish we could've moved the sink elsewhere not in the small island since it's normally seen as a bad thing in asian culture to have a stove and your sink opposite of each other because it promotes "restless" energy. But in terms of practical use, I think you did a great job because it improves the flow of how the kitchen is used.
Having the sink and stove separated is not allowed according to the building code in my country. Both have to be on the same "plane". For safety reasons. Good safety reasons, I might add. Please don't do it, you're asking for trouble.
You never want required plumbing or electrical (sink, stove, etc.) in an island. As families grow and change this gives zero ability for the kitchen to adapt with them. It would have been better to put the sink, dishwasher and stove on the back wall and allow the bar and storage to be in a mobile island. This way it could pushed out of the way when needed. It simply makes the space more versatile.
It looks pretty good... But the storage of the pantry has gone, and when you place the electric oven, bread toaster, air fryer and the other electrodomestic appliances that appeared in the first photos... You will have less working surface and it won't look so awesome.
I usually like your videos, but this one left me disappointed for a few reasons: 1. I think there was a very large missed opportunity to extend the kitchen (or at least the storage) into the dining area. The small walls between the dining and family room could have been removed to allow these functions to shift a bit. 2. If they are cooking restaurant quality meals they likely want a gas range, which you have removed. 3. In keeping with point #1- allowing the same flooring to flow through the family space, the dining area and kitchen would have made all three spaces seem larger and more cohesive. 4. That's not an island, it's a peninsula.
I’d like to add I HATE when cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling… such a wasted opportunity for storage, Especially when these “gourmet” meals are being made.. & now they’ve lost their pantry..
Magnetic Induction cooktops are professional grade and have better heat control than gas. Gas is also being outlawed in many cities in the US as it pollutes your indoor air quality and gas homes have higher rates of asthma in children.
Absolutely love this series! you killed it yet again!! It can be hard to imagine a different space in your own home, so seeing ideas like these really help. Keep up the amazing work Daniel!
At first i thought this one's cool, but then i remembered i'm anything but minimalist. People described "cooking on a daily restaurant level food" which by default means they have various size pots and pats, gadgets , bits and bobs for various reasons. And they loose on storage capacity in this design. Personally i would not know where to keep pet food in there. Bottom cabinets would be taken by mixers, food processor, grill and such Edit: I am aware that people who submitted their project, knew what to expect! I'm just saying Your style would not fit MY needs!! P.P.S. color combo from the thumbnail is prettiest!
they still have second pantry in the dining area - for things they don't use that often might be a good storage. Also - if they need extra room they could adjust this project, for example adding: shallow cupboard in dining area (wall next to pantry) or open shelving above the island - on the wall next to window (for cups, glasess etc)... also: changing side of an island - choosing different sink and adding side cabinet (instead of that waterfall edge)... He said that instead of that barstools they can add storage if needed (cabinets that could be reached from dining area)
Thanks Daniel, for creating this series of redesigning spaces. I find all your videos highly inspiring and have lot to learn on how to make optimum use of small space, being an aspiring small space designer. Your designs are extremely detailed, practical and visually stunning! Please carry on sharing more!
I really feel you left out a key element here. Serious cooks need a lot of storage because they have more more pots and pans and food. I would have added hanging cabinets over the island, which would be a good place for the microwave and other storage.
Am I the only one worried by the nightmare of moving the plumbing from the window to the island ? :) It looks like the typical mistake of the architects, here is a lovely design ... But you can't do it unless you tear apart all your floor, your plumbing, your electricity, your roof ... from scratch. It will be 50.000$, thank you sir
Exactly, I would encourage architects to have some hands on install experience or at least make friends with a design conscious contractor that can point out the complexities of seemingly simple design decisions.
This is the kind of left field question only a UK architect works ask, but, my PII policy explicitly excludes me doing work in the USA. Did you need to check with your PII provider before thanking this job on?
This is a great design, but as a passionate home cook I'd really like to make a case for valuing cupboard space. It makes a huge difference if you're the kind of cook with an enormous pantry. I have so many sauces/spices/dried goods etc because I cook across many cuisines (especially Asian, which you'll know uses a huge array of ingredients), and I always struggle to find flats with enough kitchen storage space to accommodate my collection. Sleek designs like this are beautiful, but I wonder if there's a way to maintain storage space without compromising on aesthetics.
I agree I also struggle to find enough room for storage particularly when you have allergies and cook from scratch beautiful kitchen to look at but not practical if you cant store what you need.
your content is great, I am a interior design student and these transformations are marvelous, so inspiring.. keep posting these makeovers please.. greetings from brazil btw
So how much is the final budget estimate? Not sure the pluming work for relocating a sink is in the budget. also induction cooktop need a unique type of power outlet thats also probably not there..
The cooktop and oven will be hardwired in without using a plug. If the feed for the old range is large enough, the NEC does have a formula to allow for the oven and cooktop to be treated as one appliance and be connected to the one circuit that was present for the old range.
IMHO, I would make all three rooms into a combined kitchen, dining, and family room!! Take out the bulkheads, recess the beam between the dining and living areas and take out those silly half walls that are making everything feel small and cramped!! You might even be able to get rid of the wall between the two pantries to make things feel even more open if that area is open to the hallway. I don't know what is outside the kitchen sink wall, but in the future, a glass slider or french doors would be great if it goes to the back yard of the house! In my opinion, a short counter on the island is a waste! I would put two cabinets back to back and depending on room, I would add an overhang of at least 15-20 inches so people can sit there and chat, use it as a dining table or a place for the growing kids to be in the same room playing while food is being cooked! I would use a huge square/rectangle countertop depending on keeping the dining table or not. The dining table could be moved more into the family room if you want to keep it. The island is a great idea, but too small and might be better sideways and moved into the dining area! If there is room, and to save money, you could have lower cabinets only all the way around and down the current sink wall. Upper cabinets could be added in the future as well as adding extra windows and exterior doors. The kitchen window is in a weird place with a different kitchen layout and another one or a very large new one doesn't have to be done now, but could be done in the future or the French doors. Mondustrial Maker here on youtube just completed an interesting kitchen/dining island layout in kind of a t-shape that might work, but his is huge! I think only working on the kitchen area is a waste of $. You are capable of doing all the demolition to save on costs and then just pay for putting it back together. Good luck! ** Edit! Make the kitchen, dining, family and living room into one space. There is so much room to spread out the kitchen, it's a shame not to put it all to good use!
I wish apartments had vent/microwave combos. Especially mine. I have a "studio" and litterally HALF of my usable space is taken up by my microwave. And it's a bug magnet since it's too cramped to thoroughly clean every night.
I love the new kitchen!!!! I really liked how you changed the colour of the cabinets to show how it looks if you don't want an all white kitchen. I just have a question, why did you leave the bulkhead? Did it house pipes, electrical work or something else that would be too costly to reposition?
Hi there Daniel, I've recently come across your channel and I absolutely love this Architect Redesigns series. I'm amazed by how much better things can be if some effort and planning goes into it. I especially am particularly drawn to the usage of architectural software to model and add changes to one's environment. I think a lot of people (myself included) would greatly appreciate a guide or a tutorial as to how exactly you use Sketch-up to model rooms and whatnot, along with using the Vray plugin and photoshop in the same way you do. I think a lot of people would benefit from this as they would be able to learn how to use these skills and apply them to their own unique scenario. Anyways, love the content and can't wait to see more.
From a US architect...in US kitchens, replumbing sinks, toilets and tubs could be prohibitively expensive, especially if there's a slab foundation with no basement. Venting (extractor fan) can be done very easily and cheaply, through the attic. The "bulkhead" is called a furr-down. Usually it is used to run HV/AC (central heating and air con) ductwork into different rooms. US homes have large refrigerators because most households grocery shop only once or twice a month. A pantry isn't optional, especially to a family that cooks. All your designs are creative and meticulous.
Love your videos; but white open concept kitchens are impractical. Spend an hour cleaning up the kitchen, make a well deserved cup of coffee, and it needs to be cleaned again. And if you don't clean it, you have to look at it. Also, IKEA stuff looks good, but after 4-5 years the enamel will buckle especially under the sink. I live in Sweden, all of the newer kitchen cabinets have this problem. The EU has stricter rules for what chemicals can be used in manufacturing, so it maybe the non-EU cabinets hold up better. The EU fridges made about 15 years ago had problems with the plastic cracking because BPA can't be used with anything that contacts food.
Interesting to see this was the first working with a US kitchen. Watching Daniel's first foray into country differences for kitchen design was fun. He makes good points, I wonder how actual use differs from perceived designer use in regards to these sorts of culture differences..
Great design once again! I'm really loving this series! I was wondering if you've considered a cooker with built in extractor fan? Smeg for instance do one. For a minimalist look and space saving they seem great, but I've yet to hear any experiences with them.
Hi, i have software technical questions. Do you render this scene using vray for sketch up on macbook pro? I use windows and really considering macbook for my interior work. Thanks for the great video
The color changes at the end were really great! Personally I would have preferred the sink on the back wall. I like to have it close to the stove and far from the table. But maybe that wasn’t possible because of the plumbing? Great content 👌
Are these United Kingdom pounds? I thought everything was in Euros? Dams annoying to translate into Cdn. dollars not being sure. And many converters no longer even provide pounds sterling...
The aesthetics have changed over the years, but this sort of cramped, inneficient before kitchen layout is such a common feature in low- to mid-end American homes. For as large as our homes are compared to Europe, I often find builder-grade apartments and houses here in the US to have such a thoughtless layout and poor material choices. They also tend to lean in way too hard to current aesthetic trends, making them age and look dated even 5-10 years after they are built. Love the ideas here. Probably because I am American...it wouldn't have occured to me to take out the U-shape to the cabinet layout. It's such a common feature in so many homes that I've lived in, or that people I knew had
1. the sink should be on the other side, next to the stove. but they do need to do a lot of replumbing either way…. 2. you did not take into account to make anything baby proof. that should have been a no brainer 🥴 3. i would have extended the kitchen cupboard to the ceiling. you wasted space the fridge in the pantry is nice, the cupboards above it too! white is beautiful. i think 20k is a huge budget and they could get more out of it.
I know an architect who designs tiny Air B&B homes. He said several have used IKEA cabinets and they work fine as long as you do not get them wet. The garbage/recycling center will always wear out first.
For the sink and trash cabinets it's important to caulk the cracks and seams with white silicone in case there is a plumbing or other leak. The cabinets last a long time if you don't get them wet. They also sell a foil diffuser sticker to protect cabinets and countertops from dishwasher steam. It all comes down to the installation details with IKEA kitchens.
I think the kitchen redesign looks so good. However personally I dislike the minimalist aesthetic. I don't like kitchens that are all white (I know you can change the cabinets up and stuff) but I'd love to see stonework backsplash that adds character and pretty tile floors. Like Spanish style tiles for example. I can see how some people like this aesthetic, but it's not for me
Love this video. Thinking of doing something similar to my home. One issue that we have though is that one wall that used to have a sink that is now empty...for us, we don't have a window there. We could put a window there but it would cost more and we would have some potential privacy issues. Any other thoughts on what you would do with this design if you didn't have the window there.
@1:40, too right we don't. Never understood the concept of the over the cooker microwave. Either have a built-in or worktop model. @5:04, slot in cookers are horrid. @5:46, not fake Shaker. One big sink is better than two. Overall, the redesigned kitchen was much better than the old.
I disagree with the sink design, as the double sink limits usage, and virtually any usage of the kitchen, including drying dishes in a rack, will set up an ugly barrier and mess up sight lines. I like the refrigerator idea, but putting the microwave below seems to waste good storage areas.
I love your videos and soon im getting married and i have a small space to turn to a small kitchen i tried ikea planner and im so out of ideas . Need HELP!!!!
Great design...the only change i would make is extend the island and have cabinets under the stools to compensate for the loss of the pantry storage...
i wouldve put a big vertical island in the centre of the room to combine the island and the dining table into one, creating continuity between kitchen and dining. this would also make the room walkable from all ends, instead of the corner being blocked off as it is with the current island.
Which colour was your favourite? I'm loving Sage Green recently!
How many have wrote to you the last week?
Blue 💙
I love sage green too with white that create eco-Scandinavian look. Especially in spaces like kitchen, this combination creates the vibe of freshness and spaciousness!
Same! It seems also easy to me to change decoration through time without getting bothered by the color
Black is always my favorite, most people are too afraid to try it!
As an M.Arch student, I thoroughly enjoy this series 🤝
So thrilled to hear this Jenna! Glad you're enjoying it!
I have found that a large deep sink is more practical than a double one.
I totally agree with you.I redid my kitchen last summer, totally gutted the space, I am fortunate to have the space to have a prep bowl/sink for cleaning fresh produce and a large sink for big roasting pans, if I did not have the space I would have given up cupboard and counter space for the big sink.
When I redid my kitchen, I also removed the double sink and opted for one large deep sink. It saves more counter space and it's much more convenient!

Did you use up the whole budget?
These videos are phenomenal, you basically create exactly what my brain wants to see in my own home

Great job. My only concern would be the cost of re-routing the plumbing for that island sink.
Also getting the garbage disposal
it will be awesome if the home owners check back in with photos of their renovation after they have been completed...
I've been loving this series (and also your other uploads), keep it up! 👏🏽
Honestly baffles me how you do this every time I watch a video. Great job
Thanks Harry! It means a lot to hear that! 🙏
Grey lino over wood floor, why 😭
I get so excited every time you upload one of these. Excellent work as always, Daniel; thank you for sharing!

For Feng Shui..sink can’t face to face to stove, it will bring bad energy to people who lives in there. Yin and Yang condition.

Ouf of curosity i would send my kitchen just to see how you would make it.
Such uninspired design, no interesting details, no interesting textures, cold and personality less. Minimalism is not that.

Hey Clara! The redesign and sketchup model only actually takes a day or two tops. I spend most of my time rendering and editing the video.

Hanging cabinets?
New kitchen feels so peaceful, love the whole process. I really enjoyed the process of makeover from sketchup! Thank you
20k for a whole new kitchen and floor? And removing everithing?
Im gonna need you to re-do my 20years old house, with my YT studio (2,5x3) included! hahah Great vid as always! 😍🤘⚡
The all white version is just too dull and drab. There is no character.
What about the dishwasher?
your content is great, I am a interior design student and these transformations are marvelous, so inspiring.. keep posting these makeovers please.. greetings from brazil btw
American kitchen appliances are certainly way too big.
I am about to redo my kitchen too! Stealing some ideas from your videos ☺️
best series 👏
Not everyone wants open plan and the clients only had a $20,000 budget. All the work you are talking about is expensive.
Dayum that’s a nice kitchen
Please make a course for this type of design make over, I’m happy to pay for it!
Loved this beautiful and practical kitchen. Preferred the white.
That is incredible. I also redesigned my own kitchen similar to that but using the Ikea modeller. I feel like I’m an Architect also now!
Hi there Daniel,
I've recently come across your channel and I absolutely love this Architect Redesigns series. Anyways, love the content and can't wait to see more.
everytime i watch a video from this series, i wanna change my home too XD. beautiful work as always!!
This is incredible and I love how you plan those spaces and the palettes that you follow. Keep going, can’t wait for next video tho
The design looks great! It may be costly to move the plumbing from the window to the island. Hopefully the family can make it work with their budget
Bloody amazing mate! Keep up these amazing designs. They give me so much inspiration!
love your work. im currently learning sketchup, have you thought of doing a tutorial of how you translate images or a floor plan into a 3d model?
Hi, i have software technical questions. Do you render this scene using vray for sketch up on macbook pro? I use windows and really considering macbook for my interior work. Thanks for the great video
The color changes at the end were really great! Personally I would have preferred the sink on the back wall. I like to have it close to the stove and far from the table. But maybe that wasn’t possible because of the plumbing?
Great content 👌
Are these United Kingdom pounds? I thought everything was in Euros? Dams annoying to translate into Cdn. dollars not being sure. And many converters no longer even provide pounds sterling...
Any chance you can list all equivalent UK IKEA items required for island of kitchen pls.
Better still, all items for this kitchen. Thanks a million.
Hi Daniel, I like your minimalist design with white modern cabinets. We are in NYC. May I know if you can remodel our kitchen? Thanks!
One of my favourites
Is this real? @danieltitchner
1. the sink should be on the other side, next to the stove. but they do need to do a lot of replumbing either way….
2. you did not take into account to make anything baby proof. that should have been a no brainer 🥴
3. i would have extended the kitchen cupboard to the ceiling. you wasted space
the fridge in the pantry is nice, the cupboards above it too! white is beautiful.
i think 20k is a huge budget and they could get more out of it.
Well, time to binge watch this series!
I love your designs and how you explain everything. It looks so easy tho lol.
I can see how some people like this aesthetic, but it's not for me
Genius design. Love the simplicity, flow, and practicality.
I have space for a butlers kitchen for noisy and messy cooking off the minimalist looking kitchen area.
Do you have thoughts on this layout?
I love your videos and soon im getting married and i have a small space to turn to a small kitchen i tried ikea planner and im so out of ideas . Need HELP!!!!
Usually love your work but not a fan of this for the yanks. I actually copied your kitchen, sans the island for a friend.
Peace
The best series on youtube
Great design...the only change i would make is extend the island and have cabinets under the stools to compensate for the loss of the pantry storage...
Love the design decisions and the final solutions, except the breakfast bar in the same space as the dinette. Seems like duplication.
Double sink is extremely inconvenient in the US. Especially For a family of more than 2
i wouldve put a big vertical island in the centre of the room to combine the island and the dining table into one, creating continuity between kitchen and dining. this would also make the room walkable from all ends, instead of the corner being blocked off as it is with the current island.
it's so annoying that they (trimble) made a once free software cost so much money. Nonetheless, great video!
I'm really enjoying these minimalist renovations Dan, keep it going!
20 grand for a kitchen? Christ, that's a downpayment on an apartment
Try having the sink a little closer to the wall.
That way if someone is washing dishes and someone is at the oven, they won't bump into each other.
Why the separate microwave tho, instead of just getting an oven with microwave function?
Love your work! It’s so cool to be able to follow the whole process of your solution! 😊
I share the corner cabinet hatred. Maybe it's because my home had one, maybe it's years of playing the sims.
Why are kitchens almost always white in your redesigns? :)
