    The first lorikeet I ever got was a runner, no tail or flight feathers (they never grew at all), he fell from the nest and I rescued him from a dog, when I was maybe 8 years old? He loved me unconditionally, never *ever* bit me, snuggled with me, played and sang, the works. 100% wild but we just fell in love with each other since day 1.
    The next one I got was when I was around 16-17, he had also fallen or been kicked from the nest. He couldn't fly and was covered in lice, but I scooped him up and took him home to rehab him. Eventually he learnt to fly but he was super tame from day 1 too, honestly I've never had a bad experience with these guys. They're amazing.

      What about the pooping? I knew lorikeets pooped more than other species of parrots but mine is every 10 seconds outside of the cage and I read somewhere you can potty train them I’m trying not to ruin my rugs he’s almost 5 months old hatch date was October 2nd so he’s still very curious

    I rescued a musk lorikeet that got attacked by a wattle bird. I'd never raised a lorikeet before but they are intelligent enough to understand that I wasn't a threat. The flock that the bird came from will frequently fly past my house and the lorikeet is beginning to get movement in the wing again but it cannot fly at all. I like your method, it looks effective and makes sense. I just endured the pain and eventually the bird was gentle with me. Can't wait for the lorikeet to recover. They are so messy! It's like a water gun of fruit-sugary-quick dry resin.

    I have about 30 lorikeets that come around to my unit every day. Morning and night. I feed them a little but don't want them to know that there will be food all the time.
    They jump into my hands and some I was even able to pat, specially the younger birds. There is a pare that have nested in the tree near my unit and they are very territorial about other birds feeding which scares them off. I don't want one as pets, but love they come around to visit me, even for short periods of time. But when it rains they are here 90% of the time under the roof.

Like when I come to her cage she’ll come to me start chattering look at me but I’ve never really attempted to put my hand in. We got gifted another one called Jojo she screams a lot more but she will let you touch her and do things she’ll go on people‘s shoulders time to time mainly with just one she can do multiple what do I do with the other one her name is lucky like I’m scared but what do I do to get trust? yes, could absolutely have been let free at that point, now it will depend on what's happened to it over the last year. Wildlife rescue organisations are highly experienced with "soft release" of these types of birds, where they are gradually returned to a wild life, with supplemental food & a safe place to return to while they connect with local wild flocks

      i'd say between $250 - $300 Just for the bird (A chick)
      then all the rest of the stuff and the cage,
      i reckon , startup cost to own one of these guys is around $400 - $500 being realistic .
      but the ongoing cost is fuck all
      and trust me... YOU WANT TO GET A YOUNG ONE
      because you could end up paying a lot of money and the bird is just frozen and does nothing.
      or
      it hates the shit out of you and insists on biting you, this will drive you nuts.

      wow...$1,000 just for the lori
      in saying that i'm suprised you have them in america
      so.. my justification for the price increase would be
      Here in Australia they are native and fucking everywhere
      but Keep in mind.....
      going into a pet show it's very common to be able to buy a budgie for like $20 and they are always in stock
      where as you don't always , in fact VERY RARELY see a lori up for sale
      so they are common in the wild, but not in pet stores
      i would imagine they are even more rare in america
      so i imagine that's why they cost more
      for us.... $1,000 is like buying Eclectus not a rainbow lori

      @@josephhall7317 They are very sweet even if they do bite sometimes. We only have wild ones around where I live and we sometimes feed them lorikeet specified food or a few seeds. They are very sociable birds but god forbid if they get into a disagreement with each other! The screech drives you mad. 😂

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 3 года назад

      @@tigerdeer wild ones won't bite people. Yup they get into some pretty intense arguments with each other & have a pretty ruthless pecking order at times (well ok, seems to be almost all the time lol) but they're not like brush turkeys or emus that are just straight out dumb, lorikeets are smart, they don't bite the hand that feeds them :)
      Don't physically grab them obviously or they might bite if they can't escape, but otherwise, if you hand feed or whatever, they're not going to bite a human hand :) I'm a wildlife rescuer, so we do get bitten during rescues at times & they can hurt a bit, probably more than any other Aussie animal, but even in rescue settings where they're hurt & scared, wild ones are still generally smart enough to understand they're being helped & go easy on the biting.
      & if you must feed the wild ones, fruit is better than seed for lorries, but water is better still, & lorikeets LOVE a bird bath that's just the right depth & warmth & of course native bushes/trees are the best feeding option too, but I'm sure you've already heard all of this a million times :) No bread & honey is the main thing.
      Try the lori mix dry too if you haven't already done so, then a big dish of water nearby & watch them go nuts in their new bath :)

    • @tigerdeer
      @tigerdeer 3 года назад +1

      @@mehere8038 Hey, thank you very much for all the recommendations. It doesn't hurt to be reminded even if you have heard them before. Seeds would be a very rare treat for them but I give them the lorry mix as well as a few grapes and pieces of fresh apple. Never anything else though as you said. They are very smart but could absolutely eat till they can't move, lol, so I limit the food a lot. Just enough for them not to forget me :D

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 3 года назад

      @@tigerdeer sounds like you've got it down pat :)) Grapes & apple are definitely the favourites aren't they!
      & wild birds don't know where the next meal's coming from & are used to going hungry when it rains & so washes the pollen away, so kinda can't blame them gouging when they've got the chance :) but yeh, they certainly will get themselves VERY fat if they can won't they!!!!!! I had a rescue one with PBFD that I gave to a neighbour instead of euthinasing (like we're meant to if they're not releasable) & it became seriously round lol I gave him a second non-releasable rescue one to keep it company too & same thing, the 2 of them would just sit on the railing when he put them there for fresh air, unable to do anything more than a bit of a waddle cause of their size :(. They only lived a few years because of that which was sad, but they were very happy with the life they had, sitting on the railing & playing together on the floor inside his home & being lifted onto his shoulder to watch tv (they originally climbed up there, but lost that ability to when they got fat, so he'd just pick them up & put them where he knew they wanted to go, same with the kitchen table that they had a rope up to but got too fat to be able to use, so they'd just sit at the rope & give a squark to tell him they were waiting to be lifted up lol, so yeh, I know just how fat they can get if given the chance!
      Have you tried feeding the lorri mix dry for yours? We always do it wet as standard with wildlife rescue, not really sure why, packet says it can be done as either, but with these pet ones I have now, I actually tried giving them some dry to give them some variety in their diet & found it takes them MUCH longer to eat it dry, so could work well with what you're doing, or may not, I've never tried it with wild ones to know, the ones I have here do make a big mess with it & quite a bit of it ends up on the outside of their beaks & then falling to the bottom of the cage/being scrapped off on the wire & falling to the bottom & they also pick the food dishes up & tip them out MUCH more with it dry, I think cause wet they gobble it down so it's empty before being tipped out, but dry the longer eating time means the tipping comes first, anyway I'm just thinking it could be an interesting experiment to do if you want them to come in for food but not get a huge amount of food :) Might totally fail too I'm not sure, does take them far longer to eat the same amount fed that way though :)
