    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    In this episode of The Questionable Garage, Jared faces a tough decision and a thrilling new adventure as he parts ways with one of the most fun cars in the fleet-a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with a 5-speed manual swap. While letting go of the Grand Marquis might be bittersweet, the excitement levels skyrocket with the arrival of its replacement, an insanely cool and rare 1992 Chevy K3500 Big Block truck with a 5-speed manual transmission!
    After completing the paperwork and hitting the road in the new truck, Jared’s excitement is short-lived when disaster strikes-he breaks it on the way home. But that's not where the story ends! Jared jumps into action, diagnosing the problem and getting to work on repairs. What follows is a wild ride of troubleshooting and wrench-turning, capped off with the discovery of one of the worst smells a vehicle has ever made.
    From the highs of trading up to a rare gem to the lows of unexpected breakdowns (and questionable smells), this episode is packed with the drama and fun that comes with wrenching on quirky, powerful vehicles. Tune in to see if Jared can get the K3500 back on the road and whether this unique truck is worth the trouble.

    When you were pulling that apart without a trans jack I was thinking "Damn, remind me not to piss Jared off!". I've bench pressed a lot of transmissions over the years, both standing and laying on my back, but an NV45 isn't on the list. That was definitely a questionable choice.

    I would be tempted to buy a ton of rust converter and a garden sprayer, and turn all that brown underneath into black, then coat it with some oil/wax type stuff! Looks solid and very little oil leaks - did you do the output seal on the transfer case as well? I didn't see the rear main getting done, but assumed it was. It'll be a great workhorse for you!

    24:15 Here's my "Words Picture" on a very similar situation.
    Car was an E46 BMW 330i that was tracked (hard) with a Quaife differential. After the first track session, it became clear the diff needed a lot more fluid and a cooler. I'm there helping my friend with misc stuff on this car when he cracked the diff open. OMG, the smell. Imagine what Jared describes but much, much worse. Take that rancid taco porta-potty, dump it into a concentrated Sulphur lake and set it on fire. We ran out of the shop gagging to let it finish draining; but even from 20+ feet away it was terrible.
    As we stood there, contemplating our life choices, the Milpitas Fire Department pulls up. Turns out someone else in the industrial complex, on the far corner from the shop, called the FD thinking there was a massive natural gas leak. After assuring the FD that it was truly "nothing" more than badly burned differential fluid, which they verified first hand (the poor bastards) they left and we, eventually, sealed that crap up in a jug. Even so, the shop stank for days... and the thought of having to smell even regular used gear oil still makes me a bit sick to my stomach.
    Good times! 1 out of 10. Would not recommend! 😅

    I know that in 1992, Chevy had two manual transmissions. One was the sort of gear you hand down to generations yet unborn. The other was junk. You must have the good one because it is a one ton truck, right? I love me some GMT400. I had a 92 K2500 Suburban with a 350, 4l80, and the full floating rear end geared at 4.10. It was super comfortable tank, but GUTLESS. It couldn't hold 70mph up a minor incline in OD. It ended up too rusty to keep on the road and I had to move on. I now have a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 non-HD with a 6.0, 4l80, and a 12 bolt geared at 3.73. Previous owner left it for dead with a broken flexplate. I bought it for a song, fixed everything that was wrong with it, including a transmission rebuild, and now have a rusty but reliable truck. I moved some cars on a car hauler this past weekend with it and it did it without complaint. I lean more towards the GMT800s, but only because they were the new trucks at the time I was starting out as a technician and I know them so well.

    To Mechanical Inspector Gadget; there are only a couple of times the pedal is tasty snug- when it's a brand new truck and when it's just has a clutch job. Since you didn't sat you had readjusted it, the new clutch put the inner workings where the clutch was set before. The Valleho clutch may well be the original. And you are 100%- that can be and will be a very useful truck indeed! Having good AC would make it ideal. As comfortable as the bench was, Jared, I'd get a better bucket- you you know what will thank you on a 500-1000 mile drives like you have done for CarTrek. A removable fifth wheel to carry a goose neck on too. Fix the paint to protect the metal; daily drivers with "spotty paint seldom get stolen! Congrats on the buy and not needing hernia surgery!

    Jerod, on the shifter retaining collar, take the lever off so it's just a stub (if you can like a Dodge NV4500) and use a large impact socket to push and turn. Makes life a lot easier. It also would have been a good idea to remove the tail housing from the gear box to upgrade the 5th gear nut. Not as big of a deal on gas powered trucks, but still a weak point of that transmission.

    Congrats on the new ride Jared. I think you did really good on your trade... No it's not a show queen,
    but who cares. I'm sure it will look a lot better after you get done detailing it.
    In 2002 I bought a new black Dodge HD 2500 4X4 crewcab with the Cummins engine. It was a very good pickup.
    Even though it only had 80,000 miles on it and it looked like new, In 2013 I decided it was time for a new one so I
    bought a fully loaded RAM HD 2500 4X4 crewcab. I got to drive it for about a month and then it went into the service department
    where it stayed for SIX MONTHS. It had wiring and emissions issues and they couldn't fix it, so I got a 2014
    that was identical. I got to drive that one for four months and it developed the same issues as the 2013.
    Not being very smart, I decided to try one more because I loved the pickups, so I ordered a 2015.
    It too was fully loaded with the Cummins. This one started having the same issues in about two weeks.
    I got really pissed off and traded it in on a 2015 GMC. No more problems.
    The RAM pickups are the biggest pile of shit on the road. It's unfortunate because they look nice and I like the Cummins.
    I will never buy another new vehicle. They get worse and more expensive every year...

    i traded my 08 gmc sierra for a 07 honda element. im still loving the trade but the honda has a power steering leak which ive tired a few things and am about to change the pump to see if that solves my problem. Im a new mechanic and mostly just a hobbiest but ive been trying to do easy repairs myself. thanks for all the knownladge you have given me over the years to even make this trade posiable cause i wouldnt of been able to confidently say i could fix something on a car without it.
    Also sorry to hear you lost the dually.
    I didnt want to trade my truck away but i wasnt using it as a truck as often as i would of liked and needed something more fuel efficent to help save on fuel cost.

    Come on Mr. Pink, you didn't just come through a hurricane, at least Helene. I live a few miles from you and we had some rain and that was it, not a hurricane! You probably described your experience to garner interest; however, the devastating effects of a hurricane happened well above Hall Co. in Western NC.

    • @danatkinson6698
      @danatkinson6698 2 дня назад

      @mike30534 the swap happened where the eye of Helene passed through earlier that morning. Although it doesn't look it, we were without power. A mile or so away friends of mine were without power for days after we swapped. Yes it's nothing compared to the devastation in the mountains of NC and TN but he did go and drive during a hurricane to make the swap.

    • @TheQuestionableGarage
      @TheQuestionableGarage  2 дня назад

      This was filmed before the devastation had fully even happened or was known, we had trees and limbs down and no power, and Daniel was east, where there was more damage. There was quite a bit we ended up leaving out due to what Helene ended up doing.
