Kuala Lumpur is ranked 7th in the world in number of skyscrapers (>150m) after Hong Kong, Shenzhen, New York, Dubai, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

You're right about the "Chinatown". It's only so-named for touristy reasons. The real draw of the place is its street market. That's what Petaling Street was initially known for. The Chinatown moniker was thrown in later as a gimmick.
And actually, if you ask me, I think it's also to subtly undermine the contribution of the Chinese to the city's history. KL used to be Chinese majority. By designating only this one area as "Chinatown", the authorities are giving visitors the false impression that the Chinese community mainly lived in an enclave. As a matter of fact, they were the majority and contributed immensely to the city's development.

Actually I think it was the other way around. That place had been known as Chinatown for decades and back then during the 90s it was the 'new Chinatown' (yes I was in KL during the 90s) and Pudu area was the 'old Chinatown'. There were lots of Chinese there doing businesses and more or less the same consignments though street food vendors became less and less over the years as the vendor are catching up with lots of tourist that later change the overall landscape of that area over a decade. And don't judge me but it is reality that when Chinese do business, big profit is priority above anything else and for that reason, they started hiring foreigners to look after their stalls. If you dig deeper into the location, you will probably find almost all the shops there belongs to the Malaysian Chinese so the title Chinatown is not wrong but how the people there taking advantage of the tourist and trying hard to lower their overhead by hiring foreign workers are the main reason of the overall changes in the landscape there.
Another area that could potentially became the 'next Petaling Street' is Jalan Alor, and I think in the not so distant future, it will happen... because more and more tourist there and as most of the vendors there are Chinese, what is the next step? We seen the price hikes like crazy (as if fried banana there made of gold butter if you know what I mean) ....and next is lower the overhead, take foreign workers. Let's leave Chinese out of the equation here for a bit just to be fair to every one... Burger Boss own by Malay vendor at Jalan Alor also hiring foreign worker to cook Ramly Burger to lower their cost. So as the trend goes, touristy places will be flooded with foreign workers and will change the landscape of that place if no action is taken.
