Dango D01 Wallet: Worth It? (1-Year Review)

  • If you’ve watched any of my EDC update videos, then you’ve probably seen this wallet. I’ve had a lot of questions asked about it, and it has been in my EDC carry for almost two years, so I thought I should finally make a review. As always, I’ll be sharing both my pros and cons and whether I think this wallet is ultimately worth it.
    For starters, I like the concept that this wallet is predicated on. It’s a front-pocket wallet, and it’s been totally overbuilt. You can see that there is no less than ten bolts to secure the leather to the aluminum frame, so this thing isn’t falling apart. They’ve used decent quality leather, and the wallet is relatively lightweight. Dango nailed the build here, and I can find no fault in terms of quality.
    An accessory that I’m fond of is this paracord beaver tail that they included when I bought mine. Funnily enough, it’s super useful when you’re going through a restaurant drive-thru. Accessing a front pocket wallet when you’re seated is difficult, and I love how the beaver tail makes the wallet more accessible. Not to mention, it’s a really great fiddle piece for when you’re bored.
    Unfortunately, this is where I run out of good things to say about this wallet. When I bought this wallet, it came with a multitool card - this is the only distinction between the D01 and T01 tactical wallets that Dango sells. Now to put it nicely, the multitool is hot garbage. It’s poorly designed, and it will poke you if you aren’t careful. For this reason alone, I cannot recommend purchasing the T01 wallet. The other issue you run into with the multitool card is that it sucks up precious space.
    Dango says that the wallet has a capacity of 12 cards; however, realistically the capacity is much closer to seven cards, and that’s not even including the multitool. The leather compartment in front will hold three cards max and the back holds about four. As you add more cards to the wallet though, you’ll notice that the RFID plate starts to “float” and it just doesn’t look pretty. This is a direct consequence of the way they’ve used the rubber band to hold everything in place. And here-in lies another design flaw: The entire functionality of the wallet is predicated on the rubber band. To Dango’s credit, this seems to be a high-quality band and I’ve never had an issue - yet. Luckily, replacement bands can be bought for like five bucks.
    Let’s talk conclusions - is the Dango wallet worth it? I’m sure you can see where this is going, and the answer is a flat NO especially not at $70. The build quality is good, the aesthetics are godly, but the design execution is simply poor. The only reason why I still carry it to this day is because it works for my small collection of cards. If you carry more than seven cards and aren’t willing to skimp on cash, then this probably isn’t the wallet for you. In short, despite what anyone else might say, to me this is an overpriced, niche wallet. And if I ranked wallets like I did my flashlights, this would probably be a solid C-minus.

    Something I forgot to mention is that the integrated bottle opener is useless. Aluminum bottle tops will slowly eat away at the aluminum frame, and it’s not a pretty look. Overall, I stand by what I said: This is a very well-built and aesthetically pleasing wallet, but the design execution is also rather poor.

      I wonder about that. I've been using this wallet for 4 years and have no issues with the bottle opener. I agree the multi-tool is completely useless. I got rid of mine within the 1st month. The wear after 4 years is minimal and looks great. I have never had to replace the silicone band either. And its seen high use

    5 years carrying T01. Ya, multitool is garbage and didn't make it a day in my wallet. The band isn't even close to failure. After 5 years I just swapped out colors. I've always had black leather and a gray band. I just swapped it out and it now looks like the one you reviewed. I purchased both colors together in 2016, just never felt the urge to swap. I just got an A10 and have been looking at Dango all over again. It has served me well. Functional and beautiful to behold.

    About the rubber band... unless you're making a slingshot out of it or something, it ain't breaking. That was my fear at the beginning too, but I have had my Dango for years now with the same band, no problems. I thought if it didn't break then it might just lose tension, but it's all good and snug still. Looks a little worn but otherwise great.

    I’ve had my T02 Titanium Tactical bifold wallet now for nearly 3 years and it’s been the best wallet I’ve ever owned. I’ve had to migrate it to the front pocket because the metal was wearing out my rear pockets in my jeans. I don’t know if it’s the titanium strength, but my wallet and the tool doesn’t show any harsh wear at all really. I’ve had to use the tool a couple of times to open boxes and a couple of bottles. The silicone band is still in good shape, but the diamond design is wearing off on the edges. The only negative I can think of with this wallet... I don’t ever carry cash but when I do and getting change at a register I have to cram the bills into my pocket until I can make time to get it all folded behind the band but it’s not too big of a deal for me.

    You say it's an overpriced niche wallet, but you only compared it to another wallet of the same price. And what is a comparable wallet for cheaper, without sacrificing build quality? I expect to pay $10-20 for a leather wallet that would be replaced in a couple years, and I would expect to pay at least $50 for one that last many years, while still maintaining it's composure (not frayed, etc)
    This was a one-year review, but it seemed to focus on things that would have been covered in an out of the box review. I would expect in a one year review to hear more about how it's held up, and expectations on it continuing to hold up. The only mention that seemed to be worried about is the silicone. Do you have reason to believe it is critically worn, or is this a general concern that if it does break the wallet would not function?
    Amazon has no shortage of cheap (in both senses) minimalist wallets which probably average around $30, and use elastic bands instead of silicone, which will definitely stretch, especially if pushing to the capacity. Even the ridge uses elastic, and was definitely a deterrent when I sought a new wallet.

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  4 года назад +3

      Hi! It feels like some of your criticisms are a bit unfounded? For one, I didn't compare the D01 to any other wallet. While I can't comment on comparable wallets for less, I simply shared it's value to me relative to the price I paid - two very different things.
      Regarding longevity, I also stated verbatim that "I can find no fault in terms of build quality" and that it wasn't going to fall apart anytime soon. And despite my criticisms of the wallet, I also said I would continue to use it going forward until it fails on me. I'd think it would be tacit that it's held up fine so far.
      About the silicone band: It's not a general concern but rather a *fact* that the wallet's function - sans the front leather, card slot - is predicated on it. Mine's still working fine, but if it breaks they can be had for $5.
      Hope this helps clarify!

      I've had mine for 5 years. I've carried the shit out of it. Everyday, all day exclusively. The band being theoretically the weakest point isn't showing any signs of wear or deteroation. I took it apart to swap colors tonite for the 1st time. The aluminum plate is a bit dingy underneath where my cards lived. I'm sure it can be buffed out. The outer edges of the chasis are minimally scratched. The old black leather face has the imprint of a tiny comb I slid in there and forgot about. This wallet would last me a life time. I only swapped for an aesthetic change since I just a new dango A10. I'll probably back and forth a few wallets for awhile and see where I land. But I wouldn't worry about durability and longevity.

    Absolutely agree, they could have made the channel “deeper” to allow more credit cards, where the cards would remain inside the wallet. You CANNOT carry more than 5-6 cards with the wallet

  • @kwakuba9167
    @kwakuba9167 Год назад

    You missed the most important point regarding number of cards. The more cards you put in the less practical it gets to actually pull the cards out and use them. I put in the touted 12 cards and I ended up fighting the wallet to pay for my groceries. If the rfid plate floats you may have to disassemble the plate and all the cards each time to get to the card you need. I suggest one embossed card on each side of the leather or 3 max if at least one card is non embossed. And max 4 in the rfid chamber for embossed cards maybe 5 if at least one card is non embossed. And as you said, I am concerned by the fact that the integrity of the whole wallet depends on the silicone band which will naturally degrade over time or can get damaged. The company needs to reassess their product philosophy and pricing. I kept mine because I like the unique style and the lanyard gets my juices going for some inexlplicable reason. And I normally don't carry cash and a bunch of cards so it works ok for me practically.

  • @crappy60
    @crappy60 2 года назад

    This is a good review as it coincides with real world use. Seeing other reviews, if the user doesn’t really care that the back plate sticks out then the capacity will be better. I understand preferences with aesthetics but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the wallet can’t hold more. I understand your concern with the band as well. It’s the same thing with CCW mindset, if one thing goes wrong then the one time I need the device to operate it fails, so if the band fails at the wrong time your cards go everywhere. I can see where you’re coming from with that.
