If memory serves me correctly, there was a zone in Sonic Chaos that is a remix of this song. Mecha Green Hills Zone to be exact. It is a mashup of the Underground Zone with Green Hills Zone in this game.
The first boss is oddly difficult for a first boss in the Game Gear version. I did learn how to beat it when I saw a video here on RUclips years later.
I'm positive this theme was composed by Masafumi Ogata, who also worked in the Sonic CD JP OST (alongside Naofumi Hataya). This explains why it sounds fantastic.
