“Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.” What makes public spaces like this interesting is the kind of dialogue they provoke. The guest lecturer would probably like to see some gadflies who do not sing to the choir. Heaping the man with adulations and praise seldom dispense new ideas. The fact is we tend to snap out of our stupor when our assumptions are challenged whereupon we try to do the same as we challenge the underlined assumptions in return. It is in the give and take where we arrive at a higher level of understanding with one another. One can safely assume those who are flummoxed by Ustaz Nouman's visit on a family night to EPIC have not thoroughly thought through their assumptions. As a public speaker, a leader is naturally held at a higher standard and that the bar is higher than the average community member. This, however, doesn’t automatically put the leaders on a high moral pedestal that they should noy be given a chance to collect their heels and return to their graceful leadership posts. In fact, the very shortcomings are signs of their humanity donned with frailties; faults and moral lapses that we ourselves can fall prey to. The only difference is that ours is committed, not in public space, thus, not subjected to the kind of scrutiny our leaders face. Therefore, just because by Allah's grace our lapses didn't come out to the public doesn't mean we are somehow better than those who had to grapple with their lapses in the public square. Acting more pious instead of showing sympathy toward our fellow human beings who may have fallen from grace is tantamount to an empty bravado as meaningless banter as they come. To the contrary, when a leader steps up to the plate and rises beyond and above his past failures ought to be looked at as a model of a resolute character and have affinity toward such a leader who is able to continue his calling in life despite the shortcomings of his past.
