It will last quite some time but 50 is a stretch. I think if they enjoy the same technology and IAAF does not legalise shoe improvements at least for the sprints and it is a fair comparision to Bolt's running state then it should take about 20 years.
There's only one person that should have beaten 9.58 s and that's Bolt himself. If he had chosen more optimal venues with slightly higher altitude, warmer temperatures, and trained a bit differently, he surely could have run a sub 9.5.
Love your videos! Out of interest, where do you get the 60m splits from which you show at the 2 minute mark? Just because I’ve not seen them quoted before and a couple seem questionable, especially Tyson’s as he had a terrible start in that 9.69 race. Not claiming they’re wrong just interested in how you find them!
If you search internet and speak with the guys who are really into statistics, you can get some similar times. The data is obviously questionable since it is not official but at least it shows some tendencies in sprinting.
Very interesting channel ! Relaxation applies to track cycling sprints as well. Since you are on a fixed gear and reach high cadences(+150rpm), your legs can easily slow you down if you're not relaxed enough. You can have all the power in the world but anyone with faster legs will get in your draft and smoke you in the end

One stated Bolt reaches 12.24 m/s, another stated that he had an AVERAGE speed of 12.42 m/s and one stated that he hit 13.05 m/s. I honestly don't know what's going on here, because they all have the same numbers for something else, but when they get to the "m/s" it goes sideways. I guess it's just the case of terrible misinformation.

there was an article I read 1 week ago about Bolt saying that there is the possibility his 100m WR could be broken by Coleman this 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He said that the new track in Tokyo is very solid and fast. You have to count the wind factor talking about times also. Coleman is not in his prime yet, considering usually prime is around 27/28 for sprinters, if he stays out of injuries and always improving each year, I can see him beating 9.58 Bolt WR in right weather condition with good tailwind and fast track in the future. Bolt's records will be broken eventually but probably not by anyone anytime soon. It'll probably be done by a guy who's got a similar build/physique to Bolt, maybe even more extreme. Like 6'6 or 6'7 but crazy fast twitching muscles. When LeBron James first came into the NBA, people were shocked by his overall size and athleticism at the SF position, until Giannis came along and added more inches of height and wingspan while matching LeBron's overall athleticism.
The reason leg length isn't mentioned is because people who know what they're talking about understand that leg length (amongst humans) makes zero difference to your speed. The myth is that long legs equate to larger strides, they don't. Assuming you're sprinting properly and not overstriding, your foot will strike under your COM (centre of mass), you don't use long legs to 'reach' forward. That's called overstriding. Stride length is determined by how much force you're able to apply into the ground. Usain Bolt applies greater force, giving him a larger stride length and has the ability to hold that speed over a longer distance and decelerate more gradually, thus, he has superior top-end speed.

I was only 5.6 and while I'd be in a great position coming off the bend, in the last 30m they would enivitably make up the distance. The 60m and 100m was better for me. I believe Bolts 200m will never be broken.

Have you guys noticed that the fastest athletes don't have much bend when their legs hit the ground. The fastest sprinter's legs look like they are stiff on contact. I guess stiffness = more force which = higher velocity
This guy broke down the times well. He ended with the conclusion that in order to beat Bolt's time, Coleman needs to run more relaxed. That is true. However, another secret is to run more symetrical so as not to bleed off momentum. Hardly any sprinter runs symetrical. The most symetrical sprinter I have seen was Tryvon Bromell.
That is very true, symmetry is a good thing but most sprinters are asymmetrical due to different leg strength and leg length. Coleman is much more asymmetrical than Bolt. Bromell looks very smooth compared to Coleman, still, he is asymmetrical too.

I put it down to his low weight which gives him a big advantage in the acceleration phase. Its incredibly rare to find a sprinter who sprints symetrically. Bolt finished his last 40m NOT with 13 strides. He covered the last 40m in about 14 strides. Bolt’s average stride length of the last 40m was 2.82m. He used 40.8 strides to cover the whole 100m in Berlin. Your 0.81s/10m is based on the 1.61s/20m statistics. 0.805≈0.81 Btw, Tyson Gay covered his 60-80m in Berlin using only 1.63s, the second fastest human “definite speed” of all time.

Look at the other big guys: Kemal Bailey Cole -6’4, Prescod 6’5, Ryan Bailey 6’4, Le Maitre 6’4, Obikweilu 6’5, Bloomfield 6’6: none of them got good starts, not even in any comparison with Bolt. Bolt’s WR ‘s start, 10-30m, 30-60m are all among the ever fastest categories.
I like these vids but some of the data is a little off. Coleman's splits are taken from high speed video cameras while Bolt's quoted times are LAVEG laser times, which are slightly slower than camera splits due to the way the laser is targeted, especially over the first half of the race. The official biomechanical report of the IAAF for 2009 used high speed cameras as well as laser and clocked Bolt at 6.29s at 60m and got his average speed during 60-80m interval as 20m/1.61s = 12.42m/s, suggesting he went even higher somewhere in the middle of that interval. These are quite significant differences when discussing these tiny margins. I would suggest using these official times as they are consistent for both sprinters and do change speeds and intervals quite significantly in a 100m context. Coleman at his best is very close to Bolt for 60m but simply isn't capable of matching Bolt's second half due to his physical limitations and nobody else will match Bolt til somebody of similar freakish physical characteristics and abilities comes along.
I would be very difficult in future to break the world reccond. If somone off this generation can do that it will be cris coleman but dont be supprised if it didnt happen.
Yeah, this is a Flo Jo level record now, her 100m time has stayed the best since 1988, so over 30 years, I expect Bolt's will be similar, he's WAY ahead of the next best times and even those runners (Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin) are way ahead of what most top sprinter's run.
U. Bolt and J. Gatlin are both older gentlemen and are still competing at a high level in a sport that is very competitive. Coleman is young and has his hold career ahead of him (he's humble and gives God the glory for his abilities). I know that if Coleman hit the gym and work on his arms and legs (to build up a little more muscle) he can move faster down the track running the 100 meters in the 9.60's or possibly lower.

60m "split" is not the same as a 60m indoor time. A 60m "split" is going to be .10 seconds better and can be even another .1 or .2 due to wind and/or weather.

The Way to Win Even Usain Bolt said his ultimate goal was to run 9.4 and sub 19 in the 200 but he did not reach them. If you look at the other great sprinters Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay, they are both similar heights to Coleman and body types. Even they could barely go sub 9.7. Coleman is already older than Bolt was when Bolt ran 9.58 and 19.19. It is highly unlikely that someone at his height will break the WR but I think he is capable of a high 9.6, probably a 9.67 at best. But there’s no way he will run a 9.5 and I’m not hating when I say that.
true but I’m also a realist and the way I see it: Colman is a tremendous starter BUT doesn’t have to top end speed like bolt and also can’t maintain the speed needed to break the WR. Finally a realistic analysis! I always hear people say so and so has a chance to beat Bolt's record, or Coleman has the 60m WR and therefore has a good shot, but in reality the fastest 60m is also by Bolt when he ran his 9.58. If you don't have Bolt's top speed/speed endurance you'd legit have to be a 6.2x 60m runner to stand a chance. Another good comparison is Bolt's 9.69 to anyone else, he beat is chest and SLOWED down and ran a 9.69, so if your best is slower than 9.70 going all out, then Bolt in his prime can beat you while slowing down on purpose... even 9.7x runners aren't close to Bolt. Blake and Gay were the closest and even they weren't just a hair behind him, it was still a large margin.
Exactly. According to iaaf points, 6.25 is better than 9.58. Coleman has to get a time of 6.25 outdoor to even have some CONSIDERATION of breaking the world record. The thing is even if Coleman runs that, his finish isn't good enough and it's extremely rare for a guy to have a completely well rounded race. Coleman's 6.32 outdoor in his 2019 doha 9.76 race, is as impressive as 9.69 in points and his 3.44 finish is as impressive as a 9.83, which is as impressive as a 19.7 200m time. To beat the record you need split times of 6.25+3.32 and the only people that had the slightest chances to break it were blake and gay.
That 2017 world Championship 100 meters was very slow, but if you look at all of Coleman's races you can see that his speed decreases at around the 80 meters mark..

In my suggestion, maybe you could try a “fastest last 40m” list of elite sprinters who broke 3.40 or even 3.35. The last 40m capability shows the real “running limit” and the “definite speed”. Coleman never broke 3.40. He took so much advantage of high acceleration. But when we talk about cheetah, antelope or even a Porsche 911, we mainly talk about the top end speed capability, but not just merely the acceleration time. So even as the current NO1 sprinter and a world champ, as for now, Coleman could have no match to the “fan-five” in their primes: Bolt, Blake, Gay, Gatlin, Powell. All of the fab five broke 3.40 for the last 40m and hit faster top end speed than 0.83s/10m. Coleman has no way to achieve that at the current moment. Coleman literally maximize his potential and capability of running sub 9.8 (9.79, 9.76), with a 60-40m split equation format of 6.36+3.43, 6.32+3.44. His top end speed is his weakness. If Coleman wants to near sub 9.6 like Berlin Bolt, with Coleman’s current format, he needs to run 6.17+3.43, or faster. Subtracting the standard reaction time 0.150, Coleman litterally needs to break a sub6.0 for the first 60m for “definite running time”, FAT. Come on
yennox to break 9.69, Coleman needs to at least have a formula of 6.30+3.39. 3.39 for the last 40m would ask 0.825-0.830 top end speed for at least 20m segments, while maintain the speed to least decelerate from 80-100m. For Coleman’s current running style, stride length, and turnover rate, it would be very very challenging. From 2008-2015, while Gay and Gatlin in their prime, running a 9.76 is like a “daily job”.

One stated Bolt reaches 12.24 m/s, another stated that he had an AVERAGE speed of 12.42 m/s and one stated that he hit 13.05 m/s. I honestly don't know what's going on here, because they all have the same numbers for something else, but when they get to the "m/s" it goes sideways. I guess it's just the case of terrible misinformation.

there was an article I read 1 week ago about Bolt saying that there is the possibility his 100m WR could be broken by Coleman this 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
He said that the new track in Tokyo is very solid and fast. You have to count the wind factor talking about times also.
Coleman is not in his prime yet, considering usually prime is around 27/28 for sprinters, if he stays out of injuries and always improving each year, I can see him beating 9.58 Bolt WR in right weather condition with good tailwind and fast track in the future.

Bolt's records will be broken eventually but probably not by anyone anytime soon. It'll probably be done by a guy who's got a similar build/physique to Bolt, maybe even more extreme. Like 6'6 or 6'7 but crazy fast twitching muscles. When LeBron James first came into the NBA, people were shocked by his overall size and athleticism at the SF position, until Giannis came along and added more inches of height and wingspan while matching LeBron's overall athleticism.
Surprised you didn't mention the leg length difference.. Bolts 6.5 with that speed makes him a real freak, in the best possible way.
The reason leg length isn't mentioned is because people who know what they're talking about understand that leg length (amongst humans) makes zero difference to your speed. The myth is that long legs equate to larger strides, they don't. Assuming you're sprinting properly and not overstriding, your foot will strike under your COM (centre of mass), you don't use long legs to 'reach' forward. That's called overstriding.
Stride length is determined by how much force you're able to apply into the ground. Usain Bolt applies greater force, giving him a larger stride length and has the ability to hold that speed over a longer distance and decelerate more gradually, thus, he has superior top-end speed.

I was only 5.6 and while I'd be in a great position coming off the bend, in the last 30m they would enivitably make up the distance. The 60m and 100m was better for me. I believe Bolts 200m will never be broken.

Have you guys noticed that the fastest athletes don't have much bend when their legs hit the ground. The fastest sprinter's legs look like they are stiff on contact. I guess stiffness = more force which = higher velocity

This guy broke down the times well. He ended with the conclusion that in order to beat Bolt's time, Coleman needs to run more relaxed. That is true. However, another secret is to run more symetrical so as not to bleed off momentum. Hardly any sprinter runs symetrical. The most symetrical sprinter I have seen was Tryvon Bromell.
That is very true, symmetry is a good thing but most sprinters are asymmetrical due to different leg strength and leg length. Coleman is much more asymmetrical than Bolt. Bromell looks very smooth compared to Coleman, still, he is asymmetrical too.

I put it down to his low weight which gives him a big advantage in the acceleration phase. Its incredibly rare to find a sprinter who sprints symetrically. I like these vids but some of the data is a little off. Coleman's splits are taken from high speed video cameras while Bolt's quoted times are LAVEG laser times, which are slightly slower than camera splits due to the way the laser is targeted, especially over the first half of the race. The official biomechanical report of the IAAF for 2009 used high speed cameras as well as laser and clocked Bolt at 6.29s at 60m and got his average speed during 60-80m interval as 20m/1.61s = 12.42m/s, suggesting he went even higher somewhere in the middle of that interval. These are quite significant differences when discussing these tiny margins. I would suggest using these official times as they are consistent for both sprinters and do change speeds and intervals quite significantly in a 100m context. Coleman at his best is very close to Bolt for 60m but simply isn't capable of matching Bolt's second half due to his physical limitations and nobody else will match Bolt til somebody of similar freakish physical characteristics and abilities comes along.

From the IAAF's biomechanical report of the Berlin final, they actually got Bolt at 6.29s at 60m with a 0.14s reaction time. It's mind boggling that this 6'5" guy weighing around 210lbs is a faster starter than Ben Johnson on the juice...As you say, more than ten years later that 9.58 is still from the future, nobody has all the necessary elements to genuinely challenge it.

60m "split" is not the same as a 60m indoor time. A 60m "split" is going to be .10 seconds better and can be even another .1 or .2 due to wind and/or weather.

The Way to Win Even Usain Bolt said his ultimate goal was to run 9.4 and sub 19 in the 200 but he did not reach them. If you look at the other great sprinters Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay, they are both similar heights to Coleman and body types. Even they could barely go sub 9.7. Coleman is already older than Bolt was when Bolt ran 9.58 and 19.19. It is highly unlikely that someone at his height will break the WR but I think he is capable of a high 9.6, probably a 9.67 at best. But there’s no way he will run a 9.5 and I’m not hating when I say that.
true but I’m also a realist and the way I see it: Colman is a tremendous starter BUT doesn’t have to top end speed like bolt and also can’t maintain the speed needed to break the WR. What made bolt so dominant is that when everybody else in the field is losing speed around 70 meters, Bolt has the afterburners on.

I always hear people say so and so has a chance to beat Bolt's record, or Coleman has the 60m WR and therefore has a good shot, but in reality the fastest 60m is also by Bolt when he ran his 9.58. If you don't have Bolt's top speed/speed endurance you'd legit have to be a 6.2x 60m runner to stand a chance. Another good comparison is Bolt's 9.69 to anyone else, he beat is chest and SLOWED down and ran a 9.69, so if your best is slower than 9.70 going all out, then Bolt in his prime can beat you while slowing down on purpose... even 9.7x runners aren't close to Bolt. Blake and Gay were the closest and even they weren't just a hair behind him, it was still a large margin.
Exactly. According to iaaf points, 6.25 is better than 9.58. Coleman has to get a time of 6.25 outdoor to even have some CONSIDERATION of breaking the world record. The thing is even if Coleman runs that, his finish isn't good enough and it's extremely rare for a guy to have a completely well rounded race. Coleman's 6.32 outdoor in his 2019 doha 9.76 race, is as impressive as 9.69 in points and his 3.44 finish is as impressive as a 9.83, which is as impressive as a 19.7 200m time. To beat the record you need split times of 6.25+3.32 and the only people that had the slightest chances to break it were blake and gay.

That 2017 world Championship 100 meters was very slow, but if you look at all of Coleman's races you can see that his speed decreases at around the 80 meters mark..

In my suggestion, maybe you could try a “fastest last 40m” list of elite sprinters who broke 3.40 or even 3.35. The last 40m capability shows the real “running limit” and the “definite speed”. Coleman never broke 3.40. He took so much advantage of high acceleration. But when we talk about cheetah, antelope or even a Porsche 911, we mainly talk about the top end speed capability, but not just merely the acceleration time. So even as the current NO1 sprinter and a world champ, as for now, Coleman could have no match to the “fan-five” in their primes: Bolt, Blake, Gay, Gatlin, Powell. All of the fab five broke 3.40 for the last 40m and hit faster top end speed than 0.83s/10m. Coleman has no way to achieve that at the current moment. Coleman literally maximize his potential and capability of running sub 9.8 (9.79, 9.76), with a 60-40m split equation format of 6.36+3.43, 6.32+3.44. His top end speed is his weakness. If Coleman wants to near sub 9.6 like Berlin Bolt, with Coleman’s current format, he needs to run 6.17+3.43, or faster. Subtracting the standard reaction time 0.150, Coleman litterally needs to break a sub6.0 for the first 60m for “definite running time”, FAT. Come on
