Fantastic lesson!! You’re the first person I’ve seen who breaks out the melody notes and then shows how to build around it. You have helped my understanding tremendously and reinvigorated my practicing. Thank you for taking the time to put this together in such a clear and understandable way.
I absolutely LOVE this style of teaching. I'm brand new to the banjo, and this is by far the best method I've seen out there. Thank you! I appreciate you doing this.
Really liking this! It is a song I have been wanting to learn for a bit now and the timing is perfect, I was thinking i should learn something new. Love your method of teaching how to fish rather than handing us a fish... thank you!
Thank you so much for this. Im a singer and a flutist. But i only held a banjo for the 1st time yesterday. My husband is a really talented shredder on guitar. When he came home and heard me playing a simple version of this, he was extremely impressed. Oh yeah. And i cant play guitar either. So...thank you.
I have a banjo safely locked in its case growing old in the corner of the room. Had a few goes at teaching myself with cds/dvds, etc, so it has seen the light of day . But always it goes back in its case and back in the corner of the room until the next time i try to play it. This is going to change things for me completely. I'm so happy i found your site. Thank you for taking the time to teach us 👍.
Really love how you have broken this all down. I fumble with the drone notes but am slowly picking it up. Thank you for you help and making this video.
This song has great meaning for me and I absolutely love the this lesson. I just started learning the banjo 3 weeks ago and this is a little advanced for now but I am saving it to tackle a little at a time. Big thank you for this.
Great style of teaching. Be gd if you have a video on picking pattern on country roads. I am a beginner teaching my self at age 70. Thank you. You are good.
A great tutorial! Moreover, an actual 5-string banjo tutorial without finger-picks! This, I believe, gives the fingers more 'intimacy' with the strings. By the way, am I the only banjo picker who also plays the banjo, like finger-style guitar, using the 3-fingers/thumb method? I just started playing the banjo that way and I've gotten better at it. I also play 2-finger/thumb method (without picks) and am coming along quite well. Thanks so much for being such a good teacher as well as coming across as a really nice guy!
Thanks! Yeah, playing without picks is definitely a more enjoyable experience, plus the tone is better for solo playing, imo. Appreciate your comments!
I just purchased a banjo a while back, haven't learned anything on it yet but I think I will make this my first song...I do play guitar so it shouldn't be too difficult. Thanks for the tutorial
Very impressive. Picking without finger picks. I've been playing banjo for 13 or so years. I also play guitar. Mostly finger picking style. I don't really enjoy going with out picks on the banjo.
Love this, makes it easier to play and start off but ive downloaded the tab and it doesnt cover the whole song, do you have the full tab available with the melody notes for the chorus and verses and bridge please?
A solo break on this song would typically be played on the chorus (which is the tab that’s reviewed in the video), and the you’d play backup on the other parts (following the chord progression). Were you thinking of playing it all as an instrumental?
Wow, what an amazing instructor you are! I would like to learn to play a cross between clawhammer and fingerstyle together is their such a thing? I like doing them both.. What should I sign up for? To learn first?
This is a kind of silly question (perhaps?) but, when doing the chorus, do you do the normal picking pattern while holding the mentioned chords, or do you vary the picking pattern to 'match' the chords? Thanks!
the session man that played banjo on Country roads in 1971 was Eric Weissberg, He also played banjo on soundtrack for Deliverance.....he was a busy banjo er . this post has nothing to do with the tutorial
You lost me on the second part.😂 I never played an instrument but would try this before any others. Afraid to buy a banjo and then lose patients and not use it. However, I am retired so maybe have the extra time to learn.

I like the way you teach. Thanks. Just started playing 5 string banjo a week ago and learned a lot from that

Best tutorial ever, very useful. It finally all makes sense now. Thanks !
Is there a melody version of this

Excellent tutorial. Thanks from Scotland! 🪕🎼
Love your video! Also, getting the tab was super easy, thankyou.
Awesome 👍👍🌟
Great lesson!! I liked how you broke it down!! Thank you!!
My pleasure!
Brilliant
I like your video, can you try to make a "Should've been a cowboy" by Toby Keith tutorial?
Thank you

Claw hammer.
What banjo would you recommend someone who's just starting out to get?
Deering good time

351313/3514151 roll patterns
Are you not wearing picks?!
Nope. Picks are great for playing bluegrass with a full band, otherwise I prefer the tone of bare fingers. :)
Too many
