Hunter, I've been sitting on the sidelines as this CG vs. Practical FX debate has raged. At Stan Winston School we believe the best approach to creating "Real" creatures is to use a combination of techniques, just as was done to such great effect in Jurassic Park. CGI is not "better" than practical. Practical is not "better" than CGI. It's when you use them TOGETHER that you can create magic. -Matt

I've been wanting to go into special effects makeup and design for some time now..but with the rise of CGI, it's discouraging to see so many movies go towards the computer animated effects. I will always remain a huge fan of the real life special effects..Jurassic Park was one of those movies that inspired me and seeing the behind the scenes making of the creatures just blows my mind.

    Start cursing people out? No.
We appreciate your point of view... and in many ways, we agree with you. But do NOT troll here.

I hate it when people say CGI sucks. CGI is bad, yes, but ONLY when it is overused. CGI is good for quick movements like running and jumping, whereas animatronics are good for slow, stationary movements, like looking around, biting(sometimes), roaring, etc. It’s when you use an even mix of the two methods that the effects look amazing.

Exactly, people always say that, but don't realize that Jurassic Park itself used some early CGI alongside

That's the thing, "@@lunapyrope9683," here in America, people are entitled to say whatever the hell they feel like saying.
Whether anyone else agrees, disagrees, is annoyed is irritated, whatever.
People are allowed to form their OWN opinions, and express those opinions openly, in the, "public square," without fear of retribution, regardless of what ANYONE else thinks.
Men and Women have given their lives so that we all have that same protection under the law, and just like you have the right to say that you, "hate," this or, "love," that, other people have the right to as well.
I may absolutely HATE what somebody has to say, but I will defend to the death their absolute right to say it!

I'm here because I'm watching Pumpkin Head, directed by Stan and it's a cut above the usual slasher and I just found out he died at a pretty early age. I just wanted to see more about him. He terrorfied my young son in Aliens. Nothing like it existed before. When I was watching it, I knew I was watching movie history. Not just the social events, but the natural acting. Actors talking over each other, etc. Before that actors took turns. Just groundbreaking all around. Jurassic Park was flawless. Man was a genius. Too bad he didn't live longer.

I used to love watching these special effects / filmmaking documentaries almost more than the movies themselves. Such artistry goes into creatures and characters. If any of you picked up the Hobbit on DVD. There is a 2 hour video blog on the making of the movie, and it is awesome! Hobbit got robbed by Life of Pi, and Les Miserables at the Oscars (especially by Les Miserables for costumes)

I always wondered about safety on set with such gigantic animatronics when I see those videos. Were the T-Rex' teeth made of rubber or... everyone on set had to be extra-careful?

Saw Jurassic Park in the cinema today and I'm still in awe of, not only, what Stan Winston's team was able to pull off 20 years ago, but also what Dennis Muren and ILM managed to create digitally. The effects holds up to this day and the film is entertainment at it's very best. If you haven't seen JP on the big screen, don't miss this opportunity. The 3D may not have been neccessary but it was the best 3D-conversion I've seen so far and it did not impact the film in a bad way.

John-- The problem is finding the right balance between animatronics/CGI and the live action sets/actors/props shot on film. If animatronics/CGI look too realistic people are thrown out of the movie experience because they start asking themselves "How did they do that?". But if it is not real enough you create an uncanny valley effect: When human replicas look and act almost, but not perfectly, like actual human beings, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. - Samuel

  • @filmflim

Did I say it was easy? No, I meant that we don't see the "real deal" with visual effects anymore. The industry has become some complacent and over-saturated with CGI, that very little of it is impressive these days. I meant no disrespect to the work of creating computer-generated imagery, and if that is your profession and I offended you, then I apologize.

  • @stab2486

All you need to know is how to use 3D programs? Just looking at the interface of them can be mindbending on its own. Just because it takes a different set of skills and knowledge doesn't mean it's easier. And they both draw from the same set of fundamental skills, in anatomy, proportion, form, lighting, composition, and design.
