The size of the pool is exactly the real issue. Getting a specific ratio of a certain demographic is not feasible if there aren't enough qualified candidates. Look at the Marvel show, Echo. Disney actually had to search for an indigenous woman who was not just deaf, but also an amputee. Acting talent wasn't even considered.
A person doesn't need to be deaf in real-life to play one in a movie, but it was more about the representation than the entertainment value. The entertainment industry has one job: to entertain us. So please, "Cheque Your Messaging!"
Some of my favorite actors were not white. (Samuel L Jackson, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Laurence Fishburne, etc.) Success in showbiz is hard. I remember when Rachel Zegler was supposed to be the next big thing, but she wrecked her own image with her unscripted commentary regarding Snow White. There's a girl who should have chequed her privilege. She got hired for a couple Disney and WB movies and she became an instant diva.

Is there racism, both benign and overt? Yes, of course there is, but It's funny how, people of color from other countries come and do BETTER than those who are born here! Yes, the abnormal lives and behaviors were ALWAYS a part of Hollywood and the entertainment world around the world! Yes< I said ABNORMAL! If it were the norm and what humans were supposed to do, then we would be made to reproduce that way and we aren't. So to say that only now there's a problem with the alphabet soup crowd isn't represented in the entertainment world is ludicrous. But a extremely small minority is now trying to dictate what the rest have to comply with.

How I got in film. Started doing background which rolled into stand-in gigs which also morphed into casting jobs on the side. I put myself out there and showed my capabilities. When I decided to jump into the production department I walked up to a AD and asked for an open PA position. Guess what, I got it. But, I still had to do background work because just working on one show doesn't always get you on another. So each time I was on set I asked. After 26 years I've worked on, I don't even know how shows. Point is, I put myself out there and went after what I wanted. The AD on that first film told me, he gave me the job because I asked for it.

Part of the problem is people are so willing to accept the "Well, back in the day..." argument about opportunity. My friend in the TV industry graduated Ryerson back in 93. While attending, he was one of the full throated NDP supporters on pay equity and the like. Once he got out and started auditioning for work, he actually had a fresh change of perspective and would call to point out how much it'd bother him to go out for a 2 person commercial, but even then (30+ years ago), it was "We need one black guy and one white guy". He'd then point out how there'd be 100+ white guys there and only 10 black guys, complaining "Why do we need to do this with EVERY commercial? It's not real and it's kinda unfair".
Of course within a couple years, when he found a steady gig, he went right back to the whole progressive dogma. At that point it wasn't hurting him or his pocketbook.

These unfounded, baseless, generalised accusations of privilege really piss me off. I'm a white, straight male with severe health issues who lives near the poverty line. I grew up in a very poor household, and after leaving school I worked several shitty jobs before finding an ok one where I worked as much overtime as I could for years to save up for a place at university. I got accepted and paid for it all myself from my own money, spending everything I had. Despite my worsening health problems I did very well in my courses and graduated with a biology degree. Since then I've struggled to find even part time work, partially because of my health, but also because there are just hardly any jobs for a biologist. My "CIS white male privilege" has not bypassed the lack of jobs or my health issues, and I have a low standard of living compared to pretty much anyone else. It's not pretty. The people in that video look way more privileged and comfortable in their lives than me. I utterly resent being told I am "privileged" when I've had to fight for everything I have, and am still struggling. These people have way more than I ever will. They can go to hell with their sanctimonious preaching. It's just fantasy from ideological zealots.

I current work as an editor for a nationally syndicated TV show in the US. I started editing by working on a zero-budget gay music video show for free. It was a symbiotic relationship; the producer got an editor to help him make a show (when he had no budget to afford one) and I got the experience of editing a series. Since then I have told young editors of various races and genders the same thing; in the beginning work for free, but only for a producer with no budget. You get the experience, they get the editor. One of my most accomplished students was a woman. However, I am a straight white male so I must be racist and misogynous.

Grew up in the 90s, some of the biggest stars were black, Blade was my thing, Spawn was a close second. Whoopie Goldberg made huge waves here with sister act, Eddie Murphy was hilarious in several comedies, Morpheus was the coolest character in the Matrix, Will smith was a bad ass in Independence day.
Then you had the Asian classics, like couching tiger hidden dragon, I had a huge crush on coco lee singing A love before time, especially the mandarin version. Bruce Lee was a household name and Jackie Chan is still beloved to this day for his many excellent movies.
Now people steer clear of DEI, I won't go if I smell the DEI rat near any movie or show, none of my friends will go either, when people with actual talent rose to the top, we had actual diversity, when it started to get shoved down peoples throats by Gen Z writers who never experienced anything more dramatic than getting fact checked that one time on twitter started writing the stories, it all went into the dump.

Your comment about "diversity," and jobs in certain fields like STEM really hit home. I was recently talking to a machinist friend of mine who was commenting that while their own company is actively trying to be more "diverse" (probably mandated) they also had the issue that NO women apply for jobs that wasn't office work. He also noted very few if any people "of color" apply for jobs like his. It wasn't like they were actively gate-keeping these positions but the people who are **interested** in these technical, labor intensive and frankly, dangerous positions all seem to look the same.

I reminded of the provob misery loves company (1670). The original phrase was "misery loves miserable company."
Groups of miserable people spread misery were every they go.
Equity of socialism is shared misery through restricting liberty.
Liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
A free society cannot tolerate unequal applications of justice and treatment by government, making equity a threat to liberty.
Liberty has been viewed as protecting the unfettered expression of individuality in all its forms, equality as a set of limitations on human action. R. H. Tawney observes that: "Equality implies the deliberate acceptance of social restraints on individual expansion.
“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
'The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.' -Winston Churchill

I know when I was growing up in a trailer eating government cheese, I felt so much comfort that being a white boy meant I would just be given everything I wanted. It really made up for my drunk dad being God knows where.
This is why I hate this stuff so much. It both minimizes the work I had to put in to achieve anything AND, at the same time, stifles anyone who isn't a straight, white, male by simultaneously telling them they CAN'T succeed just because they aren't straight, white and male and when they do inevitably fail (because we ALL fail) at some point that it MUST be because they aren't a straight, white, male. When you fail as a "SWM", you can only blame yourself and work to improve yourself, but when you aren't, it's much easier to believe it's not you that failed, but it's the "SWM" that kept you from succeeding, so what's the point of trying to improve yourself, right?
It's literally never been a worse time to be a "SWM", so does that mean I get to blame anything that happens to me now on the fact I'm a "SWM"? Does no one see this ISN'T equality OR equity? This is precisely why "Affirmative Action" was ALWAYS so controversial and apparently did NOTHING to help the problem if you listen to these people. It's ridiculous we are treating the world like is 1924 and not 2024. Back in 2005 NO ONE was thinking race, gender or sexuality was a real hinderance anymore, yet today we act like slavery ended last week!

All this is doing, is to polarize people.
I know, that I've moved from left to right on some social issues. I never thought I'd be conservative, but there it is.
Ofc, some issues are non-movable, like the environment and poverty, but the fluffy social engineering - I'm pretty conservative on that now.

I seem to recall most competent history courses I've had in school teaching major class and political struggles of the past as essentially boiling down to fighting for meritocracies from wildly unbalanced social structures. Funny how that all started to change in a certain part of the 20th century.

That is hysterically funny. When I was in college in the late 1970s, I had a friend studying drama who was male and straight - a definite minority in the drama program. More of the women were straight at that time so he had a LOT of fun…

Pretty obvious, but self-awareness isn't the strong suit of people like this. If they had even an ounce, they'd realize the only people who use BIPOC/POC are the only people the term is ever used to mean, black, or what the CCP calls "white monkeys."

Oh man. I had to pause this a couple of times to get my blood pressure down. Like you I worked in the world of stage and screen for the majority of my life. As far as I could see, there was and is no other industry as open-mnded, accepting and progressive on a day-to-day basis. The philosophy was simple: you got talent, you work. You make me money, wou work, end of story. These narcissistic hacks have been told their whole childhoods that they're special and unique, and now they think they're owed something. They simply can't imagine that they're not getting work because they're untalanted, uncreative hacks, it must be that they're being held down. And they're savy enough to see that playing the victim card let's them jump the very long queue of their more talented competition!

Some people are so miserable with their lot in life that they have to put down others in order to raise themselves to feel better about it. These are people deserving of our pity but we should not enable or condone this behavior. Such behavior can only hurt them and no one else as it just turns back onto them such energies as they put out.

“Privilege“ is a reverse euphemism for laziness. They just don’t want to have to put in the effort but they wanna have all the things other people have. They worked hard for it, try working hard for something and nine times out of 10 you’ll get it. But genuine failure does exist so prepare your mind.

This is just so incredibly racist. It belittles every struggle people fave on their careers, it paints all people as simple passengers with no agency in their careers
It even manages to be casually patronising, by insinuating that todd is dumb and could never have got his position without his race, gender and sexuality.
This video illustrates the mentality of:
"You see that successful person - that should have been me" versus "one day that will be me"
This is just a grift profiting from some people's greed & envy, riding on a current cultural trend and some people's guilt over being successful.

They hastily assumed that everyone else lives in a similar bubble to their own and use that assumption as a mistaken basis in an attempt to gaslight you. All that does is insult and alienate the allies that they may have sought. It’s an overreach. Clearly they don’t know their targets well enough. That is, unless some higher ups behind them are actually playing 4D chess and in truth want to sow mistrust between different ethnicities with the entire ESG/DEI hoopla. It might be by design. In that case they’ve had some unpleasant success.

All that does is alienate the allies that they sought to win over. Clearly they don’t know their target demographic well enough. Not exactly uniting unless that is by intentional design by some higher ups. In that case job well done.

The problem with Canadian TV and film is People of Talent, including people with creativity beyond pushing Canadian content approved by the government. I was a kid in the 90s and I knew Canadian TV was subpar in content and creativity in comparison to American Television. It's only gotten worse.
