I really need to practice this IRL. GPS has just become so convenient that “I know how to nav with VORs” but i really need a practice session to get the rust off. I literally have not used VOR for nav in 10+ yrs. Thanks for the refresher.
I find the old steam gauges intuitively give you better spatial awareness once you’re proficient. I did my PPL, IFR, ME, COM on these because none of the rental planes back then had a GPS. When using the needles you know where you are in your head, rather than looking at some tiny screen. GPS is easier I guess but the only experience I have with that is in flight sims and it took me a long time to use it and not just revert back to my old habits of tuning in the VOR.
