Bird and Magic came to a struggling league and gave it a massive spark. They were young kids who made the game exciting as they started the golden age of basketball. When Jordan came along it was a wrap with those two guys dominating and the young Jordan taking it to another level. • @paulazzar8936
      @paulazzar8936 3 года назад +2

Larry's passing was not to show off like Magic making a simple pass look fancy. Larry's passing was divine, with unequaled court vision and awareness. He span your head around wondering how he could see the play, the player then time the delivery to perfection. I was a pro soccer player at the time and never cared about basketball until I saw Larry play. To me Larry's skills. especially playing WITHOUT the ball, his vision of game can be carried into any team sport and I advised soccer players to watch him if they want to improve their team playing... He was a treasure to basketball.

The shooting percentage was lower back then in part because the NBA only adopted the 3-point shot in Bird's rookie year. Without the 3-point line, the main focus was on more physical play, getting in close, and making high-percentage easier shots. Without the three point shot, the only real reason to shoot a long shot was because you literally couldn't get in close for a reliable shot. So none of the players really spent their time refining their shooting, because it was not worth the time. Even with the 3 pointer, it took some time for teams to adapt. Even Bird, known as a good shooter, rarely actually attempted 3 point shots in games. It just hadn't really been established yet.

Bird was probably the first great outside shooter who wasn't a little guy.
Back then most players wouldn't dare shoot a 3. Most teams only two or 3 players who even had the green light to shoot from outside, and they would only do so maybe 3 or 4 times a game. You could say that they couldn't shoot back then, but that's kind of misleading. Players didn't have the same range that they do today, but what range they did have, they were much better at. The short and midrange games back then were superb! Much better than today. Every player was pretty much automatic out to about 15-16 feet if they were open. Today the midrange game is garbage.

One significant event in Larry's life as to why he quit Indiana and Bobby Knight. First, he was in an environment that was to large. His hometown of French Lick had 2,000 population. Larry had been very quiet and was teased for not speaking up. Then he reached that gangly, body type before reaching six feet, nine inches.
There were six siblings and they were very poor. His father was his best friend. Most did odd jobs around the neighborhood and helped the family. Larry *idolized* his father who did father/son activities with him like fishing and watched and encouraged his ball playing. He practiced with him on basketball courts. But his dad was also an alcoholic. They tinkered with small motors and repaired lawn mowers, etc. His parents were broken up and his mother by then had to work two jobs to help get food on the table. His dad had a very spotty child support going on.
Many don't know why Bird went to French Lick after quitting college and I've never seen it mentioned. "The Hick from French Link" population about 2,000.
Larry got a phone call from his mom to tell him that his dad was dead. He had been drunk and called her saying he was a worthless husband and father who couldn't support his children. Sometimes the typical talk of you'd be better w/o me. Her words to change his mind didn't work. He hung up and shot himself in the head.
Larry's world was now confused and he just felt he needed to go home. He even drove a garbage truck to get money for his mom. When it was time to go back it sure wasn't going to a large Indiana team. And the legend started.
In order to appreciate Larry's talent one must realize the GREAT NUMBER OF HOURS that Bird practiced. He would mark out every angle down to the three point lane and land baskets. Or kept trying. Game days at 6:00 you could often see Bird out on court shooting baskets. Or doing laps around the bottom row. Why I don't know.
After Bird beat the Pistons when Isiah Thomas couldn't inbound the ball for an easy win (Bird got it and tipped it to a teammate) I doubt Thomas couldn't live that one down. Bird *despised* Bill Lambier because he said he was a dirty player trying to hook feet while going up for a basket. I mean Bird had already blown out his Achilles twice. With Lambieer it led to a fight in Detroit (where the fans are ignorant). Just ask Indiana Pacers.
He tackled him from behind and suckered him and then he had three Pistons on his bad back
But at this time when reverse racism hit him from Dennis Rodman & Isiah Thomas. [Maybe because how he showed him up to lose with that weak inbound pass that Bird stole] IDK And Rodman is just an asshole. Rodman said the only reason Bird got the MVP is because he's white and Thomas agreed.
Too bad people in the training room heard that. But I doubt Bird would have given a rip about it. Anyone saying that Rodman or Lambier is one of the greatest? Just themselves maybe.
Teammates were stunned to see him out running laps around the lowest tier of the court they were at. He would just say cryptically, "I'm checking angles." He may as well been a cross country athlete.
He also said "I'm not paid to play up until the last five minutes of the game. *I'm paid for the last shot of the game*
I looked it up and Bird's net worth is $76,000,000.

2:38 You mentioned the shooting percentage not being that great in this era, and to some extent that is true. But...you need to dig into the reasons. Notice all the hand-checking, and much tougher defense in general. Being able to keep your hand on the opponent is a huge advantage for the defense that modern players don't have to deal with. The hand checking rule didn't get its first modification until 1994, and then got even stricter in 2004. So players in the 70s and 80s faced much harder defenses. There was a LOT more contact in general allowed in the Bird/Magic era. The whole point of changing the rules was to facilitate higher scoring, and not being able to slow your opponents down, which might have been good for the NBA, but made scoring a lot easier.

You knew it was going to happen and he never failed to deliver. He was perfect in every aspect of the game. You just have to see it to believe it. If you want to see greatness look up the game that he played the 76'ers and held Dr J to only 6 points and jay had someone hold Larry down while he tried to punch him in the face and then all hell broke loose. The reason most couldn’t shoot really had to do with 2 aspects of old school basketball. 1. They didn’t grow up with a 3 pt shoot. It was totally new.
    2. Coaches had a lot of control and were very conservative. If you pulled a deep shot as a big man, you coming out the game. Players didn’t have the freedom to shoot or even learn how to shoot effectively.

I have a top 4 not 5, too many great ones to pick a five but my top 4 are and not in any particular order are Lebron, Bird, Jordan and Magic. You have too understand that the NBA was almost gone like on it's last leg and Bird and Magic arrived at about the same time and literally saved basketball, they're legends. In my book Larry Bird is the greatest passer of the ball in NBA history, hands down ! He was playing chess out there while everyone else was playing checkers. Bird today would be a combination of Nowitzki and Luka, with major elements of Durant and Chris Paul's game included. It is possible that the only case against Bird as the greatest of all time is longevity (Bird only played 13 seasons, and was only healthy in the first nine of them). Those 9 seasons? Rookie of the Year (over Magic), then 3x 2nd place for MVP, then 3 consecutive MVP's (84 to 86), then 2 50-40-90 seasons. LeBron, for example, has had a better career because he has been great for far longer--arguably the league's best player every season since 2006. There are obviously cases to make for Jordan, Wilt, Magic, Russell and Kareem. But no one had a higher peak than Bird.

I'm 43 so saw them both in prime with my eyes. Two best SF ever imho Bird and Lebron. Bird was that good. Lebron is that good for you other "old" timers out here 😎

People here have said lots of things about Bird and his greatness and I believe Bird is in the conversation for the greatest of all time, The thing about Bird that I have not seen about any other great players was the number of times Bird would actually tell the opposing team what the actual play was and where he was going to shot from and they still could not stop him. Byron Scott describes it the best . ruclips.net/video/h2iyF5dgiIo/видео.html

ESPN did a three part special on the Celtics Lakers rivalry of the 80s. It’s a must watch for a basketball fan.

When majic made that shit and rolled it down his shoulders, I believe that’s the coolest thing Ive ever seen, but Larry was still the best. And a decent man to boot
