  • Woodworkers have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. When ordinary forest companies get stuck, the specialists are called. They remove storm damage in the forest, saw at breathtaking heights and cut down giant rotten trees before the dreaded bark beetle can spread uncontrollably. Whether with the help of a harvester, rope crane or 'flying saw' - you are well equipped for all locations.

We salvaged cedar shake bolts which are lengths of wood cut in shake mills. The wood of that type is used for roofing. Stacked in piles and a rope choker that allows the helicopter to lift them from the swampy areas in the forest. The men earned their wage from the scale of the wood value and paid on that percentage.... many did very well.

Ive bn a timber driver for 20 years and have worked in the forestry sector for years before that . In sawmills and then working for a contractor harvesting and removing timber using overhead cables called in uk skylining its a dangerous job . All forestry work can be dangerous . Its as dangerous at times as u make it . But theres allways a danger in anything u do . Ive had a few close shaves over the years . U never take what ur doin for granted or it will bite back . Big time . I hated havin to climb trees but i got to like being up there still hated goin up and down .

Worked here in NZ at Skylining.
      Dressing the pole.
Running out the dead men that hold the blocks that the main line runs though, from the winch down and around the whole working area.
Cross cutting, breaker out you name it we once were thought here by our own Woodsmen Schools 2 in the Nth Island and 2 in the deep South now all obsolete these past 40 years.
A great job great mates and a good honest days work done for a days wages.
Loved it, never ever thought it was hard work back then unless one went to work with the odd hang over then yaa that could be a killer in more the one way :) cheers loved the doco things here I've never used in our pines let alone the native.

At 11 minutes, he says "the trees are dying of old age." He is wrong. If you pay attention, you can see that the trees are dying because they are being strangulated by vines. When a vine grows up a tree, given enough time, the vine always wins, and the tree always dies. This is simply the most basic plant physiology 101 that any arborist would tell you. If the train maintenance crew had simply taken a pair of snippers and cut those vines at the base, they would have released their grip on the trees and fallen away in a short time. Because of the gross ignorance of the train maintenance staff, now they have to hire expensive helicopter saws. Like the old saying goes, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Shame on the train maintenance monkeys.
