  • Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree has been met with mixed reception from gamers because of its unforgiving difficulty but, I feel like I quit too soon, and many others may find themselves in the same situation I was in - let's talk about how to I plan to change that and maybe you can too!
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is set in the Realm of Shadow and gives players the task of searching for Miquella the Empyrean. During that quest, their characters will face challenging bosses and can access numerous new weapons and armor while customizing their character freely.

I love it (overall), but I do question if the decision of making you ‘rank up’ your Defenses with the shadow items you have to explore for (many of them, at least). No other Fromsoft game has had that kind of mechanic added in for a DLC, afaik ?
It was a bold move - indeed - but I wonder if that was a big reason some people have been annoyed by the DLC, at points ?

I wouldn't say to hard but I would say unfair. Idc that the bosses hit hard but I do care they they barely give you time to retaliate, barely give you time to heal. And that I feel forced to use summons. The main bosses are to aggressive. They are more frustrating then fun and i have to result to using a tanky, blow trading, stance breaking build or an op, cheese build that will eventually get nerfed... This coming from me, a guy whos beat the dlc and all the bosses and is a soul player through and through

Glad to see you back in the game! I haven't fought any bosses yet as I've been too busy exploring the world, learning its secrets, and taking in bits of new lore info. This really is the type of game where you can turn the camera a whole 360 degrees and find an entire new section.

Lono, I suggest going after the Blessings before face Rellana, and Co-op on Bayle the Dread. These guys are Tough. There's also a black knight at the Western Nameless Masoleum that don't allow you to summon, and he hits like a truck, but trust me, with good strategy, you can win. Good luck bro.

Even though I haven't played much of Elden Ring, if at all, this Game is still Absolutely Amazing and to be honest, I do like a challenge but any Soulsborne game like Bloodborne, I knew that I had to take breaks from it because of how much that game really frustrated me to no end but I did go back and finally finished it. I finished it late Sunday night and absolutely loved it. Honestly if you engage with the Scadutree Blessing system it wil feel a lot better once you get a few under your belt. ER had a glaring issue in how to handle dlc balancing. There is so much optional content that it becomes difficult to tune for the average player. If they tuned for the top end levels, it would leave others having to grind runes for hours to try and keep up. If they tuned for the lowest level they risk the game being mocked for being too easy. The fragment system essentially sets us all back to zero, giving that sense of progression and a dangerous world like the first time we stepped foot into Limgrave. And it works quite well. It’s also optional, so people can now tune difficulty on their own terms. And if anyone is stuck, I’m sure there are guides out there as to where you can find these and you can just run around picking a few up.
I went in at lvl 220 NG+ 4, no player or NPC summons (much to Hornsent’s dismay) and used spirit ashes as needed. This is a choice though and players absolutely should use them if it helps. I don’t get other players trying to create some kind of stigma around this. They’re a major mechanic and should be treated as such. And by the end I was lvl 18 Scadutree Blessing and lvl 9 Revered Spirit Ash Blessing. I was doing 1800 base damage and had a whopping 73 percent damage negation. This was also aided bu me having a greatsword wielding tank. I use the Pearldrake Talisman (the +3 variant is in the dlc as well) and the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talksman which both enormously boost both non physical and physical damage negation. At times I felt OP even, one shotting a few bosses (one attempt not one hit), and most times I just felt comfortable. But as you level up here it will feel a lot better as you go.
Good on you though for returning. That’s awesome and totally commendable. Sometimes a step back is all we need and we’ve all been there. I think once you find your groove and gain some Scadutree levels you’ll be totally fine. And a lot of the harder bosses are optional, so you can kind of pick and choose your battles there.

As someone who beat Elden Ring i didnt get the DLC because of all the backlash and score. Now that i know its just people arent collecting the dlc thing to do dlc stuff i started changing my mind. I like playing magic in games as it feels more fantastical for me and i play games to escape reality .. lol. I got so much shit for it. I was like wait isnt this part of the game. Also there are many bosses that are build to give mages a hard time. Malenia being one of them for me. I had to level up a shield and a sword that based itself on INT instead of ARC, STR, or DEC. And whenever i could blast a spell i would switch over and it made me a better player cause i learned to switch styles. I had to learn to play my way instead of the way others thought was the "right" way to play. The right way to play is the way u have the most fun.

When you’re able to buy other games and have less time on your hands WHY would someone hit their head against a brick wall repeatedly and waste so much time with something like Elden Ring when they can just “move on” and probably even easier say “this game isn’t for me”.

Congratulations, you have now become a "Hardcore From Software" Guy LOL Seriously, I don't think there is a person who has play a From Software Souls game and has not gone through this process. One of the things I love about From games is that they will beat into you taking a step back and changing your approach or slowing and just dying a few times on a boss to learn its patterns. Its great that you are coming back on your terms and in a better mind set cause now you can really dig in enjoy the game from a new perspective.

Here's hoping you go back to Lies of P. I used a summon at every boss after Benedictus. They were fun fights, but after doing the second phases a few times I was like "Okay, let's move on and see what else this game has." But then you get to the Final FINAL boss (let's just say daddy takes off his belt) and there's no summon available. In spite of that, it was by far the best and most well-designed fight of the game. Lies of P's "Sword Saint Isshin" so to speak. Using summons to get that far and then beating that last boss without a summon made my playthrough great.

I think I could be pretty close in saying that all the people saying it's too hard have probably gone straight to the main boss areas instead of exploring and picking up scadutree fragments, the upgrades were added for a reason. I recently killed the dancing lion first try because I dodged while using the npc summon, which will increase the bosses health pool, I used my mimic and used a dragon spell.
Most souls vets use these things. The Elitist camp can play how they want, to spend 5 hours on one boss, I'd rather enjoy the rest of the world.

Brother, I'm a From Soft soulsborne veteran. I've been grinding in these games for far too long. The difficulty of the DLC does not shock me whatsoever. Elden Ring is by far the easiest, most accessible From Soft game ever made. This DLC is purely made for the hardcores. This is a love letter to the GIT GUD crowd. My biggest gripe is the seperate scaling system but I understand why FS created it. I recently just finished 100% Lords of the Fallen and that took 3 entire playthroughs. lol I had to relearn Elden Ring after spending so many months in Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen. I enjoy these games by exploring first and Shadow of the Erdtree almost makes you explore just to level up enough to compete. From Soft once again hit it out of the park.
