- Rotopax has become the unofficial symbol of #overlanding, but is it really the ultimate off-road gas can? We compare the Rotopax to two other cans and evaluate them from an off-road vehicle mounted scenario.
When I first built the Truggy, I built a mount for a NATO-style metal Jerry Can. The extra fuel came in handy in remote areas of Utah, but later I switched to a Rotopax fuel and water can. 3 years later, I am still using the system with very few complaints.

I love the race can with the shut off valve mod! It’s a game changer for topping off everything from the logsplitter to the Pietenpol Aircamper 😂
We need to throw the Jerry Can in the mix……🎉
The Jerry Can rusted through and started to leak, scrapped it years ago. The NATO style cans have a separate nozzle which is a pain to store and keep from getting covered in dirt, and always seemed to leak where it attached to the can. I do not miss it at all.
@@ozarkgarage, yeah, I went with Wavian Jerry can’s a few months ago and am second guessing my decision now. I have them mounted to the cowls of my jeep and think, in retrospect, Rotopax would have been a better option.
Let’s see some more of the green jeep!!!
Ask and ye shall receive!
Lol killin me with the Insta for the win!
Very important criteria, and we are always thorough in our reviews.
You should do a detailed video on how to modify your utility jug with a parts list
Coming soon!
One of the earlier comments already referenced my question. I'm a fan of the Jerry can, but I was curious of your thoughts (I understand your response). I wonder if a fill spout similar to your ball valve set up on the farm can would make it all better. I'm also tracking your comment about the metal cans leaking; I fixed that with Caswell tank sealer epoxy. Yea, the Jerry cans are heavier than plastic, but they win the Instagram category on my scorecard. Good channel, Great content, Keep after it!
The only spout I tried for the steel jerry can was the articulating metal type that looks like a cheap exhaust fix. It leaked out between the metal seams. I suppose you could cut the whole thing off and replace it with another spout, but then you still have to store it elsewhere and the can still doesn't vent. I have added twist-style radiator drains to jerry cans for venting, which does work well.
I think the best way to use a NATO-style jerry can is with a big funnel.
More Green Jeep...and Moab!
Working on it!
More Green Jeep!
Can-do!
Durability, leaks?
I haven't had any issues with leaks. The Rotopax seals tight enough that you have to vent it manually on the trail as the temp changes or altitude changes.
yeah, i stopped watching when you mentioned "instagram worthy"..........WtF???
Sarcasm. Clearly you have never seen a rig with rotopax, traction boards that have never been used and a ladder on the back.
