What we learned about the Oliver Jr. Mahogany from this video: 1. You can't say it's not pretty. 2. It's extremely agile. 3. It sounds great while playing Weezer's hit song, "Say It Ain't So."
No idea who twooba is, but I started playing over 15 years ago, there's not much to be gained of the guitar here at a glance. You can tell if the guitar is solid wood (higher end) by looking through the soundhole and seeing if the inside colour/pattern matches the back colour/pattern. You can potentially tell a little about the player by the inclusion of a pickguard (the teardrop shaped plastic bit under the soundhole), more advanced players would leave them out as it's unnecessary for fingerpickers or if you're just skilled, and the pickguard could dampen the vibrations of the topwood/soundboard which is what contributes most to the particular and unique sound of that wood and guitar. No cutaway can be good for either beginners or the more professional players, as a beginner wouldn't need their hands to go that high up that fretboard, but a professional may decide to just deal without a cutaway as its absence also means more soundboard to vibrate to contribute to the tone. More advanced stuff would be to observe wood choice combinations and neck profile/length, nut width etc. but that's beyond the scope of a quick comment xD. That was what I could observe here anyway, thanks for randomly giving me a reason to talk about guitars, I hope you and everybody here have fun. ^_^
I believe the new guitar is a parlor guitar, which originally became popular between the late 19th Century and about 1950. They were played by a lot of blues and folk musicians because they were more affordable. In the 2000s parlor guitars made a comeback, because a lot of guitarists enjoyed their midrange-y tone. Now, please tell me what song you were playing at around 4:00. It's so familiar it's driving me nuts. Is it a Simon & Garfunkel number?
@Tyrion Lannister - Yes, it sounds like their 'Scarborough Fair', but it isn't. But I do know this song also, heard it not long ago even! But what is it?! 😆
You're so refreshing! I know you like acting a little silly and offbeat, which is totally cool, but underneath all of it, you are truly an incredibly talented guitar player, and you have a wonderful singing voice, too!
Seriously considering ordering one of these. The Orangewood reviews I see are very honest and they seem like okay guitar for their price point. Looks cool, too.
Awesome review, what's the first acoustic, picking, song you played at 3:45? Smaller guitars like this are for people with smaller hands, people who can't play a full size, or people who want a portable guitar.
Mahogany guitars are nice. I have a Martin D15M, which is sort of their version of that. I guess their version of that would be the 000, whereas mine is the 00 which is the regular sized one. It's super-light and has a really warm sound. Great for more folky/rootsy stuff. It's my only acoustic right now. At some point I need to get one at the opposite end, like a Taylor or something.
^this, especially the one at 6:00. Not sure if it's Twooba just vibin or a cover of some Weezer/Mac Demarco/Nirvana fusion band. Whatever it was the tempo change at 6:06 was radical
I'm buying an Orangewood in a couple weeks, I'm just deciding which model, Manhattan or Oliver? Totally different sounds. Love your bubbly attitude. Keep it up.
My Morgan lefty was an amazing buy at $250 for a guitar with a truly quality sound, set up to perfection....and easy to play. Don't miss my $1600 Martin. My daughter has their parlor sized guitar.....not as impressive as one might expect given the size and non-solid top.
Hey Twooba, absolutely love ur vids. youre an excellent guitarist and Im curious about the tunes that you played in this video. Are they from a song or is this something you came up with on the top of your head? It sounds really cool and I just wanna learn to play it.
You almost made me buy this guitar on Reverb today, but I didn't, and I'm proud of myself. It is a very beautiful guitar! Also, there's 99.9% IPA that does great at cleaning wax like materials off of non-wood (think glass like) material, and it evaporates really quickly.
