@@jenmurrayxo If you haven't watched it yet. I HIGHLY recommend viewing the extended Director's Cut of James Cameron's "The Abyss." It has groundbreaking practical, miniature, and early photorealistic CG effects that pushed the boundaries of computer animation and digital scanning. Cameron personally designed all new usable underwater gear for divers specifically for the movie. It even features an example of actual liquid oxygen usage for deep diving using a rat... captured for real on camera under technical supervision. They used an underwater set in an unused nuclear power plant. The man is a visionary.

This one is my favorite of all the Lethal Weapon films as well. The stilt house was built expressly for this movie in order to tear it down later in the film. I really loved seeing the friendship develop even more between Riggs and Roger. And I especially love the scene where Riggs tells Trish about the night his wife died. That was a nice moment between them. But I also love this film for introducing me to the song Cheer Down by George Harrison, which plays over the film's closing credits.

"That lady cop" is Jenette Goldstein, who also played John's foster mother in Terminator 2 and Private Vasquez in Aliens. "Hey Vasquez, you ever been mistaken for a man?", "No, have you?"
"Can you take down a helicopter that way?" - It depends where he hits it. He could shoot the pilot. Also, if he hits some of the controls in the front, the pilot could lose control. Fun fact: Even handgun bullets will go through the sheet metal used for vehicle bodies (cars, helicopters, planes), so the metal nose of the helicopter doesn't provide much protection for the instrument panel and controls.
After escaping the straightjacket underwater. Riggs' arm is still dislocated. Dislocated limbs do not function correctly, so realistically, he wouldn't have been able to attack those two guys and slam the car door on that guy's head.

I just realized the short part of the character named Hans was none other than Drake from Aliens - played by Mark Rolston (whom had a much bigger part in Rush Hour). It was fun to see the comedic chops of Joe Pesci as well which made it quite easy to look forward to My Cousin Vinny made a couple years after this.

Hey Jen!!! More 'Lethal Weapon' and I am so here for it!!!
When the movie trailer was released in theaters, the tagline for the trailer was, "This time...they're not taking any crap!" And as the line was said by the movie trailer narrator, the toilet fell on the station wagon.
As far as the main villain...Joss Ackland (Arjen Rudd) was a theater actor who did quite a few films in character roles. You have seen him before. He was the Soviet Ambassador in 'The Hunt For Red October'.
Patsy Kensit (Rika van den Haas or Haagen-Daaz ) did not make a lot of big movies. All of the others I have seen with her are more arthouse films like 'Angels & Insects' and 'Twenty-One'. One of her biggest claims to fame was being married to Liam Gallagher of the band Oasis (they were tabloid fodder for a few years).
Something I keep meaning to mention...Richard Donner, as a director, did have one actor he kept using in a lot of his films. His name is Steve Kahan, and he is Richard Donner's cousin. He made his film debut in 'Superman' as the cop Armus, who finds his partner Harry's hat on the subway tracks after following Otis to Lex Luthor's lair, and in the 'LW' films he is Captain Ed Murphy, the boss of Riggs and Murtagh. Steve retired around 2006. The Donner films he was in :
    - all four 'Lethal Weapon ' films
    - 'Scrooged' with Bill Murray, a more modern take on 'A Christmas Carol' with Murray as the Scrooge character.
    - 'Radio Flyer'
    - 'Assassins' with Sylvester Stallone, Julianne Moore, and Antonio Banderas. A thriller written by The Wachowskis, before they made 'The Matrix'
    - 'Maverick' with Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Garner. A western comedy based on a TV show in the 1960s...Danny Glover also shows up in a cameo. Funny movie!
    - 'Conspiracy Theory ' with Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, and Patrick Stewart
    - 'Timeline' with Gerard Butler, Paul Walker, Billy Connelly, and Michael Sheen. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, who wrote the novel 'Jurassic Park' among many others. This was the last one they made together in 2003.

The first was more of a Crime-Thriller (since, I'm assuming, it was intended to be a one-off movie), but once they saw the potential for a franchise they went full-on Buddy-Cop Action-Comedy (but still with significant dramatic elements). A brilliant combination elevated by a stellar cast (that just gets better in the next one).

If those krugerrands are the one troy ounce variety, the overall weight of the coin would actually be slightly heavier (it’s alloyed with copper, making it 22 karat gold) but there’d be one troy ounce of actual gold content. Today’s gold spot price is hovering around US$1650/oz. Not sure what the price of gold was back then, probably somewhere around US$300/oz.

My friends and I saw this in the theatre when I was 19 in 1989- I think this was the first film we saw that skipped the intro credits and got right into the action literally after the title screen.
And playing "Knocking on Heaven's Door" was the best fake out ever of the time! We truly believed Riggs might die at the end and it would be the end of the franchise. Back in the day an A-list actor could quit a returning role if they were fed up- and it usually meant killing off the character. We were never so glad to be wrong!
This film had some tough competition that year as Ghostbusters II and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were both released in 89, but the monster blockbuster movie of the year was Batman.

I feel like Mel Gibson's personality and sense of humour (is? used to be?) pretty close to Riggs'. -- I just spent an hour reading through his wiki, and he's all over the map, having been racist/antisemetic/homophobic on several occasions over a few decades, and a huge drinking problem. But also does a ton of philanthropic work. But turns around and salutes Trump. Also he owns an island?! I don't know what to think of him. I hope he gets the help he needs.

The music of the 4 films of the saga was composed by Michael Kamen, the guitar solos are by Eric Clapton, the sax by David Sanborn. There is talk of a fifth film in the plans, this time directed by Mel Gibson himself, since Richard Donner, director of the saga, died last year, and Donner asked Gibson for the favor, while Donner was in the production of the fifth film, that if something happened to him, that Gibson would take over directing the film.

13:55 Actually, diplomatic immunity doesn't protect you from arrest (though police forces may have their own procedures on dealing with diplomats). It does protect against longer-term detention and prosecution, but only if your home government wants it to. If a government did use dip immunity to protect major crimes like this then they would likely face consequences such as their embassies/consulates closed and their diplomats expelled (cf the closure of the Libyan embassy in London in the 80s). OTOH it is sometimes used to get away with more minor stuff, famously including the US embassy in London parking vehicles illegally for decades and just refusing to pay the fines (IIRC running into £millions).

Not sure if you know this, the ending shot is of the Vincent Thomas bridge and the L.A. harbor area. The bridge connects Long Beach to San Pedro. I grew up in San Pedro. They've filmed in that area going all the way back to the 60s. You might remember the area from Gone In 60 Seconds, or The Fast And The Furious, or Terminator 2, or old re-runs of The Love Boat. Every episode opened with areal views of the harbor. In 2012, director Tony Scott took his own life by jumping from the Vincent Thomas bridge.

My favorite of the series by far. Shane Black (who created the characters and wrote the original screenplay) wanted Riggs to die and obviously the movie had a darker tone, such as Riggs dying to save Murtaugh and his family and which I THINK would've been a perfect ending. In the next 2 sequel Riggs changed so much, it doesnt feel like the same person.
