I’m so glad I came across your video! I’ve been dabbling in aquaponics and I feel like the clay balls are going to be a game changer for me. Thanks for the video!
Im currently in the process of making basically a glorified gutter for behind my fishtank so the water from the pump runs through it before going back into the tank Your channel was a big part in me planning to do this in the first place But I also want to include a raised lid, as I need to stop the water from evaporating into the room but also need space for plants to grow
Thank you for this amazing video, I have been on the prowl for a Boston fern since watching your previous video & am making notes about the clay balls & your other beautiful plants as I want to do something similar when I get my new 1500L tank in! Keep up the great videos!
This works well. I clip some net pots behind the mattenfilters in my tanks, drop plants in those. That works well. Another thing you can do if you're on sump filtration or a canister filter is plumb some of the return water into hydroponic trays or "dutch buckets", which are both really good options if your fish are harming the roots of your plants.
The reason why clay pebbles are good is because they provide the perfect surface area for nitrifying bacteria to live which is the whole foundation of aquaponics.
I love this idea so much I built my 600 gallon plywood tank with this in mind as well from your idea . I love fish and plants so it’s a no brainer lol, looks amazing
I've been out of the fish keeping game for about 5 years and I forgot I subscribe to you I'm back in the game now. This is a great video! I wasn't aware that you can grow pothos leaves under water? That's good to know I only have the roots going down under right now. Planted about 3 weeks ago and his booming with growth which is awesome to see.
Could you make a video of you catching one of your naughty fish caught in action. Such as destroying your plants or the fish that was trying to destroy his aquarium! It be fun to bring some fish comedy like that from you!😂
The problem is that they do it when I'm not home. I aquascaped my 210g recently, came home the other day and he destroyed everything. He even took apart my fx6 filter intake. I need a spy came to catch him in the act!
@@dwsdarius Yes! Please do that and the thumbnail could be a picture of the fish with like tears in his eyes! And dang that's crazy that he destroyed your filter 😳!
Nice setup! I use bright shoplights over my tanks and they grow plants well. Did you make an updated video about your aquaponic systems on your tanks? Link? Thanks.
Should i grow out my Monstera in the soil and get it big or can i just go ahead and transfer it to a seasoned aquarium right now? The plant looks to be 3 separate clippings with 3 stalks per section, about a foot high.
My aquarium just broke 😢 will have to use one of those intex pools for a while maybe the 1000+ litre one will put some pond liner inside prefer aquariums much better view but this way is much cheaper for now
Great idea on the egg crate on the brace ! Gunna give it a try on my 75. How would you say it reduces the ph with the clay pebbles ? I'm using some semi Aquatics now but they are not doing to great, didn't know about the light, going to adjust that but has no substrate just sponge media on a basket.
Thanks. I haven't found the clay pebbles to reduce to the pH by any noticeable margin. I think it takes a lot of that stuff to have that affect and I only have about 4Ibs worth. The pebbles aren't a necessity, they just keep everything damp
@@dwsdarius yea makes sense the tank is huge ! I'm not having much success with the plants tho, but moved them to a spot that's underneath uvb/uva light hopefully they can start to grow. I suppose the plants are safe to buy from like home depot ?
I can't seem to find information about the lighting time lenght? because for example vegetables would take anywhere from 12-16hours of strong leds, but an aquarium is more about 8hours of normal decent leds.. what would be the good timing of lighting?
I've been running a 20 gallon tank with just plant filtration for over 3 years now. Fish selection is important though, with the lack of an aquarium filter you won't have any surface agitation, so no oxygen for the tank. Fish like betta and gourami can thrive in this type of tank, if you want other types of fish, you will need aquatic plants to produce oxygen underwater. Overall, you would have to keep less fish than if you use a mechanical filter. But, it can be done
Man, you answered my question before I had to ask I'm gonna try this on my 75 Aqueon_ lid or cover/ what are you doing to prevent fish from jumping out of aquarium?
The only way I could see dirt planters being successful is if you lifted them completely out of the water and inserted a clay water spike that drew water from the tank below as needed.
I wonder how aquaponics would be in a turtle tank? Turtle makes a huge mess which is partly mitigated by having a huge filter on it, but there's still more nitrate and ammonia than I want. I can't put snails in to keep the algae down because he tries (and usually succeeds) to eat them. He seems to absolutely not care about plants or their roots. He's an Asian flapshell turtle, and preferers either live foods, or turtle pellets. I don't like sacrificing live things to him, so he gets lots of turtle pellets, which he really likes. There is no arguing with him about eating those. Between the uneaten pellets, and the pellets which have been converted to poo, I'm wondering if it would be a good environment for plants. He has a full spectrum basking light which is a real champ at growing algae, but he doesn't like to bask, so perhaps using the basking space and the very bright light would be the perfect place to grow plants? I guess the only way to find out is to try, and this video has given me some ideas about how to accomplish that.
If you're keeping shrimp and other invertebrates, be careful with metal mesh for supporting your plants. Copper is the worst, but even overly high iron can be rough on inverts.
Many house plants are considered poisonous/toxic to dogs and cats when they eat the leaves. Dracaena sp. are one of those considered poisonous, but I noticed you have one in your tank. Apparently poisons/toxins don't leach out of the roots into the water. What are your thoughts about using poisonous/toxic plants in aquaponics?
I think the biggest problem with not being abel to grow plants in your aquarium is. TIME. It takes time for your anaquarium to be abel to grow plants. Your tank needs to season its self. I converted all 10 of my aquariums to planted tanks. It took me two years to get all 10 to the point of being self sustaining. A seasoned tank can grow almost anything. All with no co2. Just sand, root tabs an fish waste.
Some plants can't grow in aquaponics, I think euphorbia is one of them. For other toxic plants that can be grown in aquaponics, only the roots are in the water so it should be safe. However why there are hundreds of non toxic plants to choose from
finally an aquaponics aquarium where the fish are happy and thriving
Yes those crammed tilapia tanks are sad

Yes I get a lot of evaporation, so I run a dehumidifier

Thank you, the boston fern is a perfect 'water edge' plant
Your plants are doing amazing. I cut holes in my lid and push pothos through, but now I'll certainly try other varieties. 🙂
Thank you...be careful, plants are almost as addictive as fish!
If you get good strong full spectrum led grow lights they can definitely make up for it. But they do use more energy and create more heat.

Nice! The photo's grows much slower underwater and needs to be in direct flow so that algae doesn't build on top of it

Is the plant basket dipping directly into the aquarium?
Yes you want the leca balls in at least an inch of water to keep moisture on the plant roots
what a lovely plant selection
This is definitely your best video. Lovely setup and thanks for sharing. Appreciate it

That was pretty dope.
Not a plant guy but this video was really interesting 👍👍👍👍👍
You should get into plants, there's a species that can eat a guppy whole.
Nice set ..just be aware that I think pothos leaves can rot overtime when submerged in the water

You can by it from a garden store, I bought mine from lowes hardware. I'm sure amazon might carry it as well

Those are 2x4's pressure treated and coated with pond shield

what brand of leca do you use
The only way I could see dirt planters being successful is if you lifted them completely out of the water and inserted a clay water spike that drew water from the tank below as needed.
Do you root your plant in a jar before you put it in or can it root just in the aquarium
The plants root directly in the aquarium

That sounds like it would turn out great, as long as the turtle doesn't develop an appetite for what your growing. The definitely produce enough waste
If you're keeping shrimp and other invertebrates, be careful with metal mesh for supporting your plants. Copper is the worst, but even overly high iron can be rough on inverts.
Thanks, I never considered that
You could grow veggies. It’s great!
Will all these plants eventually outcompete algae?
Yes they will
well with the lighting that would explain why my pothos died.
The stronger the better

Apparently poisons/toxins don't leach out of the roots into the water. What are your thoughts about using poisonous/toxic plants in aquaponics?
It's fine. If your animal likes to eat plants then only use plants that aren't poisonous to them. No drama.
You reckon - this setup is better than having aquatic plants inside the aquarium?
Yes, terrestrial plants grow faster, thus consuming nitrates at a faster rate than submersed aquatic plants

The BIG QUESTION is how to suspend and properly plant the plants...and WHICH plants, of course!
I don’t think dirt would confuse the plants because ponds
