    The GOP recognizes that long term the GOP isn’t going to have a chance of being elected to high offices in a representative democracy. The desperation to maintain/grow the personal and institutional power for GOP members means that in their estimation democratic government must be dismantled/abandoned.

    I'm an old school Republican, and I think Repubbers saw the writing on the wall, that the GOP is sliding inexorably toward irrelevance. The demographics of this country will completely offset such gambits as gerrymandering and the electoral college, and the Democrat party will soon hold a majority of all elected offices in this country. Dems have only lost the popular vote for president once in the last 30yrs. Without a coup, the Republican party will be unable to win a majority in Congress or the President in 10-20yrs. Someone told Trump this (Trumps too stupid to even think about such things), and he convinced the entire party there has to be an illegal takeover of the US Government in a coup of some sort, because marginalizing voters will not be enough.

    One of the really interesting things she talks about are the 2 main identifiers a country is in trouble and possible facing a civil war. Surprisingly neither of those 2 indicators are authoritarianism or economics or populism.
    The 2 main indicators are.
    1) Democracy failing into a condition called anocracy. Its not they become authoritarian it this weird state in between where its still democracy but also ineffective. She explains it better than I can.

The southern strategy alone did not give birth to MAGA, the Republicans were content with their power over the majority. IMO, it is the evangelical ideology with its apocalyptic millenarianism, its messianism which was an important factor in the authoritarian radicalization of the GOP. I can illustrate this by observing the synthesis of the ideologies of evangelical fundamentalism and libertarianism that are the main driver of MAGA.

      Both have benefits, both have negatives. So what we have done down here in Australia is both. For the lower houses where governments are formed and questioned over their action we use the Westminster system of seats, each seat in the Parliament represents an electorate of roughly the same amount of people. In the upper houses we use proportional representation. The issue we keep having over the proportional representation in the upper houses is minority parties or even just one single individual (an independent) can end up with a massive amount of power through having the balance of power, or the one vote the government needs to pass legislation, leading to governments being held hostage to that minority.
      The lower houses using the Westminster system which can end up with a party or a coalition of parties with the most seats, but with less votes then the opposition that has less seats. Though that usually doesn't happen, it's caused by parties targeting only or mostly marginal seats. Which brings us to another issue, the bigger issue too. A large disproportion of government funding and resources are thrown at marginal seats, known as 'pork-barrelling'.
      Overall the system works pretty well, much better than the USA system, but if Australia was to use proportional representation in the lower houses it would cause so many more issues, minority parties and independents having the balance of power. It's a bit hard for the USA to move to a fully Westminster system due to your history, but going as far down that road as possible would be the best approach.

    I found the first two points very interesting. Regarding "the tyranny of the minority" isnt a FPTP electoral system already a TotM? There is no way around that one. FPTP leads to corruption of gerrymandering and voter suppression, something a PR system will hardly ever witness due to fact that every vote counts and no party wants to lose when where ever possible. So, the moment a FPTP electoral system establishes gerrymandering you always have a TotM. DAVID! Why did you not ask him such important things? ARRRGGGHHHH!

    • @UTubeISphere
      @UTubeISphere Год назад

      Pure 'first past the post' electoral frequently lead to two-party systems (or two big and one smaller third party), and it often means that a majority (or a qualified majority) rather than the minority is in charge.
      However, usually there will be rules and norms in place that also protect the rights of minorities.
      (PS The interview addressed another particularity of the US, namely primaries, which currently appears to lead a hard core maga-gop minority to hijack the system.)
      The extent of gerrymandering appears to be a particular speciality of the US way of doing things. It could be prevented by having an independent electoral commission (like in Australia?).
      Voter suppression: does not appear to be an issue in other FPTP electoral systems that are quite similar to the US: e.g. in the UK voting is made easy, and in Australia it is mandatory, so again voter suppression is a US particularity (that arguably goes back to times when those in power did not want to share it with those they did not like).
      Also unique to the US is the amount of money in elections, on steroids since Citizens United, the extent of moneyed interests and influence on the Supreme Court, an ever increasing concentration of the media in the hands of a few media conglomerates and platforms - in that sense, it's actually an oligarchy, a super-small group of super-wealthy who form a tyranny of a super-minority through dark money, shadow networks, think tanks, influence on media and media platforms, etc.

    • @HannibalBarca247BCE
      @HannibalBarca247BCE Год назад +1

      Down here in Australia we use an independent regulator that is answerable and overseen by a joint committee in the upper house of Parliament, similar to your Senate. The electoral divisions that are represented by seats in the lower house are redrawn, when needed, by this independent regulator, in an open and transparent way using census data on population movements. So far this approach has taken the politics out of the process and there is no sign that it won't continue to work well. The basic idea is that politicians or political parties shouldn't be directly involved in the process of drawing up the boundaries of the electorates they represent. They should jointly oversee that process, as anyone can, even outside of Australia as it's all published on their website.
      The USA needs to head down that road, moving the process away from political parties to an independent regulator that is transparent and regarded as the 'independent umpire' like in a sports match.

    There are laws and rules written into the fabric of this reality - and consequently universal observable consequence that match, and they are *rightfully* visible for all to understand via observational science.
    Humans are fragile and delicate designs, much talk about "we're all just animals"... But, we couldn't be as tough as an animal if we tried - they can walk & move once hatched/born, and they need no fire to cook their foods. We are not designated to even handle stress well, a pregnancy is a great example of that - because even in the womb stress is toxic to our development.
    Everything we know is centered around cruelty and destress - both are enemies of the body, and this is a universal law/code around the world, the science & observation are sound. So regardless of religion or flag either side experiencing stress and cruelty are innocent - because all life from the womb is precious.
    Until we ALL start to see that, there will be no proper future for any child.
