Hawaii wildfires deadliest in the US in over 100 years

  • The Governor of Hawaii has warned the number of people who have died in the wildfires will rise, making this the deadliest fire in the US for more than a hundred years.
Sniffer dogs are deployed to locate bodies in the wreckage but so far have only covered three percent of the search area - and tension is mounting among local residents who are demanding to know why enough wasn't done to sound the alarm so more people could get out in time.

You have too much faith in technology, little respect for nature, and seek blame for the deaths. If you saw the commotion outside your house, would you wait for authorities to tell you to move? Or would you act on your own accord? If the winds were blowing fireballs at your neighborhood at 80mph, would you wait for a siren? We know how it went down here, and everyone outside of hawaii is just trying to blame someone.

This was just sent from an Oahu friend...
    Just reported from a whistleblower:
What you're not hearing from our local government -
I just got out of a meeting where I was informed by someone in the Mayors office about developments that are being kept from the public. I am not a conspiracy theorist and I don’t want to make trouble but here’s what I’ve heard.
The amount of fatalities is expected to be more than 500 but less than 1000.
Many of the fatalities will be children who were at home because they canceled school. Parents worked and were not there to evacuate the children. Kids had no idea they needed to leave and by the time they noticed their homes or apartments were on fire, it was too late.
The government is worried about how we will react when we learn that the fire department left the fire earlier in the day and claimed it was 100% contained knowing that the winds were expected to be 70mph by the afternoon. This is against all fire control protocols. The fire department should not have left the original fire unattended. They are scared that the public calls for accountability will be more than they can control and protests and riots will occur.
They plan to lock down Lahaina for several months. It will take months to clean up the hazardous and environmental contamination. They won’t have enough housing for
    All the displaced.
There were 2,000 unaccounted for this morning. They have a list where they are trying to keep track. They found 700 today. But there are still 1300 missing.
They are very worried that the community is going to freak out when they find out how not a single fire truck responded to the fires. The emergency sirens were not activated (hurricane sirens) and loss of life could have been kept down by better emergency management which utterly failed.
I’m not trying to make waves or stir up problems but I was so angry and sad when I found out how many children are dead that I knew I had to post this and let everyone know what I have learned.
It’s time for our officials to stand up, tell the truth, and face the music. They failed Lāhainā guys. Our government is full of incompetent nepotism. The fire chief is the son of the former fire chief. We need to hold officials accountable for the mistakes they made.
Please don’t hate the messenger. I’m just relaying what I learned today.
God bless Maui and Lahaina! Pray for all the victims.

"climate change" may have nothing to do with this at all. Natural water sources on the island were diverted away from this area by large corporations - areas that had been farming sugar cane, pineapple etc were left to go fallow as she said. Power lines may have been felled by high winds and sparked the fire. And then there are natural earth forces that have nothing to do with human behavior that cause periodical changes such as El Nino and La Nina. Volcanic activity also cause changes. A lot of these people who are responsible for management of the island are pivoting to 'climate change" to take the "heat" off themselves.

The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the American city of Chicago during October 8-10, 1871. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles (9 km2) of the city including over 17,000 structures, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. The fire began in a neighborhood southwest of the city center. A long period of hot, dry, windy conditions, and the wooden construction prevalent in the city, led to the conflagration.@@HowLifeWorks Gee wonder what caused those high winds and heat when there were no cars or airplanes or electricity.

Living in a town that once was similarly destroyed by wildfire, in a country which lives with the annual threat of wildfire fires, Australia. One can only sympathise with the people affected by this disaster. It is a chain of progressive circumstances that leads to the moment that triggers the disaster. Fire needs fuel, oxygen and ignition temperature, the first two were in abundant supply on this volcanic island at the point of ignition. The fuel for civil infrastructure conflagration was provided by humans. Once fire takes hold in these wild fire conditions in a populated area it is high intensity infra red radiation that penertrates buildings through the windows causeing buildings to ignite inside in an explosive fashion. Modern living fills buildings with high energy fuel materials, it is population density that determines the scale of human impact.

This is man made tragedy, but media is saying otherwise. Have been to Maui , it is a beautiful place, But felt like pseudo / made up culture. The sales teams at my company always had their gatherings over there, so was curious to visit. And other reason was to see tropical trees and tropical nature. Everything was so expensive ,but sadly I didn't find the nature I was looking for in main city. Most trees were palm and , flowering trees planted to look city more attractive. Also didn't see any grazing animals like cows , goats which keep grass growth in control The old sugar cane fields were all dried up .Most of the visitors were rich and many driving expensive cars. Walmart was over crowded with shortage of supplies. Felt like local nature was being hijacked for tourism. Why do people expect same kind of lifestyle like mainland on tiny island in middle of ocean?
What happened is very tragic. But don't blame nature. The island couldn't handle that stress anymore where majority mass of the island is made from things coming from some where else.

There were multiple fires that day, on Maui. The fires disabled the cell phones that the first responders use. The large hurricane south of the Islands along with the high pressure north exasperated the winds in Hawaii to gust of 80 miles per hour. The defoliation of native forest for Sandalwood harvest. And, the unfortunate history of water being permanently removed from the west side of the island for sugarcane propagation. These five things were some of the causes of the Lahaina disaster. In my personal opinion, another item added would be the nonrequired use of fire suppression sprinklers, invented in 1812. Only the elevation of greed over the respect of life, in my mind, is why fire suppression sprinklers aren't in every first-world building built ever since 1812. Yes, with that much wind, it wouldn't have prevented the Lahaina fires. But, it might have slowed them down enough to save lives. Again, that's my personal opinion. Our hearts and prayers go to the people of Maui. And, any people on the planet who might be suffering in any way. Aloha nui loa, malama pono.

This would not be surprising. The native Hawaiians traditionally lived in grass and palm huts near the coast. These structures didn’t last long so they were frequently abandoned and a new one was built. In the 60s a law was passed that said when these structures were rebuilt, they had to be built to modern building codes. Of course, the natives could not comply so their land was then confiscated and sold to developers. After a while in response, a native went to a land board meeting and blew himself up, killing and injuring many people but this was a futile act and the practice was continued until all of the native property was taken and given ( or sold) to developers.

It was a very dangerous environment even without hurricane force winds and very dry conditions. Sometimes all the wrong things line up and this happens. Not anybody to blame specifically, but it does happen. Do we learn from this or point fingers? I say learn and maybe help understand how to prevent the possibility in similar situations.

The issue here is management of said areas I live in Hawaii my boss is from Lāhainā and as a result he and his family lost his family home. The issue here isn't as easy as just saying climate change those hurricane like winds were from a tropical storm the main thing I haven't heard people talk about is how the fire started yes the wind allowed it to spread at a dangerous rate to where it took out a historic town but the cause is part of the issue it. Like the professor said management of the environment is key to preventing the severity of it. California is victim to this because they have so many regulations and different government entities to where you can see proportionally the worse the forest and grasslands are maintained the more severe the fires have been because there's more dead wood and vegetation to fuel these fires. Similarly like she said fires aren't necessarily bad it's when they become uncontrolled is when it's negative and dangerous. Another thing I've noticed is a lot of my friends and people I know are trying to donate but for some strange reason once again the government is getting involved and preventing people donating to anything but government entities which of anything is peculiar. I'm not saying climate change doesn't affect things like this but what I am saying is simply trying to bring up the topic of climate change on a tradegy like this doesn't help anyone especially if the cause of these fires hasn't even been exposed yet.

Wow, you’re not going to get any sympathy from that woman in Oregon 😏 She laughs and says that this isn’t new. Well, it’s devastating and highest number of fatalities! And she kept saying it will keep on happening without “mitigating” but doesn’t explain how that’s done! Ugh she’s so frustrating to listen to!! Cold heart…

    • @tparbs
      @tparbs Год назад

She's not cold. She's simply speaking truth. She's an expert in wildfires in urban environments. She is 100% correct-- and the news guy is tone deaf. Mismanagement of our forests and wild places combined with urban sprawl and putting out every wildfire is what is causing these deadly fires. The news and politicians want to jump on the climate change bandwagon. That's not the cause. Prevention is the key and that means managing the forest floor so you don't give fuel to these fires. Highly flammable invasive Guinea grasses contributed greatly to this horrific fire.
